Chapter 1 of My Husband’s Mistress Cost Me Our Baby

The phone buzzed on the nightstand at seven minutes past eight.

I was supposed to be reading. The doctor had said no stress, no screens, no sudden movements. Strict bed rest. The baby was twenty-six weeks, and every day past viability felt like a small, held breath.

Damon had left the phone face-up. He never did that. He must have been in a rush. I remembered him kissing my forehead an hour ago, smelling like cedar and starch. "Business dinner," he'd said. "Tribeca. Don't wait up."

The screen lit again. A photo this time. I saw it before I told myself not to look.

A hotel mirror. A woman in a white silk robe. Damon's hand on her hip.

My stomach made a sound. I thought it was the baby moving. I reached for the phone the way you reach for a knife.

The thread was long. Months long. Pet names I had never been called. Receipts. A photo of a necklace I had thought he bought for his mother. *Alivia*, the contact read. His assistant. The sweet, soft-voiced girl who brought him coffee and called me Mrs. Alvarez at the Christmas party with her lashes lowered like she was praying.

I scrolled. I could not stop scrolling.

Then the pain came.

It arrived low and wrong, a fist closing around the base of my spine. I felt the warmth spread under me before I saw it. The sheet went dark. The phone slid out of my hand and hit the floor screen-down.

"Okay," I whispered to the ceiling. "Okay. Okay."

I dialed nine-one-one with my left hand because my right was already shaking too hard. I gave the address. I unlocked the front door. I sat on the marble of the foyer because the rug was too soft to push up from. I did not call Damon. The thought arrived and I let it pass through me, clean, like a train through an empty station.

The ambulance lights painted the ceiling red, then white, then red.

They strapped me down. A young paramedic with freckles kept saying my name. *Eve. Eve, stay with me, Eve.* I watched the IV bag swing. I watched the city lights smear across the back doors. Somewhere in Tribeca, a candle was burning down to its wick. Somewhere a woman in a silk robe was laughing at something my husband said.

The baby left me on the West Side Highway.

I did not cry. I want to be honest about that. I made a sound, once, when the doctor in the trauma bay told me. It was not a sob. It was the noise a house makes when something load-bearing gives way deep inside the walls.

They moved me to recovery near midnight. The room was the color of nothing. A clock ticked above the door. The radiator hissed. Somewhere down the hall a phone kept ringing and no one answered it.

I lay there and stared at the ceiling tile directly above me. There was a water stain shaped like a small continent. I memorized its coastline. I felt the thing inside me that had been crying for two years go quiet. Not gone. Just quiet. Folded down small and tucked away like a letter you intend to use later.

When I closed my eyes I did not see my baby. I saw a blueprint.

Damon arrived at one-forty-seven in the morning.

I heard him before I saw him — the cologne first, then the heavy, expensive footsteps. He came in carrying white lilies wrapped in brown paper. Funeral flowers. He didn't know that. He never knew things like that.

"Eve. Baby. Eve, I came as soon as —"

"Where were you?"

My voice did not sound like mine. It sounded calm. Curious, almost.

His eyes did the small, fast calculation I had watched him do a hundred times in boardrooms. "The Hirsch deal ran long. I had my phone on silent. I'm so sorry, sweetheart. I'm here. I'm here now."

He sat on the edge of the bed. The mattress dipped. He reached for my hand and I let him take it. His thumb moved over my knuckles like he was polishing silver.

"The doctor said —" His voice cracked. He had always been good at the crack. "Eve, I'm so sorry. I'll be better. I swear to God I'll be better."

I looked at him. I looked at him the way you look at a building you have decided to demolish — measuring the load points, noting where the supports run, deciding which wall comes down first.

"It's okay," I said.

His shoulders dropped half an inch. Relief. He had expected screaming. He had braced for it and I had handed him a feather instead.

"I forgive you."

The lilies trembled in his hand. He set them on the rolling tray. He kissed my forehead the way he had kissed it earlier that night, before any of this. I let him. I closed my eyes and counted the seconds until he pulled away. Eight. He used to linger longer.

He left at three to "handle some things." I watched the door swing shut behind him.

The next afternoon, discharged in a wheelchair I did not need, I asked the orderly to wait. There was a payphone near the pharmacy entrance. I had not used one since I was a child. I had three quarters in the pocket of my coat and a business card I had borrowed from a colleague's desk weeks ago, when none of this was a plan yet — just a shape forming at the edge of my mind.

I dialed. A woman answered on the second ring.

"Cole and Associates."

"I'd like to schedule a consultation with Nathan Cole, please. In person. Under the name Margaret Liu."

I paid the subway fare in cash. I did not look at my reflection in the train window. I already knew what I would see.

The mask. On straight.
