Chapter 1 of My Husband Faked His Devotion to Destroy Me, So I Erased Him from My Life

He bought me a beachfront villa for our unborn child. He kissed my forehead every morning, whispering how much he loved our growing family. But at our five-year anniversary party, the screen didn't show our memories. It played a manipulated video of me with another man. My husband didn't look shocked. He calmly took the microphone, staring at my pregnant belly with pure disgust. "How long were you sleeping with him?" he asked the silent room. I looked at the man who had spent two months building a perfect nursery, realizing every kiss was a calculated lie. He wanted to raise me to the highest pedestal just to push me off. He held out his hand, demanding my wedding ring. I didn't cry or beg for a chance to explain. I simply slipped the diamond off my finger, placed it in his palm, and walked out the door.

The plastic stick felt heavy in Sophie’s trembling hand, despite weighing less than an ounce.

Two distinct pink lines. Clear, bold, and undeniable.

After two agonizing years of sterile clinic waiting rooms, basal thermometers, timed cycles, and the monthly heartbreak of blood on white cotton, it was finally here.

Sophie pushed open the heavy glass door to Adrian’s top-floor corner office.

Her husband sat behind the expansive mahogany desk, his dark hair neatly combed, his tailored charcoal suit jacket unbuttoned. He was reviewing a stack of quarterly reports, the cool afternoon light outlining the sharp, aristocratic cut of his jaw.

“Adrian,” she whispered, her voice cracking before she could steady it.

He looked up from his tablet, his dark brow arching in mild surprise. “Sophie? What are you doing here? I thought you were meeting Clara for lunch.”

Sophie couldn't find the words. The dam broke, and tears flooded her eyes as she crossed the plush carpet in hurried steps. She reached his desk and pulled the small stick from her coat pocket, setting it gently down onto the leather blotter.

Adrian’s gaze dropped to the stick. For two seconds, he didn't move.

“We’re having a baby,” Sophie sobbed, rounding the desk and throwing her arms around his neck. “It worked, Adrian. We’re finally having a baby.”

The breath left him in a quiet rush. Then, his arms came around her waist, pulling her firmly against his chest. He stood, lifting her slightly off her feet, burying his face into the crook of her neck.

His hand came up, long fingers sliding through her hair, gently stroking the strands down her back with practiced ease.

“A baby,” he murmured against her skin. “After everything.”

“Two years,” she cried into his shoulder, clinging to him like a lifeline. “I thought my body was broken. I thought we’d never get this.”

“Shh. Don't say that,” he whispered soothingly. “It’s over now. We did it.”

Sophie pulled back slightly, wanting to see the relief in his eyes, wanting to share the pure, unadulterated triumph of this moment.

She tilted her head up.

The breath caught in her throat.

For one split second, before his expression shifted, Adrian wasn't looking at her like a proud husband. His eyes were flat, dark, and utterly devoid of warmth. There was a razor-sharp, calculating appraisal in his stare—a cold scrutiny so severe it made her stomach plunge.

It was gone in an instant.

He blinked, and the familiar, gentle curve of his lips returned. “Are you alright? You look pale.”

Sophie swallowed hard, her heart suddenly beating erratically against her ribs. “I… I’m fine. Just overwhelmed.”

Her mind spun back five years. She remembered when his first major venture had collapsed, when the angel investors pulled out overnight and threatened to bankrupt him. They had spent three days barricaded in this very office, surviving on cold takeout, sleeping side by side on a thin blanket over the hardwood floor. Back then, when he held her, there was an absolute, raw transparency between them.

Now, staring into his dark brown eyes, she felt an unsettling chill. That unshakable trust felt fragile, marked by a hairline crack she couldn't name.

“I have to take care of you,” Adrian said, his voice bright, brimming with an enthusiasm that felt almost rehearsed. He cupped her cheek, his thumb sweeping away a stray tear. “No more stress. No more running around.”

“Adrian, I’m only four weeks—”

“I don’t care if it’s four days,” he cut in smoothly, stepping around his desk and picking up the desk phone. “Cynthia? Clear my calendar for next month. Cancel the London summit and the Tokyo acquisition trip. Push everything to the board.”

Sophie stared at him. “You’ve been preparing for the Tokyo deal for eight months. You can’t just cancel.”

“Watch me,” Adrian replied, hanging up the phone with a decisive click. He turned back to her, a radiant smile on his lips. “Our fifth anniversary is this weekend. We’re going to combine it. A grand celebration and a baby shower all in one. The entire city will celebrate this with us.”

“A baby shower? Adrian, it’s too early to announce it to everyone. What if—”

“Nothing is going to happen,” he said firmly, taking both of her hands into his. His grip was strong, almost unyielding. “I will make sure of it. You deserve this, Sophie. We both do.”

She tried to smile, forcing down the uneasy flutter in her chest. He was being attentive. He was giving up crucial business for her. She was just hormonal and paranoid.

The quiet hum of medical machinery filled Room 412.

Later that evening, Sophie sat on the stiff vinyl chair beside the hospital bed, the scent of antiseptic burning her nostrils.

On the bed lay Lily, her younger sister. Pale, motionless, her face framed by plastic tubes and white bandages. It had been three weeks since the crash, and the doctors still had no timeline for when—or if—she would wake from the coma.

Sophie reached out, her fingers closing gently over Lily’s limp, cool hand.

A suffocating wave of guilt tightened around Sophie’s throat.

Every monitor beep sounded like an accusation.

It was her fault.

If she hadn't intervened, Lily wouldn't be here. Sophie had discovered that Lily was seeing a married man—a wealthy, older client whose name Lily refused to utter. In a panic to protect her little sister from ruining her life, Sophie had tracked the man down, confronting him in secret and threatening to expose him to his family and the press if he didn't leave Lily alone.

The confrontation had backfired violently. That rainy night, outside the boutique hotel downtown, Lily had arrived to find her lover walking away. A terrible, screaming struggle had erupted on the slick sidewalk between the sisters. Lily had broken away, blinded by tears and rage, darting straight into the busy avenue.

The screech of tires still echoed in Sophie’s nightmares.

“I’m pregnant, Lily,” Sophie whispered to the quiet room, her voice breaking. “You’re going to be an aunt. Please… you have to wake up and meet the baby. You have to let me fix this.”

Lily’s eyelids remained closed, her chest rising and falling only with the mechanical rhythm of the ventilator.

Sophie bowed her head, resting her forehead against the edge of the mattress, drowning in the silence.

“Visiting hours ended twenty minutes ago.”

The low, even voice made Sophie flinch.

She turned toward the door. Adrian stood in the threshold, half-shadowed by the dim corridor light. His hands were buried in his trouser pockets, his posture immaculate.

He was watching her back. He had been standing there, silent, observing her grief with an unreadable expression.

“Adrian,” she said, wiping her eyes quickly as she stood up. “I lost track of time. I just wanted to see her before we went home.”

Adrian didn't step fully into the room. His eyes shifted from Sophie’s red-rimmed face to Lily’s comatose form, lingering on the girl’s pale features for a fleeting second before returning to his wife.

A faint, chilling smile touched the corner of his lips.

“Enjoy your happiness, Sophie,” he said softly.

The words were spoken with a quiet cadence that made the hairs on Sophie’s arms stand up. It sounded less like a blessing and more like a warning.

Before she could process it, Adrian stepped forward. He took off his heavy wool overcoat and draped it over her shoulders with exquisite, protective care.

“You shouldn't be sitting in the cold,” he murmured, pulling the lapels snug around her neck. “It isn't good for our child.”

The gesture was entirely loving, the picture of a devoted husband shielding his pregnant wife.

Yet as his fingers brushed the bare skin of her collarbone, his touch was so shockingly, unnaturally icy that a violent shudder tore through her body.
