My Husband’s Mistress Cost Me Our Baby

Nathan Cole's office was on the thirty-second floor of a building I had walked past a hundred times without noticing. The elevator had wood paneling and no music. I counted the floors on the way up. I did not let myself think.

The receptionist took my coat. She called me Ms. Liu without hesitation. She had been briefed.

Nathan Cole was older than I expected. Silver hair. Reading glasses on a chain. He stood when I entered and gestured to a leather chair that faced away from the window. I understood the choice immediately. No distractions. No skyline to stare at while your life was being dismantled and rebuilt.

"Mrs. Alvarez," he said quietly. "Thank you for coming."

I sat. I folded my hands in my lap. "Eve is fine."

He opened a yellow legal pad. His pen was heavy and old-fashioned. He did not use a laptop. I liked that. Paper left a different kind of trail.

"Tell me what you want," he said.

I had rehearsed this on the subway. I had practiced the words in the shower, in the kitchen while Damon was at work, in the hospital bed while the radiator hissed. But when I opened my mouth, what came out was simpler than anything I had planned.

"I want everything."

He did not blink. He wrote something down. The pen made a small scratch against the paper.

"Assets?"

"The penthouse. His shares in Alvarez Group. The offshore accounts. All of it."

"Grounds?"

"Infidelity. Ongoing. Documented."

He looked up. "Do you have documentation?"

I reached into my coat pocket. I had printed the text thread at a FedEx two neighborhoods away from our building. I had paid cash. I slid the pages across the desk without looking at them. I had already memorized every word.

Nathan read in silence. His face did not change. When he finished, he set the pages down and folded his hands on top of them.

"This is sufficient," he said. "But we'll need more. A postnuptial agreement. Something he signs willingly."

"He won't sign something that strips him of everything."

"He will if he doesn't know that's what he's signing."

I felt something small and cold settle in my chest. Not fear. Clarity.

"How?"

Nathan leaned back. "We frame it as a recommitment. A fresh start. You tell him it makes you feel safe. We bury the infidelity clause in the middle of the document, technical language, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. If he's arrogant enough — and men like your husband usually are — he won't read it closely. He'll sign it to prove he's changed."

I thought about Damon's face across the breakfast table that morning. The way he had smiled at me like he had won something.

"He'll sign it," I said.

Nathan nodded. "One more thing. Do you have any prior written acknowledgments from him? Anything where he admits to the affair, promises to change, that kind of thing?"

I reached into my other pocket.

The letter was still folded along its original crease. I had kept it in my nightstand for six months, tucked beneath a stack of unread novels. Damon had written it after the first affair, the one I had forgiven because I still believed forgiveness was something that mattered.

I unfolded it on Nathan's desk. The handwriting was unmistakable. Damon's architect-perfect print, each letter the same height.

*Eve — I know I don't deserve you. I know I've broken something that can't be fixed with words. But I'm asking you to let me try. If I ever do this again, I'll give up everything. You are the only thing that matters. I swear it. — D*

Nathan read it twice. Then he looked at me with something that might have been respect.

"This," he said, "is a contract."

I left his office with a folder under my arm and a court date three weeks out. I took the subway home. I stopped at the corner market and bought fresh flowers. Peonies. Damon's favorite.

When I got home, he was already there. Jacket off. Tie loosened. He smiled when he saw the flowers.

"For me?"

"For us," I said.

I kissed him. I felt nothing.

Over the next two weeks, Damon tried so hard it was almost convincing. Flowers arrived every morning. White roses. Orchids. Once, a bouquet so large the delivery man had to bring it up in two trips. Dinner reservations at places we used to go when we were young and still kind to each other. Whispered apologies in the dark.

I thanked him. I smiled. I let him hold my hand across the table. I was perfect.

I opened a bank account in Melbourne under my maiden name. I transferred two thousand dollars the first week. Three thousand the second. Small enough to slip past notice. Large enough to matter.

On a Thursday night, I made dinner. Pasta. His mother's recipe. I set the table with candles. I poured wine. I waited until he had finished his second glass.

Then I slid the folder across the table.

"What's this?" he asked.

I kept my voice soft. Hopeful. "A postnuptial agreement. I know it sounds formal, but I thought — after everything — it might help me feel safe again. Like we're really starting over."

He opened the folder. He scanned the first page. I watched his eyes move left to right, fast, the way he read emails.

"Eve, you don't need this. I told you I'm done with all that."

"I know. But it would mean a lot to me. Please."

I reached across the table. I put my hand over his. I looked at him the way I used to look at him, back when I still thought love was enough.

He exhaled. He picked up the pen I had left beside the folder.

"Where do I sign?"

I turned to the last page. I pointed.

He signed without reading the rest. His signature was confident. Unhesitating. The same signature he used on contracts worth millions.

I took the folder back. I kissed him on the cheek.

"Thank you," I said.

That night, I lay beside him in the dark and listened to him breathe. He fell asleep in minutes. He always did.

I stared at the ceiling and thought about the water stain in the hospital room. The small continent. The blueprint.

I had just redrawn the property lines.

And he had no idea.
