Chapter 1 of My First Love, My Worst Mistake

CLARA

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing. It smooths over the sharp edges of the past, covering ugly memories with warm, until you forget why you ran away in the first place.

I should have remembered that before I stepped into the grand ballroom of the Grand Regency Hotel.

The air inside smelled of expensive perfume, spilled champagne, and the heavy weight of ten years of people trying to impress each other. My ten year high school reunion was in full swing. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead, throwing a bright light across the polished marble floors. All around me, former classmates were laughing too loudly, desperate to prove that the last decade had been good to them and that their careers were booming, their marriages were thriving, and their youth hadn’t slipped through their fingers.

I took a slow sip of my wine, resting my hand against a cocktail table. I wasn't here to brag.

My life wasn't some glittering show, but it was solid. Stable. I worked as a senior financial analyst at a respected firm, owned a cozy two bedroom apartment, and enjoyed the quiet peace of knowing exactly who I was. I had no huge debts, no toxic lovers, and no ghosts from my past.

Or so I thought.

"Clara? Clara Bennett?"

The voice hit me like a splash of ice water. It was low, rich, and smooth, instantly pulling at something deep inside my chest. A voice I hadn't heard in eight years. A voice I thought I had buried.

I turned around slowly, my heart betraying me with a sudden, sharp thud against my ribs.

Standing less than three feet away from me was Julian Vance.

For a second, my brain refused to process the sight of him. The eighteen year old boy who used to wear faded denim jackets and smelled like cheap, rain soaked leather was gone.

In his place stood a man who looked like he had stepped straight off the cover of a luxury lifestyle magazine. He was wearing a charcoal gray suit that fit perfectly across his broad shoulders. His dark hair was perfectly styled, showing just enough signs of age, and his sharp jaw was covered with a light, neatly trimmed beard. On his wrist, a Gold watch caught the chandelier light..a subtle, very expensive show of wealth.

"Julian?" My voice was quieter than I intended.

A slow, devastating smile spread across his face. That same warm, familiar smile that used to make my knees weak in high school chemistry class.

"It really is you," he murmured, his brown eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that felt almost physical. He stepped closer, entering my personal space before I could even take a breath. Without asking, he pulled me into a gentle, lingering hug.

He smelled of Cologne, cedar, and raw money.

"Look at you," Julian said, pulling back just enough to hold me at arm's length, his hands resting lightly on my shoulders. His eyes moved over my face, softening with an expression that looked almost like pure wonder. "You haven't changed at all, Clara. God, you're even more beautiful than I remembered."

"You've... changed a lot," I said, managing a faint smile as I stepped back, quietly removing his hands from my shoulders. My pulse was hammering, but a cold, quiet voice in the back of my mind whispered a warning.

Careful.

"Last I heard, you moved out of state right after graduation. You vanished into thin air, Julian."

A flicker of something dark crossed his eyes so fast that if I hadn't been staring directly at him, I would have missed it. It was gone in an instant, replaced by a look of gentle regret.

"I had to build something for myself, Clara," he said softly, leaning in slightly as if sharing a secret. "I didn't want to stay the broke kid who had nothing to offer. I spent years working in venture capital, building my firm from the ground up. It was brutal. But every single night, when I closed my eyes, I thought about the regret I left behind in this town."

He looked straight into my eyes, his voice dropping into a soft whisper. "I thought about you, Clara. Leaving you was the biggest mistake of my life."

A flutter stirred in my stomach, the dangerous warmth left behind by a first love. It felt like a scene straight out of a romantic movie. The handsome, successful billionaire returning to claim the girl he left behind.

Buzz.

In the up pocket of Julian's tailored suit, his phone began to vibrate. It wasn't a normal ringtone; it was a harsh, steady buzzing.

Julian didn't take the phone out. But his hand twitched, a sharp, sudden movement against his side. His thumb dug into the seam of his trousers, his knuckles turning white.

"Are you going to answer that?" I asked, glancing at his jacket.

"It's nothing." Julian quickly smoothed his jacket down, his face returning to that perfect, charming smile. "Just work. My operations manager doesn't understand time zones."

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.

The phone vibrated again. Then again. Someone was calling him over and over, with a frantic, desperate urgency.

"You should probably take it," I said gently, my sharp analyst eyes catching the faint sweat suddenly appearing along his hairline. For a man pretending to be calm and successful, his body was showing a strange amount of stress.

"I said, it's fine," Julian's voice snapped a hard edge cutting through his warm smile.

The air between us instantly went cold.

Julian realized his mistake immediately. He let out a soft, embarrassed laugh, rubbing the back of his neck like a guilty schoolboy.

"I'm sorry, Clara. Truly. Work has been intense lately. Big deals coming up. But tonight isn't about business. Tonight is about us. Please, let me make up for lost time. Let me take you out for dinner tomorrow night. Somewhere quiet. Just the two of us?"

I hesitated. Every logical part of me...the same logic that allowed me to spot accounting errors in multi million dollar balance sheets told me something didn't add up. His strong eagerness.

The way his eyes kept moving toward the glass entrance of the ballroom every time the doors opened. The way his phone was practically vibrating over and over again in his pocket while he pretended it didn't exist.

"Julian, I don't know..."

"Just dinner, Clara," he pleaded, reaching out and gently brushing his fingers over the back of my hand. His skin was slightly Soft. "One night. If you still feel nothing for me after that, I'll walk away and never bother you again. Please."

I looked into his eyes, seeing the boy who used to walk me home in the rain. My memories won the fight against my instincts.

"Okay," I said quietly. "Just dinner."

"I'll pick you up at seven," he said, a look of huge relief washing over his face. "Give me your number."

After we exchanged contacts, Julian kissed my cheek, a slow, warm touch that sent a shiver down my spine before excusing himself toward the hotel lobby.

I stood there for a moment, letting my breathing slow down. I needed air.

Stepping away from the loud music and crowded room, I walked down the quiet side hallway toward the floor to ceiling glass windows that overlooked the hotel's private parking courtyard.

Out in the dimly lit courtyard below, I saw a figure standing near a sleek, black European sedan.

It was Julian.

He had his back to the building, his phone pressed hard against his ear. Even through the thick glass, I could see his body stiff with anger. He was pacing back and forth, shouting into the phone, waving his free hand wildly.

Curiosity or paranoia pulled me closer to the glass.

Suddenly, a second man stepped out of the dark shadow of a nearby pillar. He was built like a brick wall, wearing a dark leather jacket, his body tense and threatening. He stepped directly into Julian's path, grabbed Julian by the front of his expensive charcoal suit, and shoved him hard against the side of the luxury car.

My heart stopped in my throat.

Julian didn't fight back. The smooth, confident man who had just kissed my cheek was cowering. He held his hands up in a defensive, pleading gesture, his mouth moving quickly as if he were begging for more time. The heavy set man slammed his palm onto the roof of Julian's car, leaned close to his face, and pressed a thick finger into Julian's chest before pointing directly toward the hotel entrance.

Toward where I was standing.

Julian slowly turned his head to look up toward the floor to ceiling glass windows of the second floor.

Our eyes locked through the dark glass.

In the shadows below, Julian didn't look like a successful, deeply affectionate first love who had come back to fix his regrets.

He looked like a desperate animal trapped in a corner.

And as he stared up at me, a cold, sickening realization hit me like a physical blow:

Julian hadn't come back into my life by accident.

And I couldn't explain why I felt that way.
