My First Love, My Worst Mistake

CLARA

The next morning....

I received a text message which arrived at 6:45 AM, long before my alarm was supposed to go off.

From Julian:

I couldn’t sleep last night, thinking about seeing you again. I’m sending something small to your office today. Can’t wait for tonight, Clara. — Julian.

I stared at my glowing phone screen in the dim light of my bedroom, my thumb hovering over the glass. The memory of last night flashed through my mind: Julian pressed against the side of a luxury car, cowering under the grip of a huge man, begging for mercy before turning his eyes directly toward me.

Every instinct I had built over six years as a senior financial analyst where I searched for hidden company problems and secret debts was screaming at me. Something was deeply, dangerously wrong with Julian Vance.

Yet, sitting safely inside my apartment, another part of me tried to explain it away.

Maybe he just had a serious business problem. Maybe it was someone collecting a debt from a company he was buying.

That was the dangerous thing about looking at the past through rose colored glasses. It made warning signs look Just like simple misunderstandings.

By 10:00 AM, my office at Sterling & Croft Financial was no longer a workplace.

It was a flower warehouse.

A delivery guy squeezed through the glass doors of our third floor department carrying a huge arrangement of two hundred long stemmed white roses. My absolute favorite in high school, a detail I hadn't thought about in ten years.

Before the whispers around the office could even die down, a second delivery guy arrived carrying a velvet box from an expensive jewelry store on 5th Avenue.

Inside was a delicate diamond tennis bracelet that sparkled under the bright office lights.

"Holy shit, Clara. Did you accidentally sleep with an oil tycoon?"

Nora Hayes walked into my corner cubicle, holding a fresh iced coffee in one hand and leaning over my partition with wide, hungry eyes.

Nora had been my best friend since our First year of college. She was beautiful in a sharp, edgy way, with black hair cut into a neat bob and a love for luxury she could never quite afford on her salary.

We had been through everything together, breakups, bad landlord fights, career promotions.

Or at least, that’s what I believed.

"It’s not an oil tycoon," I said quietly, quickly closing the velvet box. "It’s Julian."

Nora’s jaw dropped so dramatically that her straw almost slipped from her lips.

"Julian? As in Julian Vance? The high school ex who vanished into thin air and came back looking like a Greek god with a venture capital firm?"

I blinked, taking a sharp breath.

"Wait... how do you know about his venture capital firm? I didn't tell you I met him at the reunion last night."

Nora paused for a second, her eyes darting toward the glass conference room before she let out a loud, breathless laugh.

"Are you kidding? It was all over the reunion group chat last night! People were posting pictures of him stepping out of a Maybach. Someone said his firm just hit a fifty million dollar tech deal. Clara, the man is loaded! And he’s sending you diamonds on a Tuesday?"

"Nora, it feels like too much," I murmured, leaning back in my chair and crossing my arms. "He’s coming on way too strong. It’s been eight years. Plus... I saw something weird in the parking lot last night."

Nora immediately pulled up a chair, rolling it right into my desk space. She reached out and grabbed my hands with an intense energy.

"Clara, listen to me," Nora said, her voice dropping to a serious whisper. "You have been living like a nun for two years. You work fifty hours a week, you save every single penny, you put eighty percent of your salary into high interest index funds, and you never have any fun. You’re sitting on a mountain of savings and a boring life. Here comes the love of your life, rich, successful, desperately trying to make up for the past, and you’re looking for flaws?"

"I'm not looking for flaws, I'm being realistic—"

"He sent you two hundred roses!" Nora interrupted, pointing at the huge arrangement taking over my filing cabinet. "He’s trying to romance you. Don't be so cold and logical for once. Give the man a chance. What’s his net worth again? Did he mention how much cash his company has?"

The question made me pause.

"Why do you care about how much cash he has?"

Nora rolled her eyes playfully, waving her hand.

"Because I want my best friend to be married to a billionaire, obviously! I’m looking out for you. Just wear the damn bracelet and go on the date tonight."

Later that evening...

At 7:00 PM sharp, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb outside my apartment building.

When I stepped down the steps wearing a simple black silk slip dress, Julian was already standing outside the door, waiting. He wore a crisp, dark blue suit without a tie, looking effortlessly handsome and deeply attentive.

The moment his eyes landed on me, he looked genuinely breathless.

"You take my breath away, Clara," he whispered, stepping forward to open the car door for me.

L'Ermitage

We arrived at L'Ermitage, an exclusive rooftop restaurant that usually required a three month waiting list. We were led to a private corner table overlooking the glittering city skyline. Soft jazz played overhead, and the table was set with heavy silverware and flickering candles.

Julian was incredibly charming. He didn't talk about himself; he asked about me. He asked about my job, my apartment, and how much I had built for myself over the years.

"I always knew you’d do well," Julian said, taking a slow sip of a five hundred dollar bottle of red wine. "You were always the smart one, Clara. So grounded. So careful with your life. While other people waste their money on things that don't last, you build stability. That’s what I admired most about you."

"Stability is safe," I said, smiling softly, swirling the wine in my glass. "I don't like surprises, Julian."

His eyes held mine across the candlelight.

"Neither do I. Not anymore. I made my money, Clara, but my life is empty because I don't have someone real to share it with. Everyone in my industry wants something from me. They want my money, my contacts, my influence. But you... you loved me when I had nothing."

It was a brilliant line.

It hit every weak spot I had, wrapping me in a warm feeling of old romance. For two hours, the suspicious man in the parking lot faded into the background. I was sitting across from the boy who had broken my heart, listening to him tell me that losing me was the biggest regret of his life.

When the bill came, Julian casually tossed a black American Express card onto the silver tray without even looking at the total.

We walked out onto the private balcony overlooking the city skyline. The night air was cool, carrying a soft breeze that made me shiver slightly.

"Cold?" Julian asked softly.

Before I could answer, he stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms gently around my waist and pulling my back against his chest. The heat coming from him was overwhelming. He leaned down, burying his face into the curve of my neck, breathing me in.

"I missed this," he murmured against my skin, his voice thick with emotion. "I missed you."

He turned me around in his arms. In the soft moonlight, his face looked handsome and full of an almost unbearable intensity. He reached up, his fingers gently holding my jaw.

"Julian..." I breathed.

He didn't give me time to pull away. He leaned down and pressed his lips to mine.

The kiss was intense, possessive, and filled with years of things left unsaid. It tasted like old wine and dangerous promises. For a long, frightening second, my defenses completely melted. My hands found their way to his chest, gripping the fabric of his jacket as I kissed him back, letting the warmth of our past wash over me, drowning out the alarms in my head.

When he finally pulled back, his breathing was uneven, his eyes locked on mine with a fierce, burning look.

"I'm not letting you go this time, Clara," he whispered, his thumb lightly touching my lower lip. "I'm going to make up for every single year we lost. I promise you."

As he led me back toward the car, my phone buzzed in my purse. I pulled it out casually, expecting a text from Nora asking how the date was going.

It was a text from an unknown number.

If you value your life and your money, run away from Julian Vance. He isn't rich. He's a parasite. And you're his next meal.

My blood turned to ice.

I looked up sharply at Julian. He was holding the car door open for me, giving me that same perfect, gorgeous, dangerous smile.
