Chapter 1 of His Wife Wore My Mother’s Ashes to Dinner

Five years boils down to a cardboard box. I carried it out through the last gate, past the guard who didn't look up, into a morning so grey it looked like the sky had given up too. No one was waiting. I stood on the curb and counted the seconds anyway, just in case.

The bus station smelled like bleach and old coffee. I found an outlet by a vending machine and plugged in my phone, the one I hadn't touched in five years. It took a long time to wake up. Then it didn't stop buzzing.

Two hundred and eleven notifications. I scrolled through them with numb fingers until one headline stopped my hand cold.

*Patterson Heir Weds in Hudson River Spectacle — Society's Newest Golden Couple.*

There was a photo. A yacht lit up like a jewelry box, string lights strung along the rails, a woman in white laughing on the deck with her hand on her belly. I zoomed in on her face without meaning to.

It was my face. Not exactly — the nose was different, the chin softer — but the eyes, the part in the hair, the way she tilted her head. Someone had built her out of pieces of me.

Her name was Lydia Castro. The groom was Azrael Patterson.

I didn't cry. I just sat there in my wrinkled release clothes, holding a phone that still smelled like the prison laundry, and felt something in my chest go very, very quiet.

Then I got up and found a cab.

---

The marina was a wall of black cars and velvet ropes. I told the caterer at the gate that I'd forgotten my clutch inside, and she was too busy balancing a tray of champagne flutes to look at me twice. I walked up the gangway like I belonged there, which, once, I had.

I found him on the upper deck, tuxedo cut sharp against the string lights, laughing at something one of his groomsmen said. Five years. He looked the same and completely different — heavier in the shoulders, a new watch, a new confidence that used to be mine to build.

He saw me.

His face went through it fast. Shock first, his mouth actually falling open. Then something like irritation, a flick of his jaw. Then, last, the thing that scared me — nothing. Just flat, cold nothing, like a door closing.

"You shouldn't be here," he said. "This is a private event."

That was it. Five years, and that was the first thing he said to me.

"Azrael—"

"Maren." A voice, sweet as syrup, cut in from beside him. She'd appeared out of nowhere, one hand resting on the curve of her belly, the other extended toward me like we were at a garden party. "You must be an old friend. How lovely."

Up close she was worse. The dress, the hair, even the small gold hoops in her ears — I knew those earrings. They'd been my mother's. I'd left them in a jewelry box in Azrael's old apartment, the one place I never thought anyone would touch.

"Those are my mother's," I said.

Lydia's smile didn't move. "Azrael gave them to me. Isn't that sweet? A little piece of history."

I looked at him. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

---

It happened fast. Lydia stepped back toward the railing, her heel catching, a small cry — and then her hand was locked around my wrist, and we were both going over, a scream and a tangle of white silk and cold black water closing over my head.

The Hudson in November doesn't feel like water. It feels like being hit.

I came up gasping, hair plastered to my face, and heard the splash beside me — Azrael, tuxedo jacket already gone, cutting through the water in three strong strokes. Straight to her.

Not to me.

A deckhand's arm hooked under mine and hauled me up a ladder, my body shaking so hard my teeth cracked together. I stood dripping on the deck, wrapped in someone's borrowed coat, and watched Azrael carry Lydia up in his arms, her head against his shoulder, his mouth moving fast against her hair — *you're okay, I've got you, the baby's okay* — and not once, not for one second, did he look over at me.

Something in my chest that had survived five years in a cell finally, quietly, gave out.

---

The penthouse hadn't changed. Same marble floor, same view of the park I used to press my face against the glass to see. Azrael stood by the window with a drink he hadn't touched.

"You'll stay in the service room off the kitchen," he said, like he was assigning a task. "You owe me for the lawyers. For the record you've got now. For tonight."

"I owe you." I said it flat, testing the shape of it in my mouth.

"You embarrassed me in front of two hundred people."

I almost laughed. Almost.

Lydia stood in the doorway behind him, robe cinched over her belly, watching us both with the calm, patient eyes of someone counting money that already belonged to her.

I went to the service room and shut the door, and in the dark, I finally let myself shake.
