Chapter 1 of When the Cheater Begs for My Forgiveness

"Push the feed live."

Leo hesitated, his hand hovering over the master control board. "Mrs. Vance, this isn't the fourth-quarter earnings presentation."

"I know what it is, Leo. Push the button."

The control room felt like an icebox. The air conditioning blasted directly over my shoulders, chilling the sweat on my neck. Through the tinted glass window, the grand ballroom of the St. Regis stretched out below us. Five hundred employees, investors, and board members sat at round tables, clinking champagne flutes.

On the stage, my husband adjusted his silk tie.

"Julian gave me a GPS safety bracelet last month," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on the preview monitor. "He told me he worried about my late-night commutes from the office. He wanted to make sure I was always safe."

Leo swallowed hard. "That's... thoughtful of him."

"Very." I tapped the glowing blue interface on my laptop. "Except the administrator account lets the wearer reverse-track the buyer. He forgot I designed the software. Sync the coordinates to the main projector."

Leo pressed the blinking green key.

Down in the ballroom, Julian leaned into the podium microphone. The speakers in our booth crackled to life.

"We've had a record-breaking year," Julian announced, flashing his signature charming smile. "But I couldn't have navigated these challenges without my rock. My beautiful wife, Clara."

Applause rippled through the crowd.

Then, the eighty-inch LED screen behind him flickered. The corporate logo vanished.

A digital receipt materialized in its place, blown up to massive proportions.

$5,000. The Plaza Hotel. Penthouse Suite.

The applause died instantly. A low, confused murmur swept across the five hundred attendees.

Julian turned around. His smile faltered. "What is this? AV team, we have a glitch."

"Next slide," I ordered.

Leo's fingers trembled as he clicked the mouse.

Bank transfer records flashed onto the screen. $15,000 to Cartier. $8,000 to a luxury lingerie boutique. $12,000 for a weekend charter flight to Aspen.

"Turn it off!" Julian shouted, shielding his eyes from the harsh glare of the projector. He pointed frantically toward the control booth. "Cut the power!"

I leaned forward and pressed the PA intercom button. My voice echoed through the massive hall, sharp and clear.

"Why cut it, Julian? I thought we were celebrating our anniversary."

Silence slammed into the ballroom. Utter, suffocating silence. Heads snapped up toward the tinted glass of the booth.

Julian's face drained of color. He gripped the edges of the podium. "Clara? Where are you? Stop this right now. This is a sick joke."

"A joke?" I asked, keeping my tone perfectly level. "Is it a joke that you're currently checked into that penthouse suite? Or that your 'safety bracelet' pinged from your assistant's apartment three times this week?"

Whispers erupted from the tables. Chairs scraped against the marble floor.

"You're out of your mind," Julian snapped over his lapel mic. His voice pitched higher, laced with panic. "Security! Get up there and remove her!"

"Security works for the building, Julian, not for you," I reminded him. "And the building management answers to the board. The same board currently staring at your hotel bills."

Arthur Pendelton, the head of the finance committee, stood up from table one. He tossed his napkin onto his untouched plate. "Julian, what the hell is the meaning of this?"

"Arthur, please, it's a misunderstanding!" Julian pleaded, abandoning the microphone to shout directly at the older man. "Clara is unwell. She's having a mental break."

"A mental break?" I asked. "Leo, pull up the medical records from last month. The ones where Julian told the staff I was at a wellness retreat."

"Wait, no!" Julian lunged back toward the podium.

"Actually, let's skip that," I said, watching him sweat. "Let's stick to the financial fraud. You used the company expense account for the Aspen trip, didn't you?"

"Show the dinner reservations, Leo."

"Mrs. Vance, they're going to fire me," Leo whispered, backing away from the console.

"I own forty percent of this company," I replied, never taking my eyes off Julian. "Do it, and I double your salary tomorrow. Don't, and you can join him in the unemployment line."

Leo clicked the mouse.

An email confirmation filled the screen. Two guests. Le Bernardin. Tonight at nine.

"You told me you had a late board meeting," I said into the microphone. "I guess the board requires oysters and candlelight now."

Julian paced the edge of the stage, his fists clenched. "This is forged! She's hysterical! We are going through a rough patch, and she's trying to ruin the company's biggest night!"

He pointed at a woman sitting at table four. "Maya, tell them! Tell them this is a lie!"

Maya shrank into her velvet chair. She pulled her blazer tight across her chest, her face buried behind her hands. The people sitting next to her actively leaned away.

"Don't bring Maya into this," I said. "She has enough on her plate trying to afford that Cartier necklace on an assistant's salary."

Laughter and gasps echoed from the back of the room. The investors at the front tables exchanged dark looks.

"You bitch," Julian hissed. He forgot to cover his microphone. The insult boomed through the speakers.

"Show the CCTV footage," I told Leo.

"Uploading now."

The screen went black for a fraction of a second. Then, a grainy but undeniably clear image illuminated the stage.

Julian and Maya. Pressed against the mirrored wall of the Plaza Hotel elevator. His hands tangled in her hair, his mouth locked on hers. The timestamp in the corner read yesterday at 3:00 PM.

My reflection stared back at me from the dark edge of the preview monitor. A smile stretched across my face, but it felt stiff, frozen at the corners. My jaw ached from the tension. I dug my fingernails into the metal desk until my knuckles turned white.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to smash the monitors and throw the laptop through the glass. Seven years of marriage. Seven years of building this company from the ground up while he took the credit.

Instead, I kept my voice steady.

"Happy anniversary, Julian," I said into the PA. "I hope you like the gift. I kept all the receipts."

The ballroom exploded. Camera flashes strobed through the dim light. Reporters from the financial press, invited specifically by Julian to cover his triumph, shoved their way to the front of the stage with their recorders raised.

Julian ripped the lapel mic from his jacket and hurled it at the floor. The feedback shrieked, making half the room cover their ears.

He glared up at the booth, his face twisted in raw fury. "You're done, Clara! You hear me? I'll take everything! You're finished!"

He stormed off the stage, shoving a waiter aside as he headed for the emergency exit. Maya scrambled out of her chair and ran in the opposite direction.

I released the intercom button. The sudden quiet inside the booth contrasted sharply with the chaos bleeding through the glass.

"Lock the system," I told Leo. I picked up my purse from the folding chair. "Don't let anyone take that image down until the press gets their photos."

Leo nodded furiously, his eyes wide. "Yes, Mrs. Vance."

I turned toward the heavy steel door of the control room.

My phone vibrated in my coat pocket.

I pulled it out, expecting a barrage of threats from Julian. He usually flooded my inbox the second he lost control of a narrative.

Instead, an unknown number glowed on the screen.

I swiped it open.

The sender ID resolved into a name I recognized instantly.

Alexander Sterling.

The primary shareholder. The silent billionaire who owned the building, the majority stake in the company, and the board Julian spent half his life trying to impress. Alexander hadn't attended a public event in five years.

A single text message sat in the thread.

"The door is unlocked."
