Chapter 1 of Thirty Days for My Husband's Other Woman

For nineteen years, I kept our family running with color-coded calendars, hot dinners, and the career I cut in half when our son needed me.

Eric used to call me the safest place he had ever known.

When his clinic failed, he held me in our kitchen and promised he would spend the rest of his life paying me back.

I sold my mother's sapphire ring, covered his $46,000 tax lien, and believed him.

We raised Logan, posed for Christmas cards, and made our marriage look unbreakable.

For our anniversary, Eric drove me to a secluded inn and told me he had planned a surprise.

I opened the door to find Eric, sixteen-year-old Logan, and Nicole Vale seated around a recorder.

They read letters accusing me of controlling meals, curfews, and text messages.

Then Logan asked me to move out for thirty days so they could live normally with “Aunt Nicole.”

I stepped into the hallway and heard their voices through the door.

“Thirty days is enough,” Nicole said.

“Once Julia leaves, you can move in Monday,” Eric answered.

“And Mom thinks this is therapy?” Logan asked.

“She only needs to believe it until she signs,” Nicole said.

"This isn't a celebration, Julia," Eric said, shoving the silver-embossed anniversary envelope back against my chest. "It’s an honesty exercise."

I stared at the bare skin on his left hand. His wedding band was gone.

My phone buzzed in his palm. The screen lit up: Nicole.

"Nineteen years," I said, my voice flat. I was a forty-two-year-old registered dietitian, not a fool. For four months, I had endured his cold shoulder and midnight texts, thinking this weekend cabin retreat was his way of fixing us.

"Don't try to control the room like you always do," he muttered, turning the brass doorknob.

Nine years ago, I pulled my mother’s oval sapphire ring from its blue velvet box and sold it for forty-six thousand dollars to pay off the tax lien on his failing clinic. He swore then he would never let me carry the weight of our family alone.

Before the heavy oak door swung fully open, a hushed voice drifted from inside.

"Is she really going to sign it?"

It was Logan. Our sixteen-year-old son.

I stepped over the threshold. Three folding chairs sat in a tight semicircle, facing a single wooden stool. A digital voice recorder sat on the coffee table, its red light blinking next to a stack of papers boldly titled Thirty-Day Family Reset.

A woman occupied the center chair. Her plastic nametag read Nicole Vale, Family Health Consultant. No state license number accompanied the title.

"Have a seat in the identified controller chair, Julia," Nicole instructed, gesturing to the solitary wooden stool.

I remained standing. "Who are you?"

Eric stepped past me, taking the chair to Nicole’s left. Logan sat on her right.

"We are establishing boundaries," Eric announced. He unfolded a typed letter. "Your insistence on low-sodium dinners. The texts you send when I work late. It’s relentless monitoring."

He paused, tapping the paper. "You questioned three hotel charges last month. One thousand, one hundred and forty-six dollars. It’s pathological jealousy, Julia."

I shifted my gaze to Logan. My son clutched his own sheet of paper, his knuckles white.

"Read it, Logan," Nicole coaxed.

Logan kept his eyes glued to the paper. "Making me come home by eleven o'clock... checking my location sharing... it's a gross invasion of privacy."

He didn't look at me. He glanced up at Nicole, waiting for her slight nod of approval.

A hollow ache settled in my chest.

"Julia, you're not the family dietitian right now, nor our supervisor," Eric said, crossing his arms. "You're just the one who needs correcting."

Logan swallowed hard, reading the final typed line. "If you really love us, you'll move out for thirty days. Let us try living a normal life with Aunt Nicole."

He slid a silver spare house key across the table. The metal scraped harshly against the wood, stopping right in front of Nicole.

I stared at the woman. Nicole Vale. The N.V. on those hotel receipts. The woman Eric had spent four months dismissing as a corporate wellness consultant.

"You don't have a license," I stated, noting the cheap printout peeking from her binder. It was a weekend online course certificate.

"I provide a stress-free environment," Nicole countered smoothly, crossing her legs. "Something you have proven incapable of doing."

I didn't defend the dinners. I didn't justify keeping my teenager safe at night. Instead of yelling, I pointed at the blinking red light.

"Did anyone get my consent to record this?"

"This recording proves you refuse treatment," Nicole replied.

Eric pushed the thick agreement toward my edge of the table. "Just sign it. It's temporary."

"I need to use the restroom," I said, turning on my heel.

I walked down the narrow hallway and slipped into the bathroom, leaving the door cracked open an inch. Voices carried easily through the thin cabin walls.

"Thirty days is plenty of time," Nicole murmured. "I can start moving my things in by Monday."

"As long as she believes this is just therapy until she signs the paper, we're fine," Eric replied.

A beat of silence passed.

"Dad," Logan asked, his voice wavering. "Does Mom know Aunt Nicole is taking the master bedroom?"

I pushed the bathroom door open and walked straight back to the coffee table.

Three pairs of eyes tracked my movements.

I picked up the black pen resting beside the recorder. I flipped the thick document to the final signature page. With a swift, heavy stroke, I crossed out the words temporary reset.

Above it, I wrote permanent separation.

I dropped the pen. It clattered against the plastic recorder.

Eric bolted upright. "Stop acting out, Julia. This is serious."

Logan stared at the crossed-out words. "Are you seriously not even willing to sacrifice thirty days for your family?"

I looked at my son, then at my husband.

"The things I've sacrificed, you three just proved you never saw," I said, my tone dead quiet. "So I'm no longer submitting an application to be a good wife or mother."

I turned and walked toward the front door.

Inside my leather tote bag, my fingers brushed against the rough edge of a blue folder. The embossed lettering at the top read Harbor Family Trust. Tucked inside was the property confirmation document Eric had notarized three years ago.

I didn't look back. I didn't remind them that the house they planned to reassign to Nicole never belonged to Eric in the first place.

The gravel crunched beneath my shoes as I reached my car. I pulled out my phone and dialed.

"Dana," I said the second my lawyer answered. "Change the thirty days to a permanent separation."

I flipped open the blue folder against the steering wheel. The thick parchment rustled loudly enough for the phone mic to catch.

Dana paused for half a second. "Does Eric even remember whose property confirmation he signed?"
