Trapped at a Business Dinner They Tried to Scam Me for $200,000

The dinner was routine—clients, a restaurant we used all the time.

After the meal, the server handed me two bills. One was twenty thousand for our table. The other was two hundred thousand.

"President Gilbert, this is the bill your father-in-law ran up at our restaurant. He said you'd be settling it."

The server looked at me with a rehearsed smile.

I frowned.

Single. No father-in-law. Never had one.

And a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bill, suddenly handed to me out of nowhere—what exactly was this?

"This bill isn't mine. Whoever ate that meal, you take it up with them. I'm paying for what I ordered."

I was about to settle the twenty thousand when the server raised his voice: "President Gilbert, you can't just eat here and refuse to pay!"

Every guest in the room turned to stare at me. I let out a cold laugh.

Then I made a call.

"Officer, I'm at Harborview. Someone just handed me a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bill and is trying to extort me."

"And send the consumer protection office too—I'm looking at charges that have been jacked up."

The moment I hung up, the room went dead silent. The clients at the surrounding tables all turned to look at me.

A few long-term clients I'd partnered with asked what happened. I told them about the bill, and every one of them called it absurd.

One after another, they demanded the restaurant explain itself.

The manager showed up fast.

I glanced at his name tag.

Toby Dickerson. Manager of this restaurant. I came here often enough that we knew each other.

Most days, Toby would greet me the second he spotted me. But right now, his eyes carried a flicker of something tight and rushed.

He looked at me. "President Gilbert, what's going on?"

"Come on, it's just a meal. Why bring the police into it?"

"You've got clients here—you don't want this turning into a whole thing, and neither do we."

"Just pay the bill and be done with it."

"President Gilbert, it's not like this kind of money means anything to you. Right?"

He said it like he meant every word.

I looked back at him, cold.

"Manager Dickerson, if this were my bill, I'd pay it without question."

"But it isn't my bill."

"So why don't you tell me what exactly is going on?"

I held up the two-hundred-thousand-dollar bill, pointed at it, and fixed Toby with a hard stare.

Two hundred thousand, dumped on me, pinned to some father-in-law I didn't have. I'd have to be out of my mind to accept that.

Toby's expression soured. "President Gilbert, the man is absolutely your father-in-law."

"I've personally seen you dining with him here. More than once."

He said it with total certainty. My face darkened.

Every time I came to this restaurant, it was for business dinners. The people at my table were always clients.

And now Toby was claiming I'd dined with this person.

Insisting, over and over, that the man was my father-in-law.

I kept my voice flat. "Manager Dickerson, you've got the wrong person."

"I know exactly how many meals I've had in this restaurant."

"And when have I ever brought someone in for a two-hundred-thousand-dollar table?"

I jabbed a finger at the bill. "Eight bottles of premium red wine alone, over ten thousand a bottle."

"You really think I'm going to pay this?"

Toby's face had gone white with anger. He stared at me, then spoke. "President Gilbert, the fact that you're even sitting here tonight is because I gave you face."
