Chapter 1 of On Our Anniversary, He Ended Our Empire
Serena’s POV
It was our ninth wedding anniversary, but Nico Vescari—the don of the Vescari Syndicate—walked into the estate with his pregnant mistress.
Nine years I stood as his wife. Nine years I sat beside a man who ran half the underworld through blood contracts, black-market alliances, and boardroom executions disguised as “business decisions.”
To the outside world, Nico Vescari was a CEO.
Inside the city’s shadows, he was the Don.
And I was supposed to be his queen.
Until today.
“She’s sensitive right now,” Nico said flatly, pulling the woman closer to his side like she belonged in his empire. “No repeated meals. She needs proper care. Move to the guest villa, Serena.”
My fingers went cold. “Are you serious right now? On our anniversary?”
His eyes didn’t even flicker. “Don’t turn this into a scene.”
“A scene?” I let out a sharp laugh. “You bring your pregnant secretary into a mafia estate and expect me to just step aside?”
The room went dead silent.
His capos lined the walls. Men who had once called me Mrs. Vescari, who used to lower their heads when I entered.
Now they watched like I was already disposable.
Nico’s voice dropped—low, final. “I said move.”
Something in my chest cracked, but I didn’t back down.
“I’m not staying here while you humiliate me in front of your syndicate,” I said quietly. “I’m done, Nico.”
A few of his men shifted, amused. Like they’d seen this before. Like every wife in their world eventually folded.
Nico scoffed. “You’ll come back in a week. You always do.”
That was the thing about men like him.
They never believed women left.
I already had my exit planned anyway. The car outside wasn’t his. It was my cousin’s—Norththorn Holdings. A name even Nico couldn’t casually touch without consequences.
I reached for my bags.
Then he spoke again.
“Leave the Moonstone bracelet.”
I froze.
Slowly, I turned. “What?”
His gaze flicked to my wrist. “Give it to Natalie.”
The Moonstone bracelet—my grandmother’s last gift to me. The only thing I had left that wasn’t stained by his world.
My throat tightened. “Nico… don’t.”
Natalie smiled faintly behind him, hand resting on her stomach like a trophy that needed display lighting.
“I said give it to her,” he repeated.
Silence pressed in.
I walked forward on autopilot.
My fingers shook as I unclasped it.
For a second, everything in me screamed not to do it.
But I still placed it on her wrist.
“Take it,” I whispered.
The moment the clasp closed—
Natalie gasped.
A thin red line appeared on her skin like a burn. She staggered back instantly, clutching her wrist.
“It hurts—what did you do to me?” she cried.
“I didn’t—” My voice broke. “I didn’t do anything.”
Nico was already there, catching her before she fell. The shift in him was instant—protective, sharp, lethal.
Then he looked at me.
Like I had just crossed a line in blood.
“What did you do to her?” His voice was ice. “Jealousy has rotted your head that much?”
“I swear I didn’t—”
“Call the medic,” he barked. Then his eyes cut back to me. “You. Clean this mess.”
My gaze dropped.
The bracelet had snapped. Moonstone scattered across the marble like broken bone.
I knelt without thinking.
The shards cut into my palms, but I kept picking them up anyway.
One by one.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered—once, twice, I didn’t know who anymore.
When I stood again, blood was already staining my fingers.
“Is that what you wanted?” I asked softly.
Nico didn’t answer.
His voice came colder instead. “The woman who used to matter to me doesn’t exist anymore.”
Something inside me went quiet at that.
No anger.
No pleading.
Just… emptiness.
I wiped my hands on a cloth, picked up my bag, and walked toward the doors.
Behind me, his world kept moving—doctors, capos, orders being given.
No one stopped me.
Not even him.
Because in the Vescari Syndicate, women didn’t leave.
They were either owned…
or erased.
And this time, I chose neither.
