Chapter 1 of My Alpha Tried to Sacrifice Me to Save His Sister

The bond burned at 8:42 on the night Carter put his hand on another woman's waist.

I felt the mark before I saw the gesture — a thin white wire dragged taut under the skin of my neck, then a slow, sick heat blooming where his teeth had broken me six years ago. I sat in the back row of the Reynolds estate great hall, in the gray dress they gave the Omega servants, and watched Alpha Carter Reynolds lift Jenna Stevens's hand to his mouth.

"My intended Luna," he said. His voice carried without effort. "Daughter of Alpha Franklin Stevens of the Silvercrest Pack."

The hall erupted. Glasses lifted. Jenna's white gown caught the chandelier light like something staged. Carter's palm slid down to her waist, and the mark on my neck pulsed once, hard, and then went hot — not pain like a cut, pain like a door being held open inside me so something could pass through.

I breathed through it. Twice. That was all I allowed myself.

Eight weeks. I had counted three times. I had drawn my own blood in the supply closet two mornings ago and read the result with my own hands because there was no healer in this pack I could trust. Eight weeks of a child that was already learning the shape of the room I was sitting in.

I stood up.

The Omega beside me whispered my name. I did not look at her. I walked the length of the hall down the center aisle, past the long tables, past the Beta in his pressed jacket, past Elina Reynolds, who watched me come with the bored attention she gave to weather. The pack saw me. The murmuring fell off in pieces, table by table, like candles going out.

I reached the dais. I took the folded paper from the inside of my sleeve. I knelt — once, fast, the way an Omega kneels — and set it on the polished floor at Carter's feet.

"Formal pack transfer request," I said. My voice came out flat and exact. "Submitted to the Alpha for release."

Jenna's smile did not move. It simply stopped being a smile and became an arrangement of teeth.

Carter looked down at the paper. He looked at me. The cedar-and-iron scent of him slid across the dais and into my lungs, and the mark under my collar went hot again, a warning the bond had been trained to give.

He bent. He picked up the paper. He did not unfold it. He tucked it into the inside pocket of his jacket as if I had handed him a wine list.

"Administrative matter," he said, smiling at the hall. "Please — continue."

The music started again before I was off the dais.

---

He found me in the corridor outside the Omega quarters that night.

He did not touch me. He did not need to. His aura came first, a pressure change like a held breath in the hallway, and then he was in front of me, and the bond pulled my spine straight against the wall without my consent.

"Look at me."

Alpha tone. It went through the mark and into the base of my skull and my chin lifted on its own. My jaw locked. My throat sealed. My hands stayed at my sides because he had decided they would.

"That was a tantrum," he said. Quiet. Reasonable. "You embarrassed me in front of the Stevens delegation. You will not file another transfer. You will not speak of one. You are mine, Leia. That has not changed."

He waited until I could not have answered if I tried. Then he released me and walked away.

I stayed against the wall a long time. My hands started shaking — not from grief. From inventory. Every legal door inside the pack: closed. Every administrative path: closed. The bond itself was the lock.

Under my ribs, something moved. Low. Furious. A pulse I had not felt in months, the shape of a wolf I had stopped believing in. I did not push her down.

I let her burn.

---

In the morning I went to the infirmary and found Elina's wraps already laid out on my station — gauze pre-soaked in the wolfsbane-neutralizing solution she ordered to scrub the drain residue off my neck before anyone outside the household could smell it.

I set the wraps aside. I went into the supply closet. I drew a vial of my own blood from the inside of my left arm, sealed it with healer's wax, and slid it into the lining of my sleeve. Then I came back out, wrapped my own neck in Elina's gauze, and restocked the shelves in the order I had restocked them for six years.

Jenna came in at ten.

"Luna-candidate welfare inspection," she announced, warm enough for the room. She moved down the ward, touching shoulders, complimenting the Omegas by name. She stopped in front of me.

"Carter told me about your little paper," she said, low. "He thought it was funny. After the mating ceremony next month, we'll be reviewing Omega assignments. Some positions may be eliminated."

She turned to go. Paused at the doorway.

"You look pale, Leia. Are you feeling well?"

I met her eyes.

"I'm fine."

She smiled, and lifted a slim phone from her sleeve, and said into it as she walked out — "Tell my father the Ironveil schedule needs to move up."
