My Alpha Replaced Me, Then Begged for My Power Summary

It was supposed to be her coronation night. Under the glowing full moon, she approached Xavier in her hand-picked Luna gown, only to face the ultimate betrayal. Her mate of ten years turned his back, casting her aside without a word. Instead, Kailani Gray stepped forward to lace her fingers with Xavier's, claiming the pack's highest rank before the allied Alphas. In one cruel instant, her life and love were completely shattered.

Chapter 1 of My Alpha Replaced Me, Then Begged for My Power

The rejection hit at 9:47 on a Friday night, under a full moon so bright it whitewashed the ceremonial stones.

I was three steps from the dais in the Luna gown I had chosen myself—white silk, silver thread at the hem, the crescent stitched over my heart the way Xavier's mother had done it for hers. My hand was already lifting toward his. Ten years of muscle memory. Ten years of walking to him.

He didn't take it.

He turned to the crowd instead, and Kailani Gray stepped out from behind the columns like she'd been waiting for a cue. Her fingers laced through his the way mine were supposed to. She smiled at the three allied Alphas in the front row. Xavier didn't look at me at all.

"I, Xavier Hale, Alpha of Ironridge," he said, and his Alpha tone carried it across three hundred throats, "reject you, Rowan Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Then empty. Like a door closing on an empty room, then the room itself falling away. Something split open along the old bite—wet, black, wrong—and I felt it slide down under my collar. My wolf let out one sound inside my skull, a howl that was not a howl, more like a body hitting concrete from a great height, and then she wasn't answering.

My knees found the stone before my mind did.

I heard someone gasp. Not for me. At me. The Alpha of Silver Hollow leaned to whisper to his Beta. Somebody's champagne flute clinked against a tray.

Xavier was already speaking again. "Kailani Gray will stand as my chosen mate. Future Luna of Ironridge."

I pushed up on one hand. The black blood on the stone was tacky under my palm. I got my feet under me. I said, "Xavier—"

One word. That was all I got out.

His Alpha tone hit me like a hand at the back of my neck. I heard it before I felt it—a low pressure that rolled through the marrow of my legs and folded them. My forehead went to the stone. My chin tipped up on its own, throat bared to the moon and to the three hundred witnesses and to the woman wearing my color at the top of the dais. I could not close my mouth. I could not close my eyes.

"Take her out," Xavier said, easy, the way you'd tell someone to take out the trash.

His Beta's hands were on my arms. Rough. He dragged me down the ceremonial aisle, and the black from my mark left a thin wet stripe on the stones, and nobody—nobody—stepped forward.

The basement smelled like damp concrete and old iron.

They put me in the rogue cell. Single bulb. No window. A drain in the center of the floor. The Beta didn't meet my eyes when he shut the door. Above me, through six feet of concrete, the celebration music started up—a slow song, the one Xavier and I had danced to at our first Mate Ceremony. I sat on the cot and listened to it end, and then to the announcement of Kailani being escorted to my quarters, my closet, my bed.

I put my hand to my neck. Dry now. Cold.

Deep inside, past the wreckage, something pushed through. Not words exactly. A pressure. Three beats of it against the inside of my chest.

Still here. Not gone. Not yet.

I closed my eyes and let her breathe against my ribs and did not cry.

Instead I began, quietly, to count. The ward's four anchor points along the northern ridge. The seam I'd left thin above the eastern creek, because it was easier to feed. The soft place near the old logging road where rogues had almost broken through in year three, and where I had spent nine months of my own wolf's strength patching it. Every crack Xavier's borders had. Every one I was still holding shut with a body he had just thrown down a flight of stairs.

He had never seen my wolf. Not once, in ten years, had I let him.

He did not know what he had locked in his basement.

Morning came without light. I heard boots on the stairs before I heard the shouting.

"—no Council writ, no Alpha convocation, and you demote a sitting Luna to Omega on your own word? On hers?"

Declan. Head trainer. The friend I had grown up beside before I ever smelled Xavier on the wind. I sat up.

"You will lower your voice," Xavier said, upstairs, muffled through concrete.

"I will not."

There was a wet sound. A grunt. Then more than one pair of boots, and then the specific rhythm of a beating—fists first, then something heavier, a baton maybe, and Declan not going down easy, Declan taking it standing until he couldn't. I counted the blows. I made myself count them.

When they dragged him past my cell door, I saw one boot go by the grate. Blood on the laces.

Later—hours, I think—the door opened, and Walter Hale filled it. He limped in with a plate of something gray and set it on the floor like he was feeding a dog.

"Get up, girl."

I got up.

He looked me over. The gown was ruined. The mark under my collar had crusted black. He smiled with only the bottom half of his face.

"Moon Goddess made a mistake with you, breeder. My son's finally correcting it." He tapped the plate with his cane. "Eat. You start scrubbing the warriors' hall at dawn."

He turned to leave. At the door, without looking back, he added, almost cheerful:

"Gamma's bringing the silver up in the morning. For your wrist."
