Chapter 1 of Betrayed by My Fated Mate

I have loved Bryce Hayes for eight years without ever being asked to.

That's the part no one knows. Not Mira, not the pack, not the man himself. Just me, and the wolf inside me who went quiet a long time ago — not from grief, but from the slow, steady drain of giving everything to someone who never once looked your way.

My name is Lilly Evans. I'm a Delta in the Ironveil Pack, twenty-four years old, unremarkable by every measure that matters here. I train with the warriors. I file reports. I keep my head down and my scar covered and I tell myself that proximity is enough. That watching him lead from a distance is enough. That knowing I saved his life — even if he never knows it — is enough.

It was enough. Until tonight.

---

The rain started around seven.

I remember that detail clearly because I'd been watching the sky on the drive back from the eastern border checkpoint, thinking the clouds looked wrong — too low, too fast, the kind of weather that makes your wolf uneasy for reasons she can't name. Mine had been restless all day. A low, anxious hum beneath my ribs that I kept pushing down.

I should have listened.

The road through the forest edge is narrow and poorly lit, a stretch of cracked asphalt that the pack uses for patrol routes but rarely maintains. My headlights caught the rain in sheets. I was maybe two miles from the pack house when the first figure stepped into the road.

I hit the brakes.

There were three of them. Big, loose-limbed, with that particular stillness that rogues have — the kind that comes from spending too long outside a pack's structure, where the wolf starts bleeding into the man. I had half a second to register the wrongness of it, the way they were already moving toward my car with too much purpose for a random encounter, before the driver's side window exploded inward.

The silver hit my skin before I could shift.

I don't remember much after that. Flashes. The cold of the road through my jacket. The sound of rain. A burning in my side that went deeper than muscle, deeper than bone — the particular agony of silver contamination working through a wolf that was already compromised, already running on less than she should have been. My wolf tried to surface and couldn't. She flickered like a candle in a draft.

I remember thinking, very clearly, through the pain: *not like this.*

The pack warriors found me on the road. I know this only because I woke up here, in the healing ward, with the antiseptic smell and the white ceiling and the particular silence of a room where people have been careful not to make noise.

---

I don't know how long I was out.

Long enough for the silver burns to be bandaged. Long enough for the ward to empty out. Long enough for Bryce to come and go without stopping at my door.

I heard him before I saw him — or rather, I heard him and never saw him at all. His voice carries the way Alpha voices do, that low authoritative register that moves through walls like they're suggestions. He was in the corridor. Maybe ten feet from where I was lying.

He was talking to Daniel.

"The Mate Ceremony proceeds on schedule," Bryce said. "Tell the council."

Daniel's voice, quieter: "And the transfusion? Jessica's diagnosis—"

"Evans is the closest viable match in the pack." A pause. Not a thoughtful one. The kind of pause that means the decision is already made and the speaker is simply allowing the other person to catch up. "She'll agree to the blood-bond transfusion. Make sure she understands the Ceremony depends on it."

Footsteps. Moving away.

That was it. No visit. No *how are you, did you survive, are you in pain.* Just a supply requisition delivered through a wall, and then the sound of his boots on the corridor floor, getting quieter.

I lay there and stared at the ceiling.

A second transfusion.

He didn't know — couldn't know — what that meant. He didn't know that the first one had been mine. He didn't know that I had survived it only because of what we were to each other, a connection he'd never felt and I'd never claimed. He didn't know that my wolf was already running on borrowed strength, that the silver from tonight had taken something I wasn't sure I could get back.

He didn't know any of it. And he hadn't asked.

I closed my eyes. Somewhere deep inside me, in the warm golden place where my wolf lived, something went very still.

---

The door opened an hour later.

I knew it wasn't a healer. The footsteps were too deliberate, too unhurried — the walk of someone who has already won and wants to take their time arriving.

Jessica Arnold was in a wheelchair. She looked pale and fragile and perfectly arranged, the way she always did, like a painting of suffering rather than the real thing. She waited until the door clicked shut behind her. Then the performance dropped.

It was almost impressive, how fast it happened. One moment she was the tragic, ailing she-wolf. The next she was just a woman looking at me with flat, cold eyes.

"You look terrible," she said pleasantly.

I didn't answer.

"I heard about the rogues." She tilted her head. "Terrible luck. These things happen near the border, I suppose."

She let that sit there. I let it sit there too.

"He didn't come see you," she said. "Did he." Not a question.

I looked at the window. Rain still. The glass was fogged at the edges.

"Eight years." Her voice was almost gentle. "Eight years you've been here, quiet as a shadow, and he has never once looked at you the way you wanted him to. I've watched you watch him, Lilly. It's actually a little sad." She smoothed the blanket across her lap. "You made it so easy. Your silence. Your patience. You handed me everything and then stood back and waited for someone to notice."

She leaned forward slightly.

"No one noticed. No one is going to. And even if you told him right now — even if you walked out there and said *I was the donor, it was my blood, I saved your life* — do you really think he'd believe a damaged she-wolf over eight years of records?" She smiled. "Over me?"

The room was very quiet.

I turned my head and looked at her. Really looked at her — the careful construction of her, the wheelchair she didn't need, the pallor she'd probably practiced in a mirror.

She was right about one thing. My silence had made it easy.

But she was wrong about what I was going to do with it now.
