Chapter 1 of When My Alpha Tried to Claim My Unborn Pup

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, three seconds before Jack's teeth were supposed to pierce my neck.

I stood at the altar in white with my throat bared. Three hundred wolves packed the ceremony hall—every Delta, every elder, every pack family who'd watched me grow up believing I'd be their Luna. The air smelled like pine garland and the honey cakes stacked on tables in the next room. Jack's breath was warm against my skin. His hand steadied my shoulder. The pack had gone so silent I could hear my own pulse.

Then his fingers went rigid.

His eyes glazed—the telltale flat look of an incoming mind-link. I felt his attention fracture and leave me even before his hand dropped away. He stepped back. The warmth on my neck disappeared.

"I, Jack Powell, Alpha of Shadowridge, reject you, Olive Griffin, as my mate and Luna."

The words hit like a physical blow. The mark on my neck—the one that had been warm and alive since the Moon Goddess confirmed our bond two years ago—went ice-cold. It felt like someone had pressed a frozen coin to my throat and held it there. Then the cold spread inward.

The bond tore.

It wasn't metaphorical. It was a claw ripping through my chest from the inside, shredding something I didn't have a name for. Every nerve ending fired at once. My wolf—who'd been humming with anticipation seconds before—let out a single, devastating keen that only I could hear. Then she went silent. Completely silent. The space inside me where she'd always been felt hollow and wrong, like a room with all the furniture removed.

I did not scream.

My knees wanted to buckle. My lungs wanted to stop. But my wolf—broken, furious, still conscious enough to know we were being watched—shoved one coherent thought through the biological agony: *Stand*.

So I stood.

I straightened my spine. I turned to face the three hundred wolves staring at me in frozen silence. Some had their mouths open. Others looked at the floor. The pack elders in the front row had gone pale. No one moved. No one breathed.

I spoke.

"The ceremony feast will be redirected in full to the territory's displaced Omegas." My voice came out steady. Measured. It didn't sound like mine. "Thank you all for your presence."

I walked.

Not ran. Walked. Down the aisle between rows of stunned wolves, past the honey cakes and the pine garland, past Jack's parents sitting rigid in their seats. The cold mark on my neck pulsed with every step—a second heartbeat made of ice. My hands didn't shake. My eyes stayed dry.

Kiara Medina was the only wolf who followed me out.

She caught my arm in the corridor outside the pack house. "Olive. What do you need."

It wasn't a question. It was an offer.

The composure cracked.

Just for three seconds. My hands shook. My breath came in one sharp, involuntary gasp as another wave of bond-severance pain rolled through me—this one deeper, colder, like my body was trying to reject an organ it no longer recognized. I pressed two fingers to the mark on my neck. It felt dead under my skin.

Then I locked it back down.

"I need my travel documents from the Alpha's office safe," I said quietly. "And I need you to stay in Shadowridge."

Kiara's eyes narrowed. "Stay?"

"Not to watch Jack." I met her gaze. "To watch Molly."

Something shifted in Kiara's expression. Recognition. She nodded once. "How long?"

"Until you find what I think you're going to find."

She didn't ask me to clarify. She was a tracker. She knew.

I reached the door. My hands were steady by the time I pushed it open.

That night, alone in the quarters I'd once shared with Jack, I went to the pack healer for bond-severance stabilization. Standard protocol. She examined me in silence—checked my pulse, my temperature, the cold mark on my neck. Then she went very still.

"You're pregnant," she said.

I stared at her.

"Five months along." Her voice was clinical. Professional. "The bond's hormonal chaos masked it. The pup is healthy. Fully formed."

I sat with that information for sixty seconds. The healer watched me. Waiting for me to cry, maybe. Or scream. Or ask her what I was supposed to do now.

I did none of those things.

"Print a copy of the records," I said.

She blinked. "The... records?"

"All of them. Ultrasound. Bloodwork. Timeline confirmation."

She printed them. I folded the pages into my pocket and thanked her in the same tone I'd used to dismiss three hundred wolves from a ceremony that was supposed to make me their queen.

I didn't tell Jack.

Two days later, he appeared at my door.

He didn't knock. He used his key—the one I hadn't thought to ask for back yet—and walked into the quarters like he still had a right to be there. He looked tired. Rumpled. His shirt was wrinkled.

"Olive, I need you to understand—"

"No."

He stopped. Blinked. "What?"

"I don't need to understand." I stayed where I was, standing by the window. "You made yourself clear at the altar. In front of three hundred wolves. I heard you the first time."

"Molly's bond-fracture episode was severe." His voice took on the Alpha tone—not a command, just the texture of authority he couldn't turn off. "The pack needed their Alpha to respond. I had no choice."

My wolf surged forward.

Not in submission. In cold, clarifying rage.

I turned to face him fully. "You're right. You didn't have a choice. You made it. And now I'm making mine."

I walked to the door and opened it.

"Leave."

Jack stared at me. He wasn't used to this. To doors that closed. To sentences that ended without negotiation.

"Olive—"

"Leave."

He left.

I closed the door and stood there for a long moment, listening to his footsteps fade down the corridor. The cold mark on my neck pulsed once—twice—then went still.

I pressed my hand to my belly. Five months. A pup I hadn't known I was carrying. A bond that was dead but still aching in my throat like a scar that wouldn't heal.

I had Kiara watching Molly. I had my travel documents in the safe. I had a copy of the healer's records in my pocket.

And I had a plan.
