Chapter 1 of After My Mate Branded Me Rogue

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I felt it the moment Eli stood up at the Alpha table. The mark on my neck went cold first — not painful, just empty, like someone had scooped out the warmth and left a hollow behind. I pressed my thumb against it without thinking, the old reflex kicking in before my brain could catch up.

The great hall was full. Every ranked wolf in Ironvale had come for the banquet. Five years. Our mating anniversary. I'd dressed carefully tonight — the deep green dress Eli liked, my hair pinned the way he'd once said made me look softer. I'd even skipped my evening suppressant dose because I wanted to feel the bond fully tonight, wanted to let myself hope that maybe this year he'd finally see me the way I saw him.

Stupid.

Eli's voice cut through the noise. "I have an announcement."

The hall went quiet. I looked up, smiling, because I thought — God, I actually thought — he was going to say something sweet. Something about us.

His eyes met mine across the room. There was nothing in them. No warmth. No regret. Just a flatness that made my stomach drop before he even opened his mouth.

"I, Eli Thorne, Beta of the Ironvale Pack, reject you, Olive Mercer, as my mate."

The words hit like a physical blow. The mark on my neck went from cold to ice in an instant, a freezing burn that radiated down my spine. My wolf — silent for five years, buried so deep I'd almost forgotten she existed — erupted inside my skull with a scream so loud I couldn't hear anything else.

My knees buckled. I hit the stone floor hard, palms scraping, the impact jarring up through my wrists. The hall blurred. Voices rose around me — shock, whispers, someone laughing — but all I could hear was my wolf howling, clawing at the inside of my ribs like she was trying to break out through bone.

I couldn't breathe. The bond was severing, tearing away from something deep in my chest, and it hurt in a way I didn't have words for. Not sharp. Worse. Like watching a part of myself die in real time and being forced to stay conscious for it.

Footsteps. Blakely Archer stepped forward from the Alpha table, her red dress catching the firelight, her smile sharp and satisfied. She stopped beside Eli and laid her hand on his arm like she owned him.

Maybe she did now.

"Olive has served this pack as an Omega," Eli said, his voice steady, formal, like he was reading from a script. "But she is defective. No wolf. No strength. She is unworthy of a Beta's bond."

Defective.

The word landed in the silence like a stone in still water. Ripples of agreement spread through the crowd. I saw heads nodding. Heard murmurs of assent. Of course. It made sense to them. The Omega who never shifted, who scrubbed floors and kept her head down — of course she wasn't enough.

Blakely leaned into Eli's side. "I accept you, Eli Thorne, as my chosen mate."

Chosen. Not fated. Chosen.

Something cracked open inside me. Not the bond — that was already gone, a cold scar where warmth used to live. This was something else. Something that had been caged for five years, buried under suppressants and good behavior and the desperate need to be small enough that Eli would never feel lesser beside me.

My wolf stopped screaming.

She went very, very still.

And then she growled.

It wasn't loud. I don't think anyone else heard it. But I felt it vibrate through my bones, felt something enormous and silver unfurl inside me like wings I'd forgotten I had.

I pressed my thumb harder against the dead mark on my neck. The pain helped. Grounded me. I pushed myself up off the floor, ignoring the way my hands shook, ignoring the cold sweat on my skin and the way the hall spun at the edges.

I stood.

Eli's expression flickered — surprise, maybe, that I was still upright. Blakely's smile tightened.

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man I'd loved for five years. The man I'd made myself small for. The man who had just called me defective in front of everyone who mattered.

"I, Olive Mercer," I said, and my voice came out steady, clear, cold as the mark on my neck, "accept your rejection, Eli Thorne, and release you."

The formal words sealed it. The last thread of the bond snapped clean. Eli flinched — just once, barely visible — and I knew he felt it too. The emptiness where something used to be.

Good.

I turned and walked toward the doors. No one stopped me. No one spoke. The hall stayed silent except for the sound of my footsteps on stone and the low crackle of the fire.

I didn't take anything with me. No bag. No coat. Nothing from the Omega den or the five years I'd spent trying to be enough.

I just walked out.

Behind me, I heard Blakely's voice, bright and false. "Well. That was easier than expected."

I didn't look back.

The night air hit me like cold water. I crossed the pack grounds, passed the training yard and the boundary markers, and kept walking until I reached the edge of Ironvale territory.

The border was marked by a line of old stones half-buried in the dirt. I stopped at the edge, one foot on Ironvale land, one foot in the neutral borderlands beyond.

The mind-link hummed at the base of my skull — the pack bond, the connection to every wolf in Ironvale, the constant low-level awareness that I was part of something.

I reached for it mentally. Found the thread.

And yanked.

It tore free with a sound like ripping fabric inside my head. The pack bond shredded, the link collapsing in on itself, and suddenly the constant hum was just — gone. Silence. Real silence, for the first time in five years.

I stepped over the border.

Somewhere behind me, back in the great hall, Eli Thorne felt the phantom ache of a bond he'd chosen to destroy settle into his chest like a stone.

I didn't feel it.

I didn't feel anything.

I walked into the dark, and the silver in my eyes didn't fade when I blinked.
