When My Alpha Took Our Pup to Save His Lover’s Son

I spent five years playing the perfect Luna to Alpha Cassian, ignoring his devotion to his widowed lover, Katherine. But when tragedy strikes, Cassian commits the ultimate betrayal—taking our own pup to save Katherine's son. To protect my child from the mate who abandoned us, I must tear our pack apart.

Chapter 1 of When My Alpha Took Our Pup to Save His Lover’s Son

The harvest-moon banquet smelled like roasted venison and old wine, and underneath it all, like a lie that had been sitting too long in a warm room.

I sat in the Luna's chair beside Cassian, my spine straight, my hands folded in my lap the way I had been taught to fold them five years ago when he first put the mark on my neck. The hall was full. Every senior pack member, every Delta, every mated pair in their best wool and silk. Candles down the long table. Katherine seated three chairs to Cassian's right, her son Rowen tucked pale and quiet against her side, her widow-mark visible at her collar the way it always was — visible enough to be seen, not so much it looked planned.

It always looked planned to me. I had stopped saying so out loud.

Cassian stood. The hall hushed before he even raised his glass — that was the kind of Alpha he was, the kind whose silence pulled a room toward him.

"Family of Ironclaw," he said. His voice was warm. Steady. The voice I had once fallen asleep against. "You all know the burden my brother left behind. His mate. His pup. A boy whose body is failing him in ways our healer cannot name."

A low murmur. Sympathetic. Practiced.

"After long counsel," Cassian went on, "and with the blessing of the Moon Goddess, Luna Katherine and I have agreed to bring forth a blood-bonded sibling pup. A sibling's marrow, a sibling's blood — it may be the only thing that can pull Rowen back from this wasting. I do this to honor my brother. I do this for our pack."

The hall did not gasp. The hall approved. Glasses lifted. Someone — Delia Marsh, I noted, without turning my head — let out a soft, moved sound, the kind of sound that travels.

Inside my chest, the mate bond cracked.

It was not a metaphor. It was a sound my body heard — a sharp green snap, the way a young branch breaks when you bend it too far in the wrong direction. The pain bloomed up through my ribs into my throat. I did not move. I did not breathe out loud. Sable, my wolf, made a small sound somewhere very far inside me — not a howl. A whimper. The kind a pup makes when it doesn't yet understand what hurts.

I lifted my glass with the rest of them, because that was what Lunas did.

Across the hall, Katherine's eyes found mine. For one unguarded second, before she remembered to look down at Rowen's hair and stroke it the way she always stroked it for an audience, she let me see it.

Triumph. Bright and unbothered.

Then she looked away, and the moment was gone, and I sat in my chair beside my mate and drank to a child I would never bear and a bond that had just finished dying without anyone in this hall noticing but me.

---

He came to our room that night only to change his shirt.

"I need to speak with Katherine," he said, not looking at me. "About timing. The healer wants a window for the conception."

The word *conception* landed in the room like something dropped from a height.

"Of course," I said.

He paused at the door. For one second I thought he might turn. He didn't.

When the door closed, I sat on the edge of the bed in the dark and pressed my thumb against the inside of my left wrist — the soft place where, for five years, the mate-bond pulse had beat like a second heart. It was still there. Faintly. Skipping. The way a clock skips when the battery is failing.

I opened a careful, narrow mind-link to a contact I had been holding in reserve for six months without admitting to myself why — a Lycan Council mediator named Yves, recommended once at a Luna conference by a she-wolf who never explained how she knew his name.

*I need information,* I sent. *On formal mate rejection. The protocol. The wording. What protections exist for the pup of a rejected bond.*

The reply came faster than I expected. *Luna Collins. I'll send the documents tonight. Are you safe to receive them?*

I looked at the closed door.

*For now.*

A small sound at the doorway. I turned. Winter stood there in her white nightgown, one hand on the frame, her hair loose and tangled from sleep. She did not rub her eyes. She did not ask to be picked up. She looked at me the way she had been looking at me lately — too steady for five.

"Mommy," she said, "why does Daddy smell like he doesn't live here anymore?"

I opened my mouth. Closed it.

I held out my arm instead, and she crossed the rug and climbed up beside me, and I held my daughter in the dark and could not give her the answer she had earned.

---

The next morning I asked Cassian for a private meeting in his study. He gave me twenty minutes between pack business.

I laid it out the way I had been rehearsing for weeks. Quietly. In order.

"Rowen's symptoms don't match any wasting condition the healer has on file. I checked. His worst crises happen on the weeks you spend more time at home. Katherine's grief surges every time the pack starts to forget. I'm not asking you to believe me yet. I'm asking you to let an outside healer examine him. One I choose."

Cassian listened with his hands flat on the desk. His face did the thing it had started doing six months ago — the closing. A door easing shut behind his eyes while he pretended to still be in the room.

When I finished, he was quiet for a long moment. Then he used it.

The Alpha tone. Not loud. He never had to be loud.

"Ariana." The word pressed against my sternum like a palm. "You will stop. Poisoning. The healing of this pack. With your jealousy."

My knees locked under the desk. Sable went silent inside me — not gone, but dropped, the way an animal drops to its belly when something larger walks into the clearing.

She did not stir again for two days.

---

The pack moved around me like water after that.

Delia Marsh got to people before I did. I would walk into a kitchen and the conversation would already be over. I tried to speak with the pack healer about Rowen's records and was told he was unavailable, then later that he had been advised — gently, by Delia — that the Luna was *struggling* and might benefit from being given space.

I sat at the kitchen table that afternoon and found Winter there with her crayons.

She had drawn a small wolf. Cramped. Tight-shouldered. Around it she had pressed heavy black lines, layer over layer, hard enough that the wax had torn through the paper in two places.

"What's she doing?" I asked.

Winter did not look up.

"She's trying to get out," she said. "But the lines won't let her."

I did not cry. I sat down beside my daughter and took a brown crayon from the box and drew, very carefully, a small doorway in the heavy black wall.

Winter studied it for a long moment. Then she picked up her crayon and drew the wolf one step through.

One step. Not two.

That night, after I tucked her in, after I listened at the door until her breathing went soft and even, I went back to my room and pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist again, and opened the link to Yves a second time.

*Send everything,* I told him. *Including the wording.*
