Glasys grew up between two men who were never supposed to want her. Dave Stone, her stepbrother, her protector, the man who built her world and quietly controlled every corner of it. Gerald Hawthorne, Dave's best friend, self-made billionaire, the man who kept his distance for years not because he didn't want her but because Dave told him to. When Gladys joins Stone Enterprises everything she thought she understood about both men begins to unravel. Gerald stops pretending. Dave stops hiding. And Gladys discovers that the life she has been living was never entirely her own, her relationships managed, her career shaped, her choices made for her by hands she trusted completely. She is caught between the safety of everything she knows and a love that could destroy it all. One offers protection. The other offers truth. And she is done letting either of them decide.

Chapter 1 of Torn between my stepbrother and his bestfriend

"You're late."

Gladys didn't look up from her phone. "By four minutes, Dave."

"Four minutes in this building is"

"A lifetime, yes." She dropped her phone into her bag and looked at her stepbrother across the marble lobby of Stone Enterprises.

He was already in full CEO mode, dark suit, jaw set, the particular expression he wore when he had decided something and was waiting for the world to cooperate. "I know your speech. I've heard it since I was sixteen."

Dave's expression didn't shift. "This isn't the house, Gladys, different rules apply here"

"I'm aware." She adjusted the strap of her bag and met his eyes. "I work here now, I'll be on time tomorrow."

He studied her for a moment the way he always did like he was running a risk assessment and she was the variable he couldn't control. Then he nodded once and turned toward the elevator bank. "Come on. I'll introduce you to the floor."

She followed him and told herself this was fine, that having her stepbrother as her boss in a building his father built and his grandfather named was just a practical arrangement and not at all the specific kind of suffocation she had been trying to outrun for the better part of a decade.

The thirty-second floor was everything she expected, glass walls, clean lines, the aggressive minimalism of people who had so much money that simplicity became the flex.

Dave walked her through it with the efficiency of a man who had more important things to do and was doing this because he loved her, which she knew, which made it worse somehow.

Her office was at the end of the corridor. Small by Stone standards, which meant it was still larger than her last apartment, with a window that looked east over the city and a desk that was aggressively, pointedly clean.

"Your assistant starts Monday," Dave said from the doorway. "Her name is Priya. She knows the building better than anyone so use her."

"I will."

"The Calloway account brief is already on your system, Hartley wants a preliminary deck by Thursday."

"Dave." She turned from the window. "I've read the brief and I prepared for this, uou don't need to manage me through my first morning."

Something moved through his expression. "I'm not managing you. I'm briefing you."

"There's a difference?"

The silence lasted exactly one beat too long.

"Thursday," he said. "Hartley doesn't wait." He was gone before she could respond.

Gladys turned back to the window and exhaled slowly. Below her the city moved with total indifference to the fact that she had just started the most complicated job of her life. She found that comforting.

She found the coffee station on the twenty-eighth floor at eleven-fifteen because the one on thirty-second was out of oat milk and she had decided, on her very first day, that this was a hill she would die on.

She was reaching for a mug when she heard his voice.

"You found the good floor."

She turned.

Gerald Hawthorne was leaning in the doorway with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled, the expression of a man who was not remotely surprised to see her even though he had no reason to be here because this was not his building and Hawthorne Corp was twelve blocks north.

"Gerald." She kept her voice even. "What are you doing on the twenty-eighth floor of Stone Enterprises?"

"Board advisory meeting." He pushed off the doorway and moved to the coffee station with the unhurried ease that had always, "Dave didn't mention it?"

"Dave mentioned Hartley and Thursday and very little else."

The corner of his mouth lifted. "Sounds right." He reached past her for the coffee, he was close enough that she caught the particular scent of him, clean and warm and completely unfair and poured without asking if she minded the proximity.

"So." He turned and leaned against the counter and looked at her with those eyes, steady, dark, taking her apart with the patience of someone who had all the time in the world.

"First day."

"First day," she confirmed.

"How's it going?"

"Ask me after Thursday."

He almost smiled. "The Hartley deck."

"You know about it?"

"I know about most things that happen in this building." He said it simply, without weight, which somehow gave it more. "You'll be fine. Hartley responds to directness. Don't let him interrupt you mid-presentation, he does it to test whether you'll hold your ground. Hold your ground."

She looked at him. "Did Dave ask you to tell me that?"

"No."

"Then why"

"Because you're good at your job and you deserve to walk into that room with every advantage available." He held her gaze. "That's all."

The coffee station was very small. She was acutely aware of how little space existed between them and equally aware that he had engineered it with complete plausible deniability.

"You should probably get back to your meeting," she said.

"Probably." He didn't move.

"Gerald."

"I heard you." He pushed off the counter and reached for his jacket from the chair where he'd left it. "Good luck today, Gladys, not that you need it."

He was almost at the door when he stopped but didn't turn around.

"I'm glad you're here," he said quietly. Like a man who had been holding something for a long time and had decided, in this small room with bad lighting and adequate coffee, to put it down.

Then he walked out.

Gladys stood very still for a moment.

Then she poured her coffee, straightened her shoulders, and told herself that the thing currently happening in her chest was entirely manageable and almost certainly nothing.

She was back on the thirty-second floor at twelve-forty, head down over the Hartley brief, when Priya appeared in her doorway, and she introduced herself efficiently, asked three smart questions about Gladys's preferences, and left without wasting either of their time. Gladys decided immediately that she liked her.

At two-fifteen Dave appeared with a revised timeline that turned Thursday into Wednesday and watched her face while he delivered it.

She smiled. "Not a problem."

He nodded like he'd expected that and left.

At four-fifty-three, when the floor had mostly emptied and the city outside her window had gone gold and exhausted, Gladys's computer pinged with an internal message from an unfamiliar employee ID.

She opened it.

Hartley hates the color blue, don't put it in the deck.

There was no name, no signature, but she knew who sent it. She sat back in her chair and looked at the message for a long time.

Then she pulled up the Hartley deck, found the three blue graphs she had spent an hour perfecting, and started changing them slowly, with the particular feeling of a woman who is beginning to understand that someone has been paying attention to her life for much longer than she knew.

Her phone buzzed, it was Dave.

Dinner at seven, dron't be late.

She typed back: I won't.

She was still staring at the anonymous message when her office door opened without a knock.

It wasn't Dave.

It was Gerald, with his jacket back on, expression unreadable, holding an envelope that had her full name written on the front in handwriting she didn't recognize.

"This was left at the front desk," he said. "For you." He paused. "Gladys whoever sent it asked security not to log it."

He held it out, she stretched her hand and took it.

The moment her fingers touched the envelope she felt something stiff inside, a photograph.

She opened it.

And every assumption she had made about her life at Stone Enterprises turned to dust in her hands.

Rejected by Fated Mate
The scent of antiseptic and herbs filled the air as I guided my mother's wheelchair into Lilith's treatment room. Hope fluttered in my chest—maybe this new healer could ease the chronic pain that had plagued my mother since the accident that left her paralyzed. "Thank you for coming," Lilith said, her voice dripping with false sweetness as she gestured toward the examination table. "I've been studying your mother's case. I believe my traditional methods might help where others have failed." My mother smiled weakly, her once-vibrant face now hollow with pain. "Anything that might help, dear. The pack doctor said there's little they can do." "I need to fetch some water," Lilith said, turning to me. "Would you mind? It's just down the hall." "Of course," I replied, squeezing my mother's hand before leaving them alone. The hallway seemed longer than usual.
