Chapter 1 of Too Late To Stop Her Revenge

Elenor Moran stood alone on the second-floor gallery, a champagne flute held loosely in her hand. Below, the National Portrait Gallery's atrium buzzed with the manufactured warmth of Washington, D.C.'s elite.

Her husband, Giles Barron—the heir to one of Washington's most powerful political dynasties and CEO of the Barron family's defense-contracting empire—had arrived with socialite and philanthropist Evelin Sargent on his arm. Not with Elenor, the wife whose name was printed beside his on the invitation.

Behind Elenor, two women whispered.

"Poor Elenor. She's barely out of the hospital, and Giles still brought Evelin as his date."

"His heart was never with his wife. Everyone knows it."

This was Elenor's first public appearance since the crash.

When she woke in the hospital, she remembered another life in full—one in which the same crash, caused by deliberately sabotaged brakes, had killed her.

In her previous life, she had loved Giles Barron with a devotion that bordered on madness. She had clung to their marriage at any cost, sacrificing her pride, her family, and eventually her life in the desperate hope that he might one day love her back. Instead, she had been branded vicious and jealous, condemned by the entire country, and left to watch her family fall apart before she died in disgrace.

This time, the trauma had awakened something ruthless inside her. She possessed the foresight of a woman who had already lived through every betrayal awaiting her, and the clarity to act before her enemies realized she had changed.

In her first life, Elenor had destroyed herself trying to keep Giles. In this one, she would use everything she remembered to tear herself free.

Since waking, her mind no longer drowned beneath grief or jealousy. It separated every sound, gesture, and whispered remark into useful information—the clink of ice in a congressman's glass, the rustle of a silk gown, the sudden silence when a secret was mentioned. The crash had left her body bruised, but her rebirth had given her something far more dangerous: precision.

Her gaze landed on Giles Barron. He was the gravitational center of the room, effortlessly charming a senator while Evelin Sargent stood gracefully by his side.

Evelin, dressed in a virginal white gown, adjusted his tie. The gesture was intimate, proprietary. As if she were the hostess.

The evening's climax arrived: the charity auction. Giles was invited to the stage to present the final item.

He opened a velvet box. Inside lay the "Morning Star," a diamond necklace that glittered under the spotlights.

Elenor's fingers brushed against her own bare neck. She remembered that necklace. Giles had promised it to her for their third anniversary.

Giles's eyes scanned the crowd, a practiced smile on his face. The smile faltered, then softened into something genuine, something Elenor had never received. It was aimed at Evelin.

He didn't hand the box to the auctioneer. Instead, he descended the stage and walked directly to her.

"Evelin," he said, his voice a low murmur that the microphones conveniently picked up. "To thank you for your contributions to the foundation, I'm bidding on this personally. For you."

The room erupted. First came a collective gasp, then a wave of applause and whistles. It was the most public declaration of preference, the most exquisite humiliation for his wife.

Evelin's eyes welled up, her expression a perfect portrait of surprised, humble joy. "Giles, it's too much... I couldn't possibly..."

"You can," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. He took the necklace and fastened it around her neck. His fingers lingered on her skin, a touch full of possession and tenderness.

From the shadows of the second floor, Elenor watched. An outsider at her own execution. She could see the cold light glinting off the Patek Philippe on his wrist as he adjusted the clasp.

A memory flashed—her, in her past life, screaming at him about this very necklace. He had called her materialistic and irrational. Now, he was giving it to another woman.

A wave of nausea rose in her throat. Not jealousy. It was purely physical revulsion.

She turned, walked to a large decorative planter, and dropped the champagne flute into the soil. The glass, the champagne, all of it.

The soft thud was swallowed by the applause below.

She didn't look back at the perfect couple. Her heels clicked against the marble floor, a sharp, final sound.

A waiter moved to intercept her. "Mrs. Barron? The evening isn't over. Where are you going?"

Elenor didn't slow down. Her voice was ice. "Somewhere Giles Barron isn't."

The waiter froze, stunned by the cold fury radiating from her.

Down below, Giles seemed to sense something. He glanced up toward the second floor, his brow furrowing. He saw only the last flicker of her retreating form disappearing down the corridor.

Evelin noticed his distraction and tightened her grip on his arm. "Giles, thank you," she whispered, her voice trembling delicately. "It's the most beautiful gift I've ever received."

His attention snapped back to her.

Outside, the cool night air hit Elenor's face. It felt like the first clean breath she had taken in years.

She pulled out her phone. The first contact was "Giles." She pressed down on the name, her thumb hovering over the option.

Delete Contact.

She didn't hesitate.

Then she sent a text to her personal assistant, Clara Hayes. "Clara, find me the best divorce lawyer in D.C. I want to meet him tomorrow at nine a.m."

The necklace on Evelin's throat no longer mattered. In her previous life, Elenor had wasted years fighting to keep Giles while the people around him destroyed her reputation, ruined her family, and finally arranged the crash that killed her.

This time, she would leave before the Barrons could trap her again. She would protect her family from every scheme she remembered, uncover who had sabotaged her brakes, and make each person responsible pay for what they had done.

Giles had always believed Elenor was powerless without his name. He was about to discover how much of his reputation, his influence, and his carefully protected life she could take from him once she stopped loving him.

But first, divorce. Complete, absolute, and final. An erasure of the Barron name from her life.
