Too Late For Regret: The Ex-Wife's Escape is a modern romance novel where Eloise Knight, framed for murder by her billionaire husband, vanishes into New York's underworld to clear her name.

Too Late For Regret: The Ex-Wife's Escape Summary

After three years in prison for a murder she didn't commit, Eloise Knight walks out to find her billionaire husband, Carter James, waiting—not to welcome her, but to see if prison broke her. He condemned her in court, presenting the vintage letter opener—a gift from her late father—as the murder weapon. When she turns her back on his car, Carter freezes every account, determined to leave her starving on New York's streets. But Eloise is no longer the naive Mrs. James. She remembers her murdered best friend boasting about stealing Carter's heart, and realizes she was framed by the two people she trusted most. She signs the divorce papers and vanishes, disguised as a mute cleaner at the exclusive Elysian Club, stepping into his playground to find the truth and clear her name.

Chapter 1 of Too Late For Regret: The Ex-Wife's Escape

The heavy iron gate slammed shut behind her. The sound was a deafening clang of finality, echoing the end of three years, one month, and sixteen days.

Eloise Knight stood alone, dressed in a washed-out gray tracksuit issued by the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. It was her only possession.

She lifted her head to the lead-gray sky, taking a deep breath of free, cold air. It was sharp with the exhaust fumes from the nearby highway, a smell so real it made her head spin.

Her fingers instinctively went to the inside of her right wrist, tracing a faint, pale scar. It was a permanent reminder of the despair that had tried to swallow her whole, a silent alarm for every day she had survived.

A gruff, older corrections officer gave her a light pat on the shoulder. "Knight, walk forward. Don't look back."

Eloise nodded, her throat too tight to form words. The desire to speak to anyone had withered away long ago.

Her gaze drifted across the parking lot and locked onto a black Bentley parked under a barren tree. The license plate was a number she knew by heart, a number once tied to her own identity.

The window lowered halfway, revealing the sharp profile of Carter James. He wore his gold-rimmed glasses, his head bowed over a document as if picking up his ex-wife, a convicted murderer, was just another minor item on his busy schedule.

Seeing that face, Eloise's heart felt nothing. A dead, stagnant pool. The man who had stood in a courtroom three years ago, her husband, and submitted the very evidence that condemned her—he had killed her heart then.

In the driver's seat, Gary White, Carter's longtime driver, noticed her and shifted, as if to get out.

Carter didn't look up. "Let her walk over," he said, his voice cold.

Gary froze.

Carter believed three years in prison should have been enough to sand down her edges, to teach her the meaning of obedience. He was here today to confirm it.

Eloise stood still, her eyes fixed on the car for a long, silent ten seconds. Her expression was blank, as if she were looking at a heap of lifeless steel.

Then, she did something neither man in the car expected.

She turned her back on the Bentley and started walking in the exact opposite direction.

Carter finally looked up from his papers, his brow furrowing in irritation at this unexpected defiance. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, a familiar tell of his displeasure.

He pulled out his phone and dialed her number. The call was immediately dropped. He dialed again. Rejected.

"Sir?" Gary asked cautiously, seeing his boss's darkening expression in the rearview mirror.

Carter didn't answer. His eyes were locked on Eloise's retreating back. That slender but straight spine projected a distance, a finality he had never seen in her before.

A battered yellow taxi pulled over to the curb, looking for a fare.

Eloise opened the door without a second's hesitation and slid inside. She never once looked back at the six-figure car.

The taxi driver, a heavy-set man, glanced at her worn clothes, then at the luxury car in the distance, his eyes full of questions.

"To Manhattan," Eloise said, her voice raspy from disuse. She pushed a few crumpled bills, her meager prison earnings, toward him. "Any subway station will do."

The taxi sputtered to life, belching a cloud of black smoke as it merged into traffic.

Inside the Bentley, the air was frigid. The document in Carter's hand was now crumpled from his grip.

He had never imagined she would dare to defy him like this. Not with tears or arguments, but with complete, devastating indifference.

In the back of the taxi, Eloise leaned her head against the cold glass, watching the world rush by. She had finally escaped one hell, only to face an unknown future. She closed her eyes. A single tear slid silently down her cheek, but the corner of her mouth curved into a bitter, relieved smile.

She pulled out an old, non-smart phone—the only thing her sister had managed to sneak to her. The screen lit up with one unread message: "Sis, I rented a temporary place for you in Greenwich Village. The address is..."

Carter's phone vibrated. A message from his grandmother, Eleanor. "Have you picked up Eloise? Bring her home, and don't you dare bully her."

He yanked at his tie, a flicker of something dark in his eyes. The "welcome" he had planned had turned into a humiliating one-man show.

"Follow that taxi," he commanded Gary, his voice leaving no room for argument.

In the taxi, Eloise deleted her sister's message. Then she popped the SIM card from its slot, snapped it in half without a second thought, and tossed the pieces out the window. She trusted no one, especially not anyone connected to her old life.

She gave the driver a new address, one she'd spotted on a map just moments ago—the name of a cheap, 24-hour day spa in Brooklyn.

She needed a place to wash away the filth of the last three years.
