While rushing the old man to the ER during a heart attack, she finds her husband in a VIP ward, tenderly holding Hayleigh. His grandfather rages, beats him, and collapses from cardiac arrest. Chapter 1 of The Unwanted Wife's Fatal Secret Diagnosis

Elena Norman's fingers were white against the steering wheel of her Aston Martin.

The leather felt slick and cold under her grip.

Outside, the New York skyline blurred into a distorted mess of light and steel. A smear of color against the gray afternoon.

Her hand trembled as it brushed against the Hermès Birkin bag on the passenger seat. Inside, a single folded paper felt like a block of ice.

Renal Cell Carcinoma.

The words burned in her mind, a brand seared into her thoughts.

She took a sharp, ragged breath and forced herself to turn the key. The engine purred to life, a low thrum that vibrated through her bones.

Home. She had to go home.

She had to act like nothing was wrong.

The car merged smoothly into the Fifth Avenue traffic. In the rearview mirror, her face was a pale, haunted mask. She tried to smile. The result was a grotesque twist of her lips, something more painful than a sob.

As she crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, her phone buzzed. Dedric. Her brother.

She swiped to answer, her voice miraculously light and airy.

"Hey, Dedric. What's up?"

"Just checking in, El. You sound happy."

"I'm just doing a little shopping," she lied, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. "Got you something nice."

"You spoil me. See you tonight?"

"Of course."

She hung up.

The mask of strength crumbled. Tears slid silently down her cheeks, hot trails on her cold skin. She didn't make a sound.

A quick, angry swipe of her hand erased the tears. The gates to their Long Island estate were just ahead.

Arthur Finch, the butler, opened her car door with his usual respectful but distant expression. He had worked for the Sharpes for thirty years and had never once looked her directly in the eye.

She walked into the grand foyer. The enormous crystal chandelier overhead cast a cold, sterile light across the marble floors. The house was always silent, a beautiful, empty museum.

Jonathon Sharpe was sitting on the sofa in the living room.

His Armani suit was perfectly tailored, his posture immaculate as he read through a document. He didn't look up when she entered.

He only acknowledged her presence when she was a few feet away. He raised his head, and his deep gray eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, met hers. They held no warmth.

She opened her mouth, the familiar words "I'm home" ready on her tongue.

He cut her off.

With a flick of his wrist, he sent a manila folder sliding across the marble coffee table. It stopped just inches from her, the sound sharp and grating in the silence.

A cold dread, heavy and suffocating, settled in her stomach.

"Sign it," Jonathon said, his voice flat. Devoid of any emotion. "The terms of our prenup are clear. You'll get everything you're entitled to."

Her gaze froze on the folder.

She knew what it was.

Divorce papers.

The blood in her veins turned to ice. Her mind went blank, a roaring static filling her ears. The doctor's words echoed in the sudden void, colliding with Jonathon's cold command.

The sheer, crushing absurdity of it all threatened to buckle her knees.

He saw her hesitation. He loosened his tie, a familiar, impatient gesture. It was the only sign of emotion he ever showed. Annoyance.

"Hayleigh is back," he added, as if that explained everything. "I made her a promise."

Hayleigh Gamble.

The name was a physical blow, stealing the air from her lungs. A bitter, metallic taste filled her throat.

Elena forced herself to look up at him. She even managed a small, polite smile. It was the smile she wore at charity galas, at board meetings, the one that said nothing and concealed everything.

She used the last of her strength to keep her voice steady.

"Alright," she said, the word a tiny, fragile thing in the vast room. "Congratulations to you."

A flicker of surprise crossed his face. He had expected tears, perhaps. A scene. Her composure seemed to unsettle him.

She needed to leave. To walk away with the last shred of her dignity intact.

She turned.

But the shock, the diagnosis, the divorce-it was too much. Her body betrayed her. Her grip on the Birkin bag loosened, and it slipped from her numb fingers.

The bag hit the marble floor with a dull thud.

Its contents spilled across the polished surface. A lipstick rolled under the table. Her car keys skittered near his polished Italian shoes. Her phone lay face down.

And there, half-slid from its envelope, was a folded piece of paper.

The hospital's logo and the words "Diagnostic Report" were starkly visible against the white.
