The Unloved Son Who Built an Empire Summary

Working a grueling summer job, I tolerated eating cold, meatless scraps every night, believing it was just my family's clumsy way of showing love. But the illusion shatters on my day off. When my mother slaps my chopsticks away from the fresh braised pork to save it for my brother, the painful truth is laid bare: I am only worth their leftovers. With my father and sister defending this cruel double standard, I realize I must escape. Fortunately, my ticket out is already booked—a college a thousand miles away.

Chapter 1 of The Unloved Son Who Built an Empire

Once I started my summer job, I realized the food my family left for me always looked like slop.

Some nights the four plates couldn't yield a single piece of meat, so I'd eat cold rice soaked in leftover sauce, wash the dishes, and lie awake at midnight with my stomach cramping.

I finally worked up the nerve to ask my mother, "Could you stop saving food for me? It's easier if I just get delivery. Otherwise I'm exhausted all day and still have to do the dishes."

She agreed easily enough, but the next day she set aside food for me exactly as before.

I shook my head and let it go, telling myself it was just the sweet burden of a family that cared.

Then came a rare day off, and I ate dinner at home. My mother made the usual, four dishes and a soup.

I reached my chopsticks toward the braised pork, and she knocked them away.

When I looked at her, confused, she pulled out a few pretty little dishes. "Your brother's getting home late. We have to set some food aside for him."

The words stuck in my throat. "Isn't it always leftovers you save for me?"

My sister shot me an irritated look. "Leftovers are leftovers. Setting food aside is not the same thing."

My father nodded in agreement, and the sentence I'd been carrying, that mine had always been leftovers, lodged in my throat, impossible to swallow, impossible to spit out.

I didn't argue. I didn't make a scene. In that moment I was only grateful I hadn't listened to my family and stayed for a local commuter college. I'd chosen Shoreport instead, a thousand miles away.

...

The second Adam Wiley walked in, our mother lifted a plate of still-warm food straight from the pot.

In under a minute he was eating a hot meal.

Tessa Wiley stood beside the table watching him wolf it down, and the fondness in her eyes was almost a thing you could touch.

"Slow down, no one's going to fight you for it. You were out with your friends, why didn't you eat something first?"

Adam tipped his head back, with the easy confidence that only comes from being adored. "Mom always saves food for me. If I ate somewhere else, wouldn't I be throwing all her trouble back in her face?"

Our mother's look was mock-scolding, but her voice went especially soft. "You just know how to make me happy."

Our father was watching TV, his eyes not on the table at all, yet at that warm little exchange he couldn't help the smile tugging at his mouth.

And I stood off to the side, like a man made of glass, unable to enter it, with no room to say a word.

I watched the four of them, our family of four, the way you'd watch a cozy little sitcom.

If I weren't one of them, that picture of a happy household might actually have moved me.

Adam frowned halfway through eating. "Mom, how come there's no soup today?"

Four dishes and a soup was the tradition in our house. Two dishes for Tessa's taste, two for our parents'.

Adam liked every dish fine, but the table had to have soup every day, or he wouldn't feel right about the meal.

Our mother slapped her forehead like she'd just remembered, and carried a bowl of soup out of the kitchen.

It had been ladled out separately. It wasn't the dregs of soup I usually came home to.

Corn, carrot, and pork rib soup, all three ingredients accounted for, the ribs deliberately chosen from the meaty center cuts.

The ribs were piled up like a little mountain.

Not like the nights when I had to sip to guess what soup we were even having.

My fingers were clenched white. For the first time in my life I understood what it meant to save food for someone.

Not scraps and cold leftovers, a pile of bowls and chopsticks left for whoever ate last to wash.

It wasn't that I was unfavored. I was unloved.

When that thought arrived, it didn't come as some sudden revelation. It came with a bleakness I could no longer lie my way around.

I could barely breathe, my chest heaving hard, over and over, and I nearly cried.

But to protect what little dignity I had left, I forced it back down.

I couldn't keep watching them like that, torturing myself. I struggled to my feet and started dragging myself toward my room.

And that was when my mother called me back.
