Chapter 1 of The Opened Box That Shattered My Seven-Year Marriage

My hands were shaking when I found the box of condoms in Cole Fox's bag.

Seven years of marriage. Three of those spent sleeping in separate rooms.

My mother-in-law said I was being paranoid. Laurel Fox rolled her eyes. "My brother works overtime every single day. When would he even have time to cheat? Are you okay?"

Cole stood off to the side and said nothing.

I didn't make a scene.

That night I packed my bags. The next morning I slapped the divorce papers down on his desk.

He stared. "Over a box of condoms? I told you, a coworker left them in my car."

"Sure." I nodded. "Then have that coworker come explain it to me."

He went quiet.

The whole family took turns telling me to stop overreacting.

My own mother called. "He doesn't hit you, doesn't curse at you, hands over his whole paycheck. What more do you want?"

What more did I want?

All I knew was that it had suddenly come back to me—our wedding night, Cole drunk, his arms around me, calling out someone else's name.

I'd pretended I didn't hear it.

I'd been pretending for seven years.

...

I'd taken a photo of the box and saved it on my phone.

A three-pack. One torn open. Two left.

I hadn't used any.

Cole hadn't had the chance to, either.

Not because I was unwilling. He always had a reason.

Too tired from work. Drank too much at a client dinner. Early morning tomorrow.

Eventually he stopped bothering with reasons altogether. He'd shower, walk into the spare bedroom, and shut the door.

Before I fell asleep, I could hear short videos playing through the wall. Sometimes the same clip looping over and over. Sometimes his voice, low and muffled, leaving voice messages to someone.

I never asked who he was talking to.

Asking would make it look like I cared.

My mother-in-law came to talk sense into me while I was clearing out his closet.

She sat on the edge of the bed and watched me fold his winter sweaters one by one, her mouth never stopping. "Honestly, what is wrong with you? You've got a perfectly good life and you insist on blowing it up. You know how Cole is. If he were really up to something, do you think he'd be careless enough to let you find it?"

I said nothing.

She went on. "I asked him myself. He said it belonged to a coworker. The guy rode in his car and left it behind. Men—you get one explanation and you move on. You keep picking at it like this, can you blame him for getting fed up?"

I placed the sweater into the storage bin and looked up at her.

"Mom, what coworker leaves a box of condoms in someone else's car?"

She faltered. Something shifted behind her expression. She stood up and walked out.

At the doorway she tossed back one last line: "You're determined to think the worst. I'm done wasting my breath."

Laurel was more direct.

She fired off a wall of text in the family group chat. I didn't read all of it—just caught the last few lines: "...You're out of line. If my brother actually had someone on the side, he would've divorced you a long time ago. You think you're that special?"

I left the group.

Cole came home late that night. Past eleven. I was sitting in the living room, the TV on with the volume off.

He saw me when he was changing his shoes. He paused for a second, said nothing, and headed straight for the spare bedroom.

"Cole."

He stopped. Didn't turn around.

"The condoms. Whose are they?"

A few seconds of silence. Then he turned, wearing the same expression I'd looked at for seven years—mild, seamless, perfectly composed.

"I told you, they're my coworker's. Last name's Parker. You've met him. He sat next to me at the company dinner."

I looked at him.

He looked back, gaze open and steady.

So steady I almost believed him.

"Then have him tell me that himself," I said. "Right now. Call him."

His brow creased. That thin veneer of mildness finally cracked.

"What is wrong with you?"

I didn't respond.

He kept going. "I explained it and you still don't believe me. You really have to make it into this whole thing? It's a box of condoms. It's not like I actually did anything. Is this really worth all this?"
