Chapter 1 of The Mafia Don’s Sons Knelt Before Me

The betrayal did not start tonight.

It began six years ago, when they were only three — small, fragile, feverish inside a hospital room. I wasn’t permitted entry. Only Adrian.

So I haunted the hallway like a phantom, staring through glass at two little boys who bore pieces of me I thought I had buried forever.

A nurse whispered as she passed, barely audible: “Strange… they don’t look like Vivienne. They resemble her more.”

Something inside me cracked open. I called in a favor I couldn’t afford, paid with currency I didn’t have. And when the DNA test came back, my trembling hands nearly dropped the page.

99.99% certainty.

A truth I felt in every fiber of my being: Liam and Cole were mine. My boys.

That same night, I stormed into Adrian’s office like a hurricane clawing at its cage.

“They’re mine,” I gasped, shoving the papers forward like a dagger. “Liam and Cole — they belong to me!”

Adrian didn’t flinch. He didn’t even look at me. He swirled the amber liquid in his glass, studying it lazily, as though I were nothing more than an irritating insect.

Finally, he lifted his eyes, lips curling into a mocking smile. “Yes. They’re yours. But does it matter?”

My fists tightened until my nails cut skin. “It matters to me! They’re not Vivienne’s — they’re mine! You stole them and let the world—”

His laugh sliced the air. A hollow, humorless sound.

“Let the world believe whatever story it prefers. Vivienne gave them a tragedy people wanted. A flawless lie.”

He leaned back, sipping slow, savoring his power.

“Stop digging up the dead, cara mia. You’re their mother now. You lived here. You lived with me. I took you back. Isn’t this what you wanted?” His gaze gleamed with cruelty. “Aren’t you… satisfied?”

Satisfied.

The word hit harder than any blow.

I stood there shaking, anger and grief tangled, realizing the truth would never release me. And so I stayed. For Liam. For Cole. Even when they turned colder, crueler. Even when they whispered venom that I was the reason their so-called “real mother” lay dead.

At first, it was petty. Sneers. Mocking laughter. Liam hiding my shoes. Cole shredding my books. But with each passing year, their malice sharpened, grew darker.

I should have left long ago. Eleven whole years — eleven relentless, soul-crushing years — I spent raising Liam and Cole, the twin sons of Adrian Lucci, the ruthless mafia kingpin who once swore he would give me everything.

I was supposed to stand at his side. I was supposed to be crowned the Queen of the Lucci empire. But in our world, dreams are fragile illusions that shatter easily. Especially after the accident that shattered my body. Especially after Vivienne — Adrian’s flawless, conniving mistress — ensured I would never walk down that aisle.

As I lay mangled, unconscious, and stitched together on a hospital bed, Adrian pledged himself to her instead. Vivienne — my sister-in-law. Yes, the widow of my own brother.

People said Vivienne was barren. After countless miscarriages and endless nights of whispered prayers that withered away, she could never bring life into the world.

But suddenly, as if heaven had changed its mind, people murmured about miracles. Seven months after my crash, right on schedule, Vivienne began to glow. Her belly swelled, her skin flushed with supposed radiance, and extravagant baby showers followed.

And when she “delivered” two strong, beautiful baby boys, everyone celebrated. Adrian stood at her side like a victorious king, parading the supposed heirs of the Lucci name — the miracle children their dynasty had been desperate to produce.

But it was no miracle.

It was robbery.

The night Vivienne arranged that crash, I had been seven months pregnant. Those babies — Liam and Cole — were mine.

While I was trapped in a coma, my sons were stolen. Cut from me with surgical steel and lies. Smuggled into discreet clinics. Hospital files falsified. Voices bought into silence with blood-stained cash.

Vivienne never carried them.

She simply wore the deception like a glittering crown.

And then, just as abruptly as she entered, she was gone. Vivienne died within two years, another car crash — swift, clean, almost too convenient.

No remains to mourn. A closed coffin. Adrian shed no real tears. He simply spun another tale — the grieving widower left to raise two innocent sons.

When I finally awoke, scarred and hollow, robbed of my womb, Adrian stood above me. Blood on his conscience. A debt in his eyes.

“Raise them,” he ordered coldly. “Raise them as if they were yours.”

Because they were mine.

I kissed their scraped knees. I taught them how to aim, how to whisper prayers, how to hide the truth behind polished smiles and bloodied hands. I raised Liam and Cole inside the very mansion built by the men who had torn my existence apart.

And how did they repay me? With the same hands I trained, they cut out my heart piece by piece.

---

Their thirteenth birthday.

I clutched a velvet box to my chest as I entered the grand Lucci dining hall, where predators dressed as men drank and roared beneath chandeliers dripping with gold. At the head of the table lounged Adrian, swirling whiskey as though it were an extension of himself.

The twins sat together, dressed sharply in silk, already deadlier than half the soldiers in that room.

I cleared my throat.

No one faltered in their conversations. No one acknowledged me. Still, I forced myself forward, each step punctuated by the pounding of my heart.

“Liam. Cole,” I said softly once I reached them, voice unsteady. “I… I made something for you. For your birthday.”

Slowly, their heads turned. Two pairs of dark, soulless eyes pinned me. I lowered myself, offering the small box with hands that wouldn’t stop shaking.

“I know…” my voice cracked. “I know I’ll never be the mother you wish I were. But I love you. I always have. From the very beginning.”

Liam’s mouth curled into a sneer.

Cole’s lips twisted with scorn.

“Oh really?” Liam said loudly, mockery dripping from each syllable. “You love us? Even after you murdered her?”

My heart plummeted.

“I didn’t—” I began, but Cole sliced through my words.

“You think some glittery trinket can erase what you did? That you can buy your way out of being a rat?”

He tore the box open, pulling free the gold pocket watch. For a moment, the engraved initials seemed to still him. But the pause shattered quickly.

“This?” Liam barked, grabbing the watch and waving it high. “This is worthless.”

Before I could react, he hurled it toward the roaring fireplace. The watch smashed into the flames, metal melting with a vicious hiss.

The room erupted in laughter.
