Chapter 1 of The Life We Shaped

"Professor, this is Model 001, the android we built as per your request. In just two weeks, she will be ready to replace you in your marriage. We've programmed her to simulate cancer and 'pass away' within a year. All the paperwork—new identity, everything—is taken care of. You can leave in two weeks, no problem."

Sunlight streamed through the glass walls of the Oakmont Robotics Institute, casting a sharp gleam on the smooth white floors. The space felt both futuristic and sterile, with monitors displaying rows of data blinking in synchronized patterns. A faint hum from the machines filled the air, like a mechanical heartbeat. Laura stood motionless in the center of it all, her figure reflected faintly on the pristine surfaces surrounding her.

Before her was the humanoid robot—Model 001—a creation with a 99.9% resemblance to herself. Its eyes, an exact replication of her own, stared back at her with a blank, unsettling emptiness.

Harry, the lab assistant, adjusted his glasses, the fluorescent lighting reflecting off the thick lenses. His voice carried a tone of pride as he continued reporting.

"Thanks to the support from headquarters in Glenwood, we've finally overcome the major challenge of creating synthetic skin for her," he said, his words clipped and efficient.

Laura's gaze remained fixed on the android, her hand trembling slightly as she reached out. The android's cheek felt warm under her touch, eerily lifelike, the smooth texture indistinguishable from human skin.

"Isn't she something? You'll need to interact with her though. That's how she learns your speech and movements. With accelerated training, she'll be indistinguishable from you in about two weeks." Harry flipped through his tablet, the screen briefly illuminating his face as he scrolled through the android's specs.

Laura's lips parted as if to say something, but she only nodded silently, her expression unreadable. The weight of her decision pressed heavily on her chest, but there was no turning back.

Inside the lab, the hours stretched endlessly as Laura trained the android. She spoke, gestured, and moved with deliberate precision, knowing every detail was being recorded and replicated. Occasionally, she caught Harry observing her with an analytical gaze, as though she were as much of a subject as the robot itself.

By the time Laura stepped out of the lab, night had fallen. The cityscape beyond the institute shimmered with countless lights, casting long shadows across the deserted streets. Her heels echoed against the pavement as she walked to the parking lot, the cold air biting against her skin.

Her phone buzzed incessantly, the glow of the screen cutting through the darkness. She glanced at it and saw a series of WhatsApp notifications. Hector had just posted their wedding photos from a pre-wedding shoot on his Instagram feed.

In the images, Hector looked effortlessly handsome in a tailored navy suit, his hand resting lightly on Laura's waist. His gaze was fixed on Laura, his eyes filled with what appeared to be boundless affection. Laura, wearing a flowing white dress, smiled brightly, her face tilted toward Hector's as if the world ceased to exist beyond them.

Hector's caption read: [Forever and always, my love.]

Comments flooded in:

[You two are perfect together!]

[Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness.]

Laura's thumb hovered over the like button but instead, she closed the app. Her downcast eyes betrayed a flicker of self-mockery, her lips curving into a faint, bitter smile. Once, she might have cherished such declarations of love, clinging to Hector's grand promises as though they were lifelines. But now, those words felt hollow, their sincerity worn thin over time.

In the quiet solitude of the parking lot, memories surfaced unbidden.

At school, everyone had marveled at how perfect she and Hector seemed. He was her childhood friend, her protector, and later, her boyfriend. As the years passed, people grew to believe their bond was unbreakable.

Laura thought back to her childhood—the mockery from her peers for her buzz-cut hair and boyish demeanor. Groups of children would chant rhymes about her, throwing stones and laughing as she flinched away. Hector had always been there, watching from a distance before stepping in.

One vivid memory clawed its way to the forefront of her mind. It was the year she'd gained weight during middle school. She'd been cornered in the girls' bathroom by a group of classmates, their jeers cutting into her like knives. They had locked the door and left her crying on the cold, tiled floor.

Hector had found her hours later, his face pale with worry. He'd thrown open the door, panting as though he'd searched the entire school. Without a word, he'd crouched beside her and pulled her into a tight embrace.

"You're not alone," he'd whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. "Never."

Those moments had cemented her faith in him. Even after high school, Hector had been her rock, helping her prepare for graduate school. He'd spent a full year alongside her, making sure she ate, slept, and studied enough to succeed.

But now, the foundation of that faith was crumbling. For five years, Hector had been involved with Olivia Reynolds, a new lecturer in their department. The irony wasn't lost on Laura. The man who had once promised her the world was now the very reason she was standing at the precipice of abandoning it entirely.

As the night deepened, Laura glanced at the android's progress logs on her phone. It was an unsettling feeling, knowing that in just two weeks, this replica would take her place, weaving a story of love, sickness, and eventual death.

And Hector? He would never know.

Slowly, Then Forever is a short drama on DramaWave built around a deceptively simple premise: two people who are genuinely bad at being loved.
