Trying to escape her scandalous past, Juliette Monroe takes a job in Manhattan, only to walk straight into the jaws of Damien Cross—the obsessive, dangerous billionaire who once shattered her heart. Forced into a strict contract and trapped in his luxury penthouse, Juliette must survive his toxic game. Damien doesn't share, and this time, he has no intention of letting her go.

Chapter 1 of The Billionaire’s Obsession

Juliette Monroe had never been this high up in her life—literally or metaphorically.

The elevator glided to a stop on the top floor of Vale Tower, its walls lined with brushed steel and silence. She stepped into a private gallery that smelled faintly of cedarwood and secrets. The city sprawled beneath her through floor-to-ceiling windows, glittering like a thousand promises she didn't believe in.

She clutched her portfolio tighter, fingers trembling just enough to betray her nerves. This wasn't just another art curation gig. This was his gallery.

Damien Cross. Billionaire. Recluse. The man who bought silence and sold beauty.

Juliette had only seen him once—on the cover of a magazine she couldn't afford. Sharp jawline. Eyes like winter. A man carved from restraint. And now she was standing in his world, surrounded by pieces worth more than her entire life.

"Miss Monroe," a voice said behind her, smooth as velvet and twice as dangerous.

She turned.

He was taller than she expected. Dressed in a black suit that looked like it had been stitched by shadows. His gaze met hers, unreadable, and held it just long enough to make her forget how to breathe.

"I trust the view meets your standards," he said.

Juliette swallowed. "It's... intimidating."

He smiled, barely. "Good. Intimidation is honest. Beauty rarely is."

She didn't know what to say to that, so she said nothing. He walked past her, slow and deliberate, stopping in front of a painting she hadn't noticed before—a woman in red, faceless, standing in the rain.

"I want this gallery to feel like memory," he said. "Not art. Not decoration. Memory."

Juliette stepped closer, her voice steadier now. "Whose memory?"

He turned to her, and for the first time, something flickered in his eyes. Not warmth. Not cruelty. Something older.

"Mine," he said. "And maybe yours."

She felt the air shift between them—charged, electric. He was watching her too closely now, as if trying to decide what kind of woman she was. Not professionally. Personally.

"You curate emotion," he said. "That's rare. Most curators arrange things. You... disturb them."

Juliette's breath caught. She hadn't expected him to see her like that. Not so quickly. Not so clearly.

"I disturb things because they deserve to be felt," she said.

Damien stepped closer. Not enough to touch, but enough to make her skin hum.

"Good," he murmured. "I want to be disturbed."

The silence that followed was not empty. It was full—of tension, of curiosity, of something neither of them had named yet.

He turned away, walking toward a glass case at the far end of the room. Inside was a sculpture—twisted metal, raw and unfinished, like a scream frozen mid-air.

"I bought this the day my father died," he said. "It's ugly. But it's honest."

Juliette approached slowly, her heels echoing against the marble floor.

"Why show me this?" she asked.

"Because I want you to understand something," he said, facing her again. "This gallery isn't about perfection. It's about control. And what happens when you lose it."

She met his gaze, steady now. "And have you lost it?"

Damien's lips curved—not a smile, but something darker.

"I'm trying to," he said. "That's why I hired you."

Juliette felt her pulse quicken. This wasn't a job. It was an invitation. And somewhere deep inside, she knew—this man didn't collect art. He collected moments. People. Power.

And now, he was collecting her.

Juliette didn't move. She couldn't. His words hung in the air like smoke—I'm trying to lose control. And somehow, she knew he wasn't talking about art anymore.

Damien's eyes lingered on her face, searching for something. A reaction. A weakness. A mirror.

"You're not afraid of me," he said, almost surprised.

"I don't know you," she replied. "Yet."

He stepped closer, and this time, the distance between them vanished. She could smell him—sandalwood, expensive whiskey, and something darker. Something male.

"You will," he said softly.

Juliette's heart thudded against her ribs. She was used to powerful men. Men who flaunted their wealth, their charm, their entitlement. But Damien Cross was different. He didn't chase. He pulled. Quietly. Relentlessly.

"I don't mix business with pleasure," she said, her voice low.

Damien's gaze didn't waver. "That's a shame. I do."

She should have walked away. She should have reminded herself that this was a job, not a seduction. But her feet stayed planted, and her body betrayed her—leaning in, just slightly, just enough.

He reached out, not to touch her, but to brush a strand of hair from her shoulder. His fingers didn't graze her skin, but the gesture felt intimate. Possessive.

"I want this gallery to reflect what I can't say out loud," he murmured. "And I want you to be the one who translates me."

Juliette swallowed hard. "That's a lot of trust."

"No," he said. "It's a test."

She met his eyes, and for the first time, she saw it—beneath the billionaire's armor, beneath the control and the cold—there was hunger. Not just for her body. For her mind. Her defiance. Her ability to see through the façade.

"I don't fail tests," she said.

Damien's lips curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "Neither do I."

A chime echoed through the gallery—his assistant, probably, or a reminder of the world outside this moment. But neither of them moved.

Juliette finally stepped back, breaking the spell. "I'll need full access to your collection. And your story."

"You'll have it," he said. "But be careful, Juliette. Some stories don't want to be told. They want to be lived."

She turned toward the elevator, her heels clicking like punctuation marks on marble. But before the doors closed, she looked back.

Damien was still watching her. Still waiting.

And Juliette knew—this wasn't just a job.

It was the beginning of an obsession.

Juliette stepping into the elevator, Damien watching her like a man who never lets go of what he wants.

The elevator doors closed, but Juliette could still feel him—his gaze, his presence, like heat pressed against her skin. She leaned back against the mirrored wall, exhaling slowly.

She had walked into that gallery expecting a job. She left it knowing she'd been chosen.

Not for her résumé.

For something else.

Something Damien Cross hadn't said out loud—but had made perfectly clear.

---

That night, Juliette couldn't sleep.

Her apartment was quiet, her bed too large, too cold. She stared at the ceiling, replaying every word, every look, every moment. The way he had stood so close without touching her. The way he had spoken like a man who didn't ask—he claimed.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown Number: You left too soon.

Her breath caught.

Juliette: I didn't realize there was more to see.

Unknown Number: There's more to feel.

She stared at the screen, pulse racing.

Unknown Number: Come back tomorrow. No assistants. No distractions. Just you and me.

---

The next evening, she returned.

The gallery was darker this time. Lit only by low amber sconces and the city lights beyond the glass. Damien was waiting, standing beside a new piece—a sculpture of two bodies entwined, abstract but unmistakably intimate.

"I had it delivered this morning," he said. "It reminded me of you."

Juliette stepped closer, her voice steady. "You barely know me."

"I know enough," he said. "You don't flinch. You don't pretend. You feel everything and hide it behind elegance."

She turned to face him. "And what do you hide behind?"

Damien stepped forward, slowly, deliberately. "Wealth. Power. Control. But none of it works on you."

Juliette's breath hitched. The space between them was charged, magnetic. She could feel the pull—not just physical, but emotional. Like he was unraveling something inside her she hadn't known was knotted.

He reached out, brushing her wrist with his fingers. Just a touch. But it felt like a promise.

"I don't want to control you," he said. "I want to watch you lose control—with me."

Juliette's heart pounded. She should have walked away. She should have said no.

But instead, she whispered, "Then stop watching."

Damien's eyes darkened. And the distance between them disappeared.
