Chapter 1 of The Billionaire's Mad Wife Strikes Back

The leather suitcase hit the gravel with a heavy thud, the latch snapping open to spill my silk slips onto the wet driveway.

"You missed a bag, Noah," Liam said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Our teenage son didn't hesitate. He heaved my vanity case out the front door, watching it tumble down the stone steps. My makeup shattered inside, a muffled crunch of expensive glass and powder.

"Noah, stop!" I lunged for the bag, but my daughter, Mia, stepped in my way. She was only twelve, but her eyes held a coldness that made my blood turn to ice.

"You’re embarrassing us, Mom," Mia muttered. "Just go with the doctors."

"Doctors?" I spun around, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Two men in white uniforms stood by the gate, flanking a white transport van with *Fairview Institute* stenciled on the side in clinical blue letters.

"Liam, what is this?" I demanded, turning to my husband. "I’m not going anywhere. I’m fine. The things I saw—the missing keys, the dates changing on the calendar—that wasn't me losing my mind. Someone was moving them!"

Liam stepped toward me, his face a mask of practiced concern. He reached out, his fingers wrapping around my chin with a grip that felt like a vice.

"The hallucinations are getting worse, Evelyn," he whispered. "You’re seeing conspiracies where there are only mistakes. You’re exhausted. You’re sick."

"I am not sick!" I tried to jerk my head away, but his thumb pressed hard into the soft flesh under my jaw.

"She’s having another episode," Liam called out to the paramedics.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, translucent blue pill.

"No," I gasped, my teeth clenching shut. "I won't take that. It makes my head foggy. It makes me forget."

"It makes you stable," Liam countered.

He pinched my nose shut. I struggled, my hands clawing at his wrists, but the oxygen deprivation forced me to gasp. The moment my mouth opened, he shoved the pill toward the back of my throat.

"Swallow it," he commanded.

He clamped his hand over my mouth, forcing me to gulp. The pill caught for a second, a sharp, scratchy intrusion against my windpipe that made my stomach churn with a sudden, violent nausea. I gagged, the bitter taste of the coating blooming on my tongue.

"There," Liam said, smoothing my hair back as if he hadn't just assaulted me. "Doesn't that feel better already?"

The paramedics moved in now. Their hands were heavy on my arms, pulling me toward the van.

"Wait! Noah! Mia!" I screamed, looking back at my children.

Noah wouldn't look at me. He was staring at the ground, his jaw tight. Mia just crossed her arms, her expression bored, as if I were a chore that had finally been finished.

"Be brave, Evelyn," Liam said, standing on the porch. "We'll visit when you're less... volatile."

The paramedics hoisted me into the back of the van. The interior was a cage of reinforced plastic and bolted-down benches. As they slammed the heavy doors shut, I scrambled to the small, barred window.

"Liam!" I shouted, banging my fist against the glass.

The van began to roll down the long, winding driveway of our estate. Through the iron bars, I saw Noah reach into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a thick manila envelope—the trust fund documents my father had left me—and handed them to Liam.

Liam didn't even look at the papers. He tucked them under his arm and turned to the side.

My personal assistant, Chloe, stepped out from behind the foyer pillar. She wasn't wearing her usual professional blazer. She was wearing my favorite silk robe, the one Liam bought me for our anniversary.

She didn't say a word. She simply walked up to my husband and wrapped her arms around his neck.

Liam didn't pull away. He leaned down and kissed her, his hand sliding down her back in a way that was intimately familiar.

my stomach twisted violently. The nausea from the pill intensified, a wave of hot bile rising in my throat. I leaned my head against the vibrating metal wall of the van, the world outside blurring into green and grey.

I didn't cry. The shock was too deep for tears, a cold numbness spreading from my chest to my fingertips.

I reached into my mouth, my fingers trembling as I fished into the side of my cheek. I hadn't swallowed it. I had tucked the pill into the pocket of my gum, letting the saliva dissolve only the very edge.

I spat the blue tablet into the cuff of my sweater, watching the vibrant dye stain the white wool.

"I'm not crazy," I whispered to the empty, padded van. "I'm a witness."

The drive to Fairview felt like an eternity. The hum of the tires on the pavement was the only sound, a rhythmic drone that threatened to pull me into the very fog Liam wanted for me. I focused on the stain on my sleeve. I focused on the image of Chloe in my robe.

When the van finally stopped, the doors swung open to reveal a looming grey structure. The air here felt different—heavy, damp, and smelling of industrial bleach.

"Welcome to Fairview, Mrs. Thorne," a stout nurse said, her voice devoid of any warmth. "I'm Nurse Grundy. Let’s get you settled."

They didn't ask me to walk. They wheeled me in a chair, through a series of buzzing security doors and past hallways filled with the low, haunting moans of people who had truly lost their way.

"I don't belong here," I said, my voice raspy.

"That’s what they all say, honey," Grundy replied. She pushed me into a small room at the end of a long corridor. "Room 402. Your new home for the foreseeable future."

The room was a concrete box. A single bed sat in the center, covered in a thin, grey blanket that smelled of mildew and old sweat. A tiny window, high up and barred, allowed a sliver of moonlight to hit the floor.

Grundy stood in the doorway, her hand on the heavy steel handle.

"Lights out in ten minutes. If you need anything, there’s a call button. Not that it’ll do you much good tonight. The doctor won't see you until morning."

The door slammed shut with a finality that echoed in my bones. I heard the bolt slide home.

I stood in the center of the room, my legs shaking. I needed to move. I needed to think.

I walked to the bed, the springs creaking under the slightest pressure. I sat down, the thin mattress feeling like a slab of gym foam. My hand brushed against the side of the frame, and I felt something—a slight tear in the fabric of the underside of the mattress.

I froze, listening for footsteps in the hall. Silence.

I reached under the mattress, my fingers searching the gap. My nails caught on something hard and rectangular. I pulled it out, my heart racing.

It was a small, black prepaid phone, its screen cracked but glowing with a faint, dying light. Taped to the back of the phone was a scrap of yellowed paper.

I held it up to the sliver of moonlight.

There were four words written in a frantic, jagged hand:

*Time to wake up.*

The phone vibrated in my hand, a silent alert flashing on the screen. An incoming text from an unknown number.

I stared at the message, my breath catching in my throat.

*They think you're sleeping. Don't close your eyes.*
