Chapter 1 of The Bankrupt CEO's Secret Billionaire Ex-Wife

"She bought us the newest iPhones and doesn't make us do chores. You're just a boring housewife, Mom."

My fourteen-year-old son said this in family court, choosing my husband's twenty-two-year-old influencer mistress over me. They wanted the flashy mansion and the unrestricted credit cards.

So I packed my bags, revoked their access to my hidden trust fund, and let them find out who really funded their lavish lifestyle. Will they survive when the money dries up and the new 'mom' locks them out?

The crisp rustle of thick parchment broke the silence of our master bedroom. I pulled the folded slip of paper from the inner lining of Marcus's custom Tom Ford shirt. It wasn't a dry cleaning ticket or a restaurant receipt. It was a wire transfer confirmation for a two-million-dollar down payment on a luxury yacht.

The buyer's signature at the bottom was written in elegant, looping dark blue ink: Chloe Vance.

My fingers traced the letters. For months, I had convinced myself Marcus was just going through a midlife crisis. A temporary lapse in judgment that required my patience. I had ignored the late nights, the sudden password changes on his phone, the lingering scent of vanilla perfume on his coats.

This piece of paper destroyed that lie. He wasn't just having a fling. He was funding a mistress with the wealth I had helped him build from the ground up. The yacht was named Ocean Whisper. Delivery scheduled for next Tuesday. In Miami.

I smoothed the receipt flat on the mahogany nightstand. Pulling out my phone, I snapped a clear, high-resolution photo of the document. I made sure the date, the amount, and Chloe's signature were perfectly in focus. Then, I folded the parchment precisely along its original creases and slipped it back into the hidden pocket of the shirt.

The bedroom door slammed open against the wall.

"Why isn't my blue jersey in my locker?" Leo demanded.

My seventeen-year-old stepson stood in the doorway, clutching a sleek, unreleased gaming console to his chest. He didn't even knock.

I held up a pair of Marcus's slacks. "It's in the laundry bin. I haven't run the darks yet."

"You literally do nothing else all day," Leo scoffed. He stepped further into the room, his sneakers tracking dirt onto the white Persian rug. "You just sit around this house spending my dad's money. The least you could do is make sure my gear is ready for practice."

I dropped the slacks onto the bed. The fabric hit the mattress with a soft thud. "I manage this household, Leo. I manage your tutors, your medical appointments, and your father's schedule. And I asked you to bring your laundry down yesterday morning."

"Whatever." Leo tapped the shiny casing of the console. "Chloe actually pays attention to me. She bought me the new Apex Pro before it even hit the shelves. She said my dad works too hard to worry about this stuff, so she took care of it."

My jaw tightened. "Chloe bought that for you."

"Yeah," Leo said, his chin jutting out. "She said a guy my age needs a proper setup. Not that you'd understand. You just nag me about chores and tell me to turn down my music."

He turned his back on me and marched down the hall. The echo of his heavy footsteps faded, leaving a ringing silence in my ears. The mistress wasn't just taking my husband's money. She was buying my stepson's loyalty, weaponizing him against me right under my own roof.

Downstairs, the heavy oak front door clicked shut. Heavy footsteps approached the stairs. Marcus walked into the bedroom a minute later, yanking his silk tie loose.

"Pack my large silver suitcase," Marcus said, not looking at me. He tossed his leather briefcase onto the velvet armchair. "I have a closed-door industry summit next week. Full lockdown, no spouses allowed."

"Where is the summit?" I asked, picking up a stack of his dress shirts.

"Miami," he replied, unbuttoning his cuffs. He threw his gold cufflinks onto the dresser. They clattered against the wood.

"Miami," I repeated. "In July. During hurricane season."

"It's where the board decided to host it," he snapped, finally meeting my gaze. His eyes were bloodshot, defensive. "Are you going to interrogate me or pack the bag? I need to be at the airport by six tomorrow morning."

"I'm just asking a question, Marcus. Usually, you give me more than a week's notice for a closed-door summit. Usually, you ask me to coordinate the flights."

"Things change, Clara. My assistant handled it. Adapt."

Before I could respond, Leo pushed his way back into the room.

"Dad, look!" Leo shoved the gaming console toward Marcus. "The Apex Pro. It's insane. It has the new haptic feedback controllers."

Marcus blinked, his defensive posture faltering. "Where did you get that? Those don't release until next month."

"Chloe," Leo said brightly. "She dropped it off after school."

The color drained from Marcus's face. He shot a frantic glance in my direction. I kept my expression completely blank, folding a crisp white undershirt with steady hands.

"That was generous of her," Marcus managed to choke out. He shoved a hand through his hair, his eyes darting between me and the console. "Take it to your room, Leo. I need to talk to Clara."

"Don't yell at her," Leo muttered, shooting me a glare. "Chloe is way cooler than she is. She actually listens to what I want."

"Go to your room, Leo," Marcus barked.

Leo rolled his eyes and vanished down the hall, clutching the console like a prize.

Marcus cleared his throat. He tugged at his collar, suddenly looking very warm. "Clara, about the console."

"She must be a very dedicated assistant," I interrupted, placing the folded undershirt into the silver suitcase. "Buying expensive, unreleased gifts for your son. You should give her a bonus."

Marcus exhaled a long, shaky sigh. The tension bled out of his shoulders. He actually believed I was that stupid.

"She's a hard worker," Marcus said, his voice regaining its usual arrogant clip. "She has good connections in the tech industry. That's all."

"Of course," I said. "I'll make sure to thank her at the company gala."

"No need for that," Marcus said quickly. "I'm going to take a shower. Make sure you pack my linen suits. Miami is humid this time of year."

He disappeared into the master bathroom. The water turned on, hissing against the glass tiles.

I walked over to my vanity and picked up my phone. The screen illuminated my face in the dim room. I opened the banking app linked to our family accounts.

Leo had three supplementary credit cards under my primary account. One for gas, one for clothes, and one for his endless gourmet food deliveries. I paid the balances every month without a word.

I tapped the screen.

Cancel card one.

Cancel card two.

Cancel card three.

A prompt popped up on the screen requesting a reason for cancellation. I selected stolen.

Let Chloe buy his gas from now on. Let her fund his lifestyle.

Next, I opened my encrypted messaging app. I attached the photo of the two-million-dollar yacht receipt and typed a message to David, my private divorce attorney.

I found where the missing funds are going. Start the asset freeze.

I hit send. The message turned green, then marked as read.

My phone buzzed immediately with a reply from David.

Are you sure, Clara? Once I file this, there is no going back.

File it, I typed back.

I locked my phone and set it face down on the vanity. I walked back to the bed and picked up the dark Tom Ford shirt. The parchment receipt crinkled faintly inside the lining. Instead of packing it into the silver suitcase, I carried the shirt to the massive walk-in closet.

I grabbed a thick velvet hanger. I draped the shirt over it, smoothing the collar. The parchment receipt remained tucked inside the inner breast pocket, the very edge of the white paper visible against the dark fabric.

I hung the shirt front and center in the closet, directly under the harsh glare of the overhead display lights.

He always wore this exact shirt on his early morning flights.
