Chapter 1 of Shadows in Moonlight

The relentless snowfall enveloped me as I trudged through the desolate streets, my breath visible in the crisp winter air. The full moon shone brilliantly, casting an eerie glow upon the white blanket beneath. I had always cherished the snow, but this night, it felt distinct, as though the full moon itself was summoning me, its silvery light beckoning me forward on an enigmatic journey.

The snow pirouetted and swirled in the moonlight, creating an otherworldly ambiance that made me feel like I was walking through a dream. As I advanced, I had the uncanny sensation of being the sole inhabitant in this winter wonderland. The silence was deafening, punctuated only by the crunching of snow beneath my boots and the sporadic howling of the wind. In spite of the biting cold, I couldn't help but experience a profound sense of tranquility and serenity washing over me. It was as if the snow was purging my mind and cleansing my soul. I didn't know my destination, but an irresistible force urged me to continue, drawn by the hypnotic allure of the full moon.

Upon finally reaching my home, I glimpsed my father sitting in the living room through the window. I opened the door and was greeted by the warm, inviting aroma of hot cocoa. My father looked up from his book and beamed as I entered. "Welcome home, dear."

I couldn't resist returning the smile, finding comfort and safety in the familiarity of my own abode. Hastily shedding my coat and boots, I joined my father by the fireplace, appreciating the warmth and companionship on such a cold, snowy night.

As we conversed, I could feel my eyelids growing heavy. It had been a long day, and I yearned for rest. "Well, I think it's about time for me to head to bed," I announced, rising from the couch. "Goodnight, Dad," I added, embracing him and planting a kiss on his cheek before ascending to my bedroom. Slipping into my pajamas and crawling into bed, I savored the soft sheets against my skin and the comforting embrace of my home. With a deep sigh, I allowed myself to drift into a peaceful slumber.

In the ensuing days, as temperatures climbed, the trees burst forth with new growth, adorning the landscape with vibrant colors. The bleak winter gray gave way to the splendor of spring, with birds serenading and the fragrant bloom of flowers filling the air. One morning, I awoke to the sun streaming through my window, signaling the arrival of spring's embrace. I threw open my window to invite in the fresh air and the sounds of children at play. Deciding to take a leisurely stroll in the park, I immersed myself in the beauty of nature, reveling in the lush green grass and the riotous display of flowers. It invigorated my senses, infusing me with a sense of renewal and hope.

However, as the seasons shifted, the school days seemed to stretch on endlessly. Seated at my desk, struggling to maintain focus during a tedious strategy lecture, my thoughts wandered incessantly. The day felt interminable, and my longing to return home intensified.

Abruptly, I was yanked back to reality by my teacher's voice. "Miss Smith, can you answer the question?" he inquired, his tone tinged with irritation.

I looked up, realizing that every eye in the room was fixed upon me, and I could feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment as I acknowledged my lack of attention. "Oh, um, what was the question again?" I asked, attempting to mask my embarrassment with a sheepish smile.

"Why is the battle between the Windy Pines and Winter Lake so important?" he repeated, his annoyance palpable.

"Ah, right," I replied, making an effort to collect my thoughts. "There are two significant aspects to that battle. First, the Windy Pines pack became the first in 150 years to challenge the Lycan royal family at Winter Lake. Second, it marked the first instance where a combination of human and wolf forms was employed to defeat an enemy in battle. Prior to that, all confrontations were exclusively fought in wolf form. This alteration in combat tactics fundamentally reshaped the way warfare was approached from then on."

"Correct," my teacher affirmed sternly. "Please make sure you pay attention in the future."

I nodded, still feeling embarrassed, while my sister Eleanor chimed in from across the room, "Good job, dumbo."

"Enough, Miss Smith," our teacher warned her.

Eleanor just shrugged and flashed her perfect smile, tossing her perfect blonde hair over her shoulder. "I'm sorry, Mr. Williams. I'll leave my little sister alone."

"You're only two and a half minutes older than me, Eleanor," I retorted, prompting laughter from the rest of the class.

DING DING DING

As the bell signaled the end of the school day, I gathered my belongings and practically dashed out of the classroom, eager to escape Eleanor. However, my path was intercepted by a familiar voice. "Where are you off to in such a hurry?"

I turned to see Jayden, my boyfriend, strolling toward me. His bright smile and perfect teeth were irresistible, and he pulled me in for a quick kiss on the cheek while wrapping an arm around my waist.

"Jayden, thank goodness it's you. Eleanor has been on a rampage today."

"She's not that bad," he replied, earning an eye roll from me.

"She's not that good either! And she looks nothing like me, by the way. I have silver hair, not blond like hers."

"My bad," he chuckled. "Your hair is definitely distinctive."

As we continued down the hall, a teacher greeted Jayden as the "future Alpha." I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as I watched the teacher lavish attention on him while mostly ignoring me. But Jayden was quick to reassure me as we stepped into the fresh air.

"Don't let it get you down, sweetheart. We're almost done here. We'll turn 18 soon and have our whole lives ahead of us."

"I know," I said, twirling a strand of hair around my finger as I looked up at him.

Jayden was an incredibly striking and undeniably attractive guy. He stood tall with an athletic build, his toned muscles visible even under his clothing, particularly when he wore his snug tank tops. His dark, wavy hair was always styled to accentuate his sharp features and piercing blue eyes. His chiseled jawline and well-defined cheekbones gave him a strong, masculine appearance radiating confidence and sex appeal. His warm and inviting smile added to his overall charm, making him seem genuinely caring.

"Do you ever find it strange that we haven't experienced anything yet?" I asked hesitantly. "No spark, no longing, no impulse—nothing?"

Jayden pondered for a moment before shaking his head. "No, I don't find it strange. We're not 18 yet. Perhaps that's when we're supposed to experience that spark."

"I suppose," I replied, feeling somewhat relieved. "But have you heard about Prince Edmond? He's almost nineteen, and he still hasn't found his mate."

"Almost nineteen? That's unusual, especially for a royal lycan," Jayden remarked.

"Yeah, I can't recall a royal not finding their mate by eighteen in centuries," I added.

"Perhaps his mate is located outside the royal city," Jayden suggested as he held the car door open for me.

Sitting in the car, I gazed out the window while a persistent feeling gnawed at the back of my mind. Something didn't feel quite right, but I couldn't quite pinpoint it.

I turned to Jayden, who was adjusting the radio. "Do you ever feel different, like something's missing?" I inquired.

"Different? How?" he responded.

"I don't know. It's just... there's something not quite right. Like something's absent," I tried to convey the feeling.
