Chapter 1 of Rejected While Carrying His Pup

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I felt it snap before I heard the words—a white-hot severance that started at the base of my skull and tore downward through my chest like someone had reached inside and ripped out my spine. My knees hit the ceremonial stone before I could catch myself. The ultrasound image was still folded in my jacket pocket, the ink still warm from the printer.

Cameron stood on the platform twenty feet away, his back to me, his voice carrying across the assembled pack in formal Alpha register. "I, Cameron, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Alina, as my mate and Luna."

The crowd parted as I tried to push forward. Every wolf turned to stare. I opened my mouth but nothing came out—the bond was already unraveling, pulling itself apart thread by thread, and the pain was so complete I couldn't breathe around it.

He turned to Livia. She stood beside him in a dress I'd never seen, her hand already resting on his forearm like she'd been practicing the gesture. Cameron's voice softened when he looked at her. "I claim you, Livia Garza, as my chosen mate before the Moon Goddess and this pack."

My wolf howled inside my chest. Not the kind of howl that comes out—the kind that stays trapped, shredding you from the inside. I pressed one hand to my abdomen where the pregnancy still felt like a lit candle, something precious I'd been carrying to him like a gift.

The severance hit its final stage. The mark on my neck—the one he'd given me seven years ago in the basement apartment we'd shared before his father died—went cold first, then empty, then nothing. Like a door slamming shut in an abandoned room. I felt the exact moment it disappeared.

I hit the ground hard. My palms scraped stone. Someone in the crowd gasped but no one moved.

Then the cramping started.

It felt like my body was trying to turn itself inside out. A hot, tearing pain low in my abdomen that made the bond-break feel like a warning. I curled forward, my forehead against the cold ceremonial stone, and tasted copper.

"Maren!" Zara's voice cut through the frozen silence. "Maren, now!"

The pack healer shoved through the crowd and dropped to her knees beside me. Her hands were already glowing faintly with her healing gift as she pressed them to my abdomen. Her face went pale.

"The Luna is losing her pup," Maren said. Her voice was flat, clinical, but it carried. Every wolf heard it.

I turned my head just enough to see Cameron on the platform. He had his arm around Livia now. She was smiling—not gloating, just smiling, like she'd won something fair and square. Cameron's jaw was tight but he didn't look down. He didn't look at me at all.

Zara crouched beside Maren, her hands shaking as she gripped my shoulder. "Stay with me, Alina. Stay with me."

The cramping intensified. I felt something inside me let go—not all at once but in stages, each one worse than the last. Maren's healing light pulsed brighter but it wasn't enough. The biological shock of the severed bond was tearing through every system in my body at once, and the pregnancy couldn't survive it.

I tried to speak. Tried to tell Cameron that I'd come to tell him about the pup, that I'd run all the way from the healer's station with the news pressed against my ribs like something breakable. But my throat wouldn't work.

Blood pooled on the stone beneath me. Someone in the crowd made a choked sound.

Cameron stepped down from the platform. For half a second I thought he was coming toward me. Then he turned and walked in the opposite direction, Livia's hand still tucked into the crook of his arm. The crowd parted for them. No one stopped him. No one said a word.

Maren worked through the night. I remember pieces of it—the healer's station ceiling, Zara's voice low and furious in the corner, the taste of blood every time I tried to swallow. Maren's hands never stopped glowing. She pulled me back from the edge three separate times.

By dawn I was still alive. Pale and hollow and empty in ways that had nothing to do with blood loss, but alive.

I sat up slowly. Zara was asleep in the chair beside the cot, her head tipped back against the wall, her jaw still locked even in sleep. Maren stood at the supply table with her back to me, her shoulders rigid.

"The pup?" My voice came out raw.

Maren didn't turn around. "Gone. And the damage..." She stopped. Started again. "You won't be able to carry another."

I nodded. I'd already known. I'd felt it go.

I stood. My legs shook but they held. I walked out of the healer's station in the same bloodstained clothes I'd collapsed in, crossed the empty pack house grounds, and climbed back onto the ceremonial platform.

The pack was already gathering. Word had spread. They came in twos and threes, filling the space in front of the platform until the crowd looked almost the same as it had the morning before.

I waited until Cameron appeared at the back. He stopped when he saw me. His face was unreadable.

I didn't look at him. I looked at the pack.

"I invoke the Luna Accord," I said. My voice cracked but it carried. "Cameron is permanently barred from ever marking another Luna."

The words burned as they left my mouth—not metaphorically. I felt them sear into the air between us, felt them latch onto him like silver. Cameron's hand flew to his forearm and he staggered. When he pulled his sleeve back, the brand was already there: irremovable, silver-scarred, visible.

I turned and walked off the platform. Zara was waiting at the bottom of the steps.

"Let's go," I said.

We went back to the Alpha's quarters one last time. I set my Luna sigil ring on Cameron's desk—didn't throw it, just set it down—and picked up my mother's pendant from the dresser. It was the only thing in that room that had been mine before I was anyone's Luna.

I severed the pack mind-link as we crossed the threshold. It felt like cutting a rope I'd been holding for seven years. My wolf didn't stir. She'd gone silent the moment the bond broke, and she hadn't come back.

Zara and I walked through Ironveil territory in silence. At the border, she stopped and closed her eyes. I felt the moment she severed her own mind-link—a sharp, clean break that left no thread behind.

"You didn't have to do that," I said quietly.

She opened her eyes and looked at me. "Yes, I did."

We crossed the border together at dawn. Behind us, Ironveil's territory disappeared from every sensory range. Ahead, the coastal road stretched empty and endless.

I didn't look back.
