Rejected Ex-Mate: Now Untouchable Summary

I abandoned my aerospace career to become Luna of the Blackwood Pack, only to lose my daughter while my fated mate partied with his mistress. After signing his rejection, I threw myself into the furnace with my child's body. But I woke at that same birthday party, my daughter alive beside me. This time, I unclasped my silver mate-bond bracelet before the pack elders and rejected Chalmers Mccormick. Chapter 1 of Rejected Ex-Mate: Now Untouchable

Anika's POV:

The long, drawn-out beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the universe. It echoed in the hollow space behind my ribs, a flat, endless note that had replaced my own heartbeat.

I leaned against the cold, sterile wall of the hospital corridor. My fingertips were white where I pressed them into the plaster, trying to anchor myself to something real.

Just minutes ago, Dr. Evans had stood before me. He pulled down his surgical mask, and his eyes, exhausted and full of a pity I couldn't bear, met mine.

"Mrs. Mccormick," he had said, his voice gentle. "We did everything we could."

My brain refused to process the words. It was like watching a movie with the sound turned off. I saw his lips move, but the meaning scattered into dust before it could reach me.

My gaze drifted past him, through the glass of the ICU door.

To the small form on the bed, covered by a stark white sheet.

My daughter. My six-year-old Kira.

Then, the pain hit. It wasn't an emotion. It was a physical force, a sharp, brutal fist that clenched around my heart and twisted. My stomach churned violently, and the floor tilted beneath my feet. I nearly buckled.

I fumbled for my phone, my hands shaking uncontrollably. The screen lit up, showing more than a dozen missed calls. All from me. All to one person.

Chalmers.

My thumb, clumsy and numb, pressed his contact again. Each ring was a hammer blow against my skull.

It went to voicemail. Of course, it did.

His voice, the one that used to make my soul sing, filled the silence. It was crisp, professional, and utterly detached. "This is Chalmers Mccormick. Please leave a message."

I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. Only a choked, animalistic whimper lodged in my throat.

I slid down the wall, my legs giving out completely. The phone slipped from my grasp, clattering onto the linoleum floor. The screen stayed lit, its wallpaper a photo of Kira and me laughing in a park.

She had his dark hair, but my hazel eyes. In the picture, she was smiling like a tiny sun.

Tears finally broke free, silent streams carving paths down my cheeks and dripping onto the cold floor.

I remembered calling him when Kira first got sick, begging him to come home early. "Anika, it's just a common cold," he'd said, his voice laced with impatience. "Don't be dramatic. I have important Pack business to attend to."

I remembered the day she was admitted to the ICU. I was sobbing into the phone, but it wasn't him who answered. It was his secretary, Chloe. "The Alpha is in a meeting with a very important guest, Mrs. Mccormick. He cannot be disturbed."

That "important guest," I knew, was Harriet Mercer.

A nurse approached, her expression soft with sympathy. She told me I could go in, spend some more time with Kira.

I pulled myself up, my body feeling like it was made of lead and glass. Each step toward the room was a fresh agony.

I sat on the edge of the bed and took Kira's small, cool hand in mine. The back of it was bruised from the IV needles.

Gently, I brushed a stray strand of hair from her forehead. I started to hum her favorite lullaby, the one about the moonbeams and the sleeping wolves.

The melody was fractured, broken by my own ragged sobs.

I felt something inside me begin to die. It was the bond, the sacred connection the Moon Goddess was said to forge between fated mates. It had once flared to life whenever Chalmers was near. Now, it was turning to ice, cracking and splintering into nothing.

"Fated mates," I whispered, a laugh escaping my lips that sounded more like a sob. "The Moon Goddess's greatest gift."

What a fucking joke.

My inner wolf, the part of my soul that had once rejoiced at his presence, let out a final, mournful howl in the back of my mind, and then fell silent. Utterly, terrifyingly silent.

I leaned down, pressing my cheek to Kira's cold forehead. "I'm so sorry, baby," I whispered, my voice raw. "Mommy is so useless. I couldn't protect you."

A cold resolve began to form in the wreckage of my heart.

This had to end. All of it. This house of lies, this ghost of a marriage.

I stood up, took one last look at Kira's peaceful face, and turned away.

As I walked out of the room, the grief in my eyes had been replaced by a dead, hollow emptiness.

My phone vibrated on the floor where I'd dropped it. I picked it up numbly, a foolish flicker of hope igniting that it was him, finally calling back.

It wasn't.

It was a text from an unknown number.

The message on the screen was brutally formal. "Ms. Mccormick, this is Eternity Light Cremation Services. Regarding the arrangements for your daughter, Kira Mccormick, when would be a convenient time for you to come in and sign the paperwork?"
