Chapter 1 of My Mate Rejected Me to Crown Another Luna

The glass vial cracked against my palm at eight forty-seven, the exact second Luca lifted Maci's hand into the light and called her 'the heartbeat of Ironvale's strength.'

I stood at the back of the hall, invisible among Ironvale's own wolves, and felt the mark on my neck go cold. Not sharp. Cold, the way a door goes cold right after it shuts. Through the bond I felt his wolf lean forward, hungry, chasing a scent layered thick as perfume—jasmine over cedarwood, Maci's scent, laid over every inch of him like a second skin. Five regional Alphas watched him say her name. Not once, in the twenty minutes he spoke, did he say mine.

My fingers found the seam of the moonpetal vial in my pocket—the anniversary tonic I'd spent three nights brewing, steeped in silverleaf under the dark moon because that was the only way to make it right. The glass edge bit into my palm. I didn't make a sound. I put it back in my pocket and I did not take it out again.

By midnight I had traced the missing herb requisition myself, the ledger open on my knee in the storage room that smelled of mildew and old bandages. Luca had authorized a private chamber for Maci six weeks ago—full lunar-herb stock, moonpetal, silverleaf, everything I'd been begging his quartermaster for since spring. My own shelves held dust and empty jars. Above me, the ceiling still wept its brown water stain onto the floorboards.

Maci posted a photo an hour later. His bed in the background, the sheets still creased. *His moonlight,* the caption said. The bond pulsed warm and settled, his wolf drowsing in contentment somewhere far away, anchored to a scent that wasn't mine.

I didn't cry. I opened my mother's manuscript to the first page and read the creed until my breathing matched the shape of the words.

The next morning I carried the finished wolfsbane antidote to the pack house myself—Grant Reyes, Luca's Beta, had taken a silver blade to the thigh at the border, and only my formula closed a wound like that clean. I found Luca behind a folding screen, feeding Maci moonpetal extract from a spoon like she was something breakable and precious. His inner circle lounged on the couches, half-dressed in morning ease.

"She's a wolfless dead weight he should've shed years ago," one of them said, not lowering his voice.

Another laughed. "Even an Omega pulls more weight."

Luca heard. I know he heard, because his wolf's contentment through the bond went a shade deeper, settling in tighter around Maci's proximity instead of flinching away from the insult aimed at his mate.

"Set it on the table and go, Serena." His voice dropped into the Alpha register, that low compulsion meant to bend a spine.

I set the vial down. I did not go quickly, and I did not lower my eyes first. I let the silence stretch until it was mine, then I turned and walked out on my own rhythm, not his command.

That night, alone with the damp ceiling and the smell of drying herbs, something moved in my chest. A flicker. Warm, unfamiliar, gone before I could hold it—the first sound from the wolf that had never once answered me in twenty-three years. I pressed my palm flat over my sternum and went still.

"I will be worthy of what you gave me," I whispered to the manuscript, to my grandmother, to whatever had just stirred.

Before dawn, I sealed a formal petition with my mother's correspondence seal and sent it through the Lycan Council's bloodline-violation channel. It was done. Submitted. Irreversible.

The next afternoon, Maci appeared in my doorway with a printed notice and a smile stretched thin as paper.

"Sweet older sister," she said, holding it out. "Luca thought it made sense—reallocating your herb allotment to my chamber. You understand."

I took the notice with a steady hand. I read every line while she watched, waiting for my face to crack. It didn't.

When she left, I photographed the page, uploaded it beside the others, and labeled the file with the date in careful block letters.

Then I went back to organizing my shelves, one jar at a time, while somewhere above me, footsteps crossed the floor toward the private chamber that was never meant to be mine.
