My Mate Publicly Rejected Me for the Alpha's Daughter Summary

The searing heat of a branding iron couldn't match the agony of my world shattering. When a gold-embossed invitation slipped from William's pocket, the brutal reality was laid bare: a Mate Ceremony was planned between my fated mate and Isabelle, the Alpha's daughter. As the Council seal caught the light, my fragile wolf fell completely silent. I refused to shed a single tear, even as the ultimate, public rejection loomed before the entire pack.

Chapter 1 of My Mate Publicly Rejected Me for the Alpha's Daughter

The iron hissed against William's collar at 6:47 in the evening, three days before he stood in front of his whole pack and ended me.

A gold-embossed envelope slid from his coat pocket onto the floor. I picked it up without thinking, the way I picked up everything of his—socks, dry cleaning, excuses. The Council seal caught the lamp light. *Mate Ceremony. William Kingsley and Isabelle Franklin. Officiated by Alpha Franklin.*

My hand didn't move off the iron fast enough. It scorched a black stripe into his collar before I felt the heat at all. Somewhere behind my ribs, my wolf—thin, muffled, barely more than a memory—let out one small whine and went quiet again.

I didn't cry. I set the invitation flat on the kitchen table, squared its edges like I was pressing a seam, and waited.

That evening I followed his scent two blocks to a café and stood across the street in the first snow of the season. Isabelle shivered, laughing at something. William unwound the scarf from his own neck—my scarf, the Ashwood wool I'd stitched his initials into our first winter together—and draped it around her throat like it belonged there. Like it always had. I watched until my fingers went numb, then I walked home.

He came back near midnight smelling of orchids and someone else's perfume. He saw the invitation on the table. His jaw tightened—not guilt, just irritation, the look of a man annoyed his schedule had been disrupted.

"What does this mean?" My voice came out smaller than I wanted.

"It means what it says." He didn't sit. "Kaira, the marking in Ashwood was never sealed before a Council witness. It doesn't hold. It was never going to hold."

"I sold my parents' land for you." My voice cracked on *land*, on two years folded into three words.

He touched the back of his neck. "That territory was worthless anyway."

Then the Alpha-tone came, borrowed and ugly in his mouth. "Leave. Quietly. Before the Banquet."

My knees buckled—two years of suppression answering a command bred into my bones. But underneath it, something older refused to fold. I bit down on my tongue until I tasted copper, and I did not move. I did not leave.

Three days later, under the Silverfang Solstice chandeliers, Alpha Franklin called the hall to order. William stepped forward from the crowd, raised his hand toward where I stood at the edge, and his voice carried to every corner of the room.

"I, William Kingsley, Beta-candidate of Silverfang Pack, reject you, Kaira Barnes, as my mate, and sever the bond bestowed by the Moon Goddess."

The mark on my throat went cold first, like a door closing on an empty room. Then it cracked—I felt it crack, a black seam splitting down skin that had been warm for two years—and something inside me that had been singing since I was nineteen simply stopped.

My knees hit the marble. The whole hall watched me fall. Isabelle's mouth curved into something small and satisfied. William did not look back.

Two Omega servers half-carried me into the corridor, murmuring things I didn't hear. I leaned against the cold wall and caught a scent rising off my own shoulder—the place his hand had rested that morning, steadying me like a kindness.

Wolfsbane. Acrid, chemical, unmistakable.

Not protection. Never protection. Applied by his own hand every single morning for two years, so the pack would never smell what we were to each other while he perfumed himself for another woman.

The second rejection landed harder than the first.

I didn't go back to his apartment. I walked out into the December cold in the dress I'd worn to watch him marry someone else in front of witnesses, my mother's needle in its pouch pressed hard against my chest, the black crack on my throat already scarring over.

I had no bond left. No wolf's voice. No home.

But I had his hand's own poison still on my skin, and I knew exactly which door in this city didn't care whose daughter I wasn't.
