Chapter 1 of My Mate Chose His Mistress Over Our Pack

The bond broke at exactly 9:47 p.m., three days before what should have been our five-year anniversary.

I felt it the moment Isaiah rose from the head table. His hand was on Evie Brooks' waist — not resting, but claiming — and every wolf in the banquet hall could smell it. Her scent clung to his skin in layers. Jasmine and something sharper, like crushed berries left too long in the sun. It didn't just sit on the surface. It had soaked in.

He turned to face me at my Luna's seat. The chandeliers above us caught the gold in his eyes, the same eyes that had never really seen me. Around us, the annual Pack Banquet fell silent. Every ranked wolf, every allied delegation, every Delta who had ever taken orders from me — they all watched.

"I, Isaiah Morrison, Alpha of Ironclaw," he said, his voice carrying across the hall with that practiced authority he wore like a second skin, "reject you, Arabella Stewart, as my mate."

The incomplete mark on my neck went cold first. Not painful — just suddenly, brutally absent, like a door slamming shut in an empty room. Then it went gray. I could feel the color draining from it, the bond-mark dying on my skin like frost retreating from glass.

My wolf surged inside my chest — not with grief, but with something volcanic and raw. *He was never ours,* she snarled, her voice ripping through my consciousness for the first time in months. *He was never Clark.*

Clark's name. She had spoken Clark's name.

The cedar-and-frost scent I had been clinging to for five years suddenly smelled wrong. A counterfeit. A lie I had been telling myself because the truth was too heavy to carry.

I staggered once. My hand caught the edge of the table, and I felt the wood grain press into my palm. The hall held its breath.

I did not fall.

I pressed my fingertips together beneath the table — once, briefly — and released them. Then I stood.

Isaiah's mouth curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. He expected me to break. To beg. To prove that the five years I had spent managing his alliances, training his warriors, holding his pack together while he took credit for every victory — that all of it had been devotion.

It hadn't.

"Under the Luna Accord," I said, my voice level and precise, carrying no tremor, "a rejected Luna retains interim command authority over all pack operations until formal succession is established under Council law."

The hall went still in a different way. This wasn't shock. This was calculation.

"I invoke that authority now," I continued. "Effective immediately, I am interim commander of Ironclaw Pack operations, alliances, and territorial defense. Alpha Morrison's personal belongings will be removed from the pack house before dawn."

Isaiah's face went rigid. "You can't—"

"I just did." I met his eyes without flinching. "The Accord is Council law. If you contest it, you contest the Council."

His wolf surged, and his Alpha tone rolled across the hall like a thunderclap. It was the tone that had made lesser wolves bare their necks for a decade. The tone that said *obey or be crushed.*

I met it with silence.

Not defiance. Not argument. Just absolute, unyielding silence.

The room held for three seconds. Then, one by one, the wolves in the hall dropped their gazes — not to him, but for me. Rowan Hale, the senior Delta who had challenged every decision I had ever made, lowered his eyes first. Then the others followed.

Isaiah felt it. I saw the exact moment he realized the ground had shifted beneath a certainty he had never examined. His Alpha tone faltered, flickered, and died in his throat.

Evie's hand tightened on his arm. Her jasmine-and-berries scent spiked with something that smelled like panic.

I turned and walked out of the banquet hall. My spine was straight. My hands were steady. And I did not look back.

---

I went to the healer's ward.

The pack house was behind me, still lit and buzzing with the chaos I had left in my wake. But the ward was quiet. It always was.

Clark's room was at the end of the hall. I stood at the window and looked in.

His chest rose and fell by machine. It had been rising and falling by machine for five years. His wolf had never woken. His eyes had never opened. The rogue ambush had shattered his skull the night before my eighteenth birthday, and I had spent every day since mourning him with the wrong man's scent.

"I asked you to hurry," I said quietly to the empty room. "And you did. And it killed you."

My fingertips did not touch the glass.

"I've been holding on to you with someone else's face," I continued. "And I didn't even realize it until tonight."

My wolf was silent now, but I could feel her presence — not broken, not grieving, but waiting.

I turned away from the window. I did not cry. I had cried once, alone in the forest on the first anniversary of his death, and I had not permitted myself to since.

I walked back to the pack house with my chin level and my mind already building the structure of what came next.

---

I spent the hours before dawn at my desk.

Formal notices to every allied pack. Documentation of Isaiah's rejection vow, witnessed by two hundred wolves. Invocation of the Luna Accord on the record. Preliminary notification to the Lycan Council registrar of a potential tribunal petition.

By the time the first light touched the eastern windows, the legal architecture of my position was already immovable.

I sealed the last envelope with my Luna's mark — still mine under Council law until succession was formalized — and set it on the outgoing pile.

Then I heard footsteps in the hall.

Isaiah's voice, low and furious, echoing from the direction of his quarters. "She can't do this. She can't just—"

"She already did," someone replied. Dara Osei, the pack healer. Her voice was calm, factual. "And if you contest the Accord, you'll lose more than your quarters."

I rose from my desk and opened the door.

Isaiah stood in the hallway, flanked by two Deltas carrying boxes. His belongings. His clothes, his files, his trophies from battles I had planned.

He looked at me, and for the first time in five years, I saw something in his face that wasn't arrogance.

It was fear.

"Arabella," he started.

I walked past him without breaking stride.

Behind me, I heard Dara's quiet voice. "Dawn, Alpha Morrison. You have until dawn."
