"Mom has us, but Emma has no one," my nine-year-old son Finn cried, tugging at his father's sleeve.

I lay on the hospital gurney, my white dress soaked in the blood of my five-month pregnancy.

In the opposite gurney lay Emma, my husband Cole's childhood friend.

She had intentionally thrown herself down the stairs, dragging me along with her.

David, the pack doctor, rushed out of the operating room with two consent forms.

He demanded that Cole choose who would receive the single available emergency surgery slot first.

Without a second thought, Cole signed Emma's form and walked to her side.

He didn't even look at my bleeding stomach.

My mate and my son left me alone in the freezing hallway.

The surgical doors closed on Emma, sealing my baby's fate.

When Cole finally returned to check on me, he found an empty bed.

Only a blood-stained divorce agreement awaited his signature.

"Save Emma first."

Cole's answer came before Dr. David finished explaining the choice.

Blood soaked the white dress beneath me and ran over the edge of the gurney. At five months pregnant, I knew enough about my body to understand the hard, rhythmic tightening in my abdomen was not normal.

Our baby kicked once.

Weakly.

Across the emergency corridor, Emma lay on another stretcher with a bandage pressed to her forehead. She was conscious, talking, and squeezing Cole's hand.

"Alpha," David said sharply, "listen to the medical priority. Lyra has a placental abruption and active hemorrhage. She needs the trauma surgeon now. Emma has a possible subdural bleed on the preliminary scan, but her pupils are equal and her blood pressure is stable. We can repeat imaging while Lyra goes to surgery."

Cole did not look at me.

"Emma is human."

"That does not make her more urgent."

"She cannot heal like we can."

"Lyra is pregnant and losing blood faster than she can regenerate it."

David shoved two consent forms against Cole's chest. The pack hospital had one trauma surgeon available because the second team was responding to a highway pileup. One patient could go to the surgical suite immediately. The other would be stabilized until another surgeon arrived.

"Sign Lyra's form," David ordered. "Now."

Emma whimpered.

Cole turned toward her.

Thirty minutes earlier, the estate had been preparing for the winter charity dinner. I had spent the morning checking vendor invoices while Finn helped the kitchen staff set place cards. Emma drifted through the house complaining of headaches, refusing David's offer to examine her because she claimed hospitals made her anxious.

Cole believed every complaint.

When I mentioned that my back had been cramping since breakfast, he told me to lie down after the guests arrived. Five months pregnant, I had still been expected to keep the event moving. Emma, by contrast, received a chair if she sighed too deeply.

The imbalance had become so normal that I had stopped naming it.

Then the staircase turned it lethal.

Thirty minutes earlier, she had stood at the top of the marble staircase in our estate and complained she felt dizzy. I reached for her because I had spent ten years cleaning up the emergencies that followed Emma wherever she went.

Her hand closed around my ankle.

For one instant, her face changed.

No fear.

No dizziness.

Just calculation.

Then she pulled.

I hit the first landing on my hip. My abdomen struck the edge of a step. Emma tumbled after me, carefully twisting so her shoulder and forearm took most of the impact.

By the time the guards reached us, she was crying and I was bleeding.

Now she looked at Cole through wet lashes.

"My head hurts," she whispered. "Please don't leave me alone."

Cole gripped the pen.

"Cole." I forced his name through clenched teeth. "Our baby."

He glanced at me at last.

His eyes dropped to the blood beneath my gurney.

I saw hesitation.

Then Emma gasped and squeezed his wrist.

"I can't see clearly."

David checked her pupils again. "No change. Alpha, this is exactly why I am telling you not to diagnose by panic."

"What if the scan missed a bleed?" Cole snapped.

"Then we repeat the scan. Lyra does not have time for another test."

I reached toward him.

"Please."

Finn stood behind Cole, pale and shaking. Our adopted ten-year-old son had ridden in the ambulance with us. He stared from my blood-soaked dress to Emma's bandaged forehead.

"Dad," he whispered, "Aunt Emma doesn't have a wolf. Mom does."

My heart dropped.

Cole looked at him.

"Exactly."

"No," David said. "Not exactly."

Cole signed Emma's form.

The scratch of pen against paper sounded louder than the monitors.

"Prep Emma for the trauma suite," he ordered.

David stared at the signature.

"You are prioritizing the stable patient against medical advice. I am documenting that."

"Document whatever you want. Save her."

Two nurses rushed Emma toward the surgical elevator for repeat imaging and possible intervention.

Cole walked beside her stretcher.

Finn followed.

Neither moved toward me.

I grabbed Cole's sleeve as he passed.

"She pulled me down."

He looked at my hand on his coat.

"Not now, Lyra."

"She did it on purpose."

Emma began crying louder.

Cole peeled my fingers from his sleeve.

"You are in shock. Stop turning an accident into another attack on Emma."

"Cole, if you walk away—"

"You're a werewolf. David will stabilize you until the second surgeon arrives."

David swore under his breath.

The elevator doors opened.

Cole stepped inside with Emma.

Finn hesitated at the threshold.

For one second, I thought he would come back.

Then Emma reached out from the stretcher.

"Finn?"

He took her hand and entered the elevator.

The doors closed.

A contraction seized my abdomen so violently I screamed.

David shoved my gurney toward the secondary treatment bay.

"Get obstetrics down here! Call the city hospital and tell them I need their surgeon transferred by air."

"The baby," I gasped.

He pressed a Doppler probe against my stomach.

The heartbeat flickered through the speaker.

Fast.

Then slower.

"Stay with me, Lyra," David said.

I stared at the closed elevator where my mate and son had disappeared with another woman.

The fetal rhythm dropped again.

David's face changed.

"We cannot wait for the second surgeon," he said to the nurse. "Open the backup theater. I am operating myself."

The last thing I heard before anesthesia pulled me under was the emergency alarm calling Cole back to the obstetric floor.

A nurse ran to the elevator and hit the call button three times. No one answered from the VIP level. David swore, shoved his own credentials into the backup-theater lock, and told the staff to proceed without Alpha stabilization.

The doors closed around me while the fetal heartbeat faded into static. I kept listening for Cole's footsteps until the anesthesia finally erased the sound, but he never came back.

He did not come.

He never returned.
