Chapter 1 of My Mate Carried His Ex From Our Ceremony

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of three hundred wolves who wouldn't meet my eyes.

I stood at the altar with my neck bared, Easton's hand warm around mine, the officiant's voice weaving the marking vow into the charged air. The ceremonial candles threw shadows across the assembled pack. I could smell pine resin and anticipation. My heart beat steady. Three years of waiting, and tonight the bond would finally be complete.

Then Milena collapsed.

She went down at the altar's edge, convulsing, one hand clawing at her throat. The sound she made—a wet, choking gasp—cut through the officiant's words like a blade through silk.

"Wolfsbane," she managed. Her voice was barely a whisper, but it carried.

Easton's hand left mine.

No hesitation. No glance back. He crossed the three steps between us in a single motion, dropped to his knees, and gathered her into his arms. Her head lolled against his chest. He murmured something I couldn't hear, his mouth against her hair.

I stood there with my hand still extended where his had been, neck still bared for a mark that wasn't coming, and watched my mate carry another woman out of our ceremony.

Three hundred wolves watched me watching him.

No one moved toward me. No one spoke. The officiant's mouth hung open mid-syllable. The candles kept burning. Somewhere in the back rows, someone coughed.

I lowered my hand. The half-formed bond on my neck—the faint warmth that had been building all evening in preparation for the mark—went cold. Not absent. Just cold, like metal left out overnight.

I turned and followed him.

The healer's wing smelled like antiseptic and mountain ash. I found them in the third examination room: Easton cradling Milena on the table, her parents arriving in a rush of coordinated tears, their voices high and grateful and aimed directly at him.

"She's breathing," Easton said, not looking up. His hand smoothed her hair back from her forehead. "She's okay. She's going to be okay."

Milena's mother sobbed something about poison and thank the Goddess he'd been there. Her father gripped Easton's shoulder, his face crumpling. "You saved her. If you hadn't—"

"I've got her," Easton said. His voice was rough. "I'm not letting go."

I stood in the doorway. He still hadn't looked at me.

Rhea, the head healer, moved toward the table with a vial of counteragent. Easton snarled—an actual snarl, teeth bared, Alpha tone threading through it—and she froze mid-step.

"Don't touch her," he said.

Rhea's eyes flicked to me. I saw the question there. I had no answer.

"Easton," I said quietly. "Can you step outside for a moment?"

He didn't look up. His hand kept smoothing Milena's hair in long, repetitive strokes. "Not now."

"I need to speak with you."

"Later."

Milena's mother turned toward me, her face streaked with tears. "Luna, please. She almost died. He needs to stay with her."

I looked at the woman whose daughter had just destroyed my ceremony. I looked at Easton, whose hand was still in her hair. I looked at the examination table where I should have been standing beside my mate, not watching him hold someone else.

Something inside my chest went very still.

Not empty. Not broken. Just still, like water before it freezes.

"Easton," I said again. My voice came out flat. "Look at me."

He finally did. His eyes were wild, his Alpha authority crackling in the air around him. "She almost died, Bethany. She was convulsing. There was foam at her mouth. Do you understand? She almost died."

"I understand," I said.

"Then you understand why I can't leave her right now."

I looked at him. At the man I'd spent three years managing a pack house for, hiding my allergies for, suppressing my scent for. The man who had never once asked why I avoided the rare steak at pack dinners. The man who was supposed to mark me tonight and instead was cradling another woman while three hundred wolves waited in the ceremonial hall for a Luna who no longer existed.

"You're fine," he added, almost as an afterthought. "You're standing. You're fine."

The cold spot on my neck spread. Not painful. Just cold, and getting colder, like something inside me was closing a door I hadn't known was open.

Inside my chest, where my wolf had been silent for as long as I could remember, I felt something shift. Not a voice. Not yet. Just a presence, waking up, paying attention.

I pressed my thumb against the underside of my wrist. My pulse was steady.

"I, Bethany," I said clearly, "reject you, Alpha Easton of the Nightveil Pack, as my mate."

The bond didn't break. It tore.

I felt it rip through me like silver wire pulled from a wound—hot, then cold, then nothing. The half-mark on my neck went from cold to hollow, an empty space where something had almost been. Easton's head snapped up, his eyes going wide, his mouth opening on a sound that might have been my name or might have been his wolf howling.

I didn't stay to find out.

I turned and walked out of the healer's wing, through the ceremonial hall where three hundred wolves were still waiting, past the altar with its burning candles, out the main doors of the pack house and into the night.

I was wearing the white ceremonial gown. I had no coat. No phone. No keys.

I kept walking.

Behind me, through the open doors, I heard Easton roar my name. I heard footsteps. I heard the Alpha tone in his voice, the command that should have stopped me mid-stride.

I kept walking.

The forest border was half a mile ahead. Silvercrest territory lay just beyond it. I had no plan. No destination. Just the cold hollow space on my neck and the strange, watchful stillness inside my chest where my wolf was finally, finally awake.
