My Husband Skipped My Mother's Funeral for His First Love Summary

The hardest goodbye of Lily's life happens without her husband Nathan by her side. Chapter 1 of My Husband Skipped My Mother's Funeral for His First Love

I sat on the edge of the couch, my fingers tracing the armrest until they ached. The clock on the wall read four in the morning, but sleep had long since left me. Mother’s passing had happened too soon, her breathing shallow in the hospital bed before the final breath took her. Nathan stayed with me, his presence steady in the dim light of the living room lamp.

He answered the phone when it rang, his voice calm as he explained that I needed time. “She’s not ready for this yet,” he told the caller each time, then set the phone aside and brought me a glass of water from the kitchen. His steps were quiet, careful not to startle me. At one point he reached for the small wooden box on the table and opened it. Inside lay the Brooks family ring, the one from our wedding that had slipped off my finger years ago. He picked it up, turned it over in his palm, and slid it back onto my hand without a word. The metal felt cool at first, then warmed quickly against my skin.

“Tomorrow, no matter what happens, I’m there,” he said, his hand covering mine. His thumb brushed once across the ring’s edge.

I nodded, though my throat tightened. Nathan had always shown up for the big things. Eight years of marriage and he had missed nothing essential. He had sat beside me at the hospital when Mother needed someone, had held my hand through the worst news. I didn’t ask him to do more than sit in the first row and wait. That was all I wanted.

The hours dragged on. I kept checking the clock, each minute stretching the silence. When the first gray light touched the window, I stood and walked to the window, staring out at the empty street. Nathan followed, his arm brushing mine lightly.

The funeral service was scheduled to start at three sharp. I drove alone to the church, the radio off so I could focus. The parking lot filled with cars. I sat there for a moment with the engine off, staring at the church entrance. The group chat notification popped up on my phone before I even reached the front door. I opened it, expecting messages from friends offering condolences. Instead, photos filled the screen. Bella lay in a hospital bed, her face pale but her eyes open. Nathan sat beside her, his arm resting lightly on the blanket that covered her shoulders. The blanket was gray-blue, hand-knit, with a pattern that matched the one Mother had finished the week before she died. I recognized the crooked stitch at the corner where I had helped her pull the yarn too tight earlier that year.

My stomach tightened. I dialed Nathan’s number. He answered after the second ring.

“I saw the photos,” I said. My voice came out sharper than I intended. “Why are you there? With her?”

The background noise sounded faint, like the hum of hospital equipment. “The hospital’s cold,” he said. “I left the blanket in the car so I could keep her warm. She woke up shaken after the crash. Doesn’t want anyone else. Needs me right now.”

I gripped the phone tighter. “Why aren’t you coming to the funeral? It starts at three. You could be here instead.”

He paused. The silence stretched between us, filled only by the distant beep of monitors. “Your mom is already gone, Aria. Bella is still here. I can’t leave her when she needs someone most.”

The words landed like stones. I stared at the phone, my throat closing. Grant’s message appeared next in the chat, short and direct: Don’t make a scene. We can have a memorial later. The casual tone made my blood boil. I didn’t reply. I locked the phone and walked inside.

The moment I stepped inside, the emptiness hit me. Nathan’s nameplate sat on the chair in the front row, right where it belonged. The ushers waited, their hands folded neatly. One of them stepped forward.

“Ma’am, do you want to wait another five minutes? The service hasn’t started yet.”

I shook my head. “No. Go ahead.”

The organist began a soft hymn. Guests filled the pews behind me, but the front remained open. I kept my eyes on the altar, refusing to look at the empty chair. When the pastor began the opening prayer, the silence felt louder than any words. I gripped the edge of my seat, my nails digging into the fabric. Why was he not here? The question looped in my mind, but I pushed it down. He would walk in any second, apologetic and ready.

The pastor continued. I sat back down, my hands folded in my lap so tightly the knuckles whitened. The nameplate still sat there, untouched. I reached over and flipped it over, the cardboard sliding smoothly against the wood. The name disappeared from view, and the seat next to it became available for someone else. The small motion felt final, like a door closing. I didn’t explain it to the woman sitting nearby who looked at me curiously. Let her wonder. I had waited long enough.

The service moved through the readings and prayers. When it came time for the eulogy, the pastor looked toward the front row. “If Nathan Brooks is here, we’d love to hear a few words.” No one moved. The pastor cleared his throat and kept going. I stayed seated, my hands still in my lap, but something inside me shifted. He was not coming. The realization settled over me like cold water. I would read it myself.

When the pastor called me forward, I walked to the front, my shoes silent on the carpet. I didn’t speak to anyone about Nathan’s absence. I simply stepped up and began the eulogy, my voice steady even as the words caught in my throat. “Margaret lived with grace, even in her final days. She cared for everyone around her until the end. Today we honor her kindness, her strength, and the way she loved each of us.” My eyes stayed on the casket. I didn’t add any line about how sorry he was or how he would have been there. The words were mine now.

After the final amen, the congregation stood. When the time came to move the casket, I stepped forward and took one corner of the stand, my fingers steady as I helped lift it. No one asked for Nathan’s help. I didn’t explain why he was missing. I simply held on and walked beside the casket out the door.

Before we left for the cemetery, the church door opened and Theo stepped out. He wore a black suit that fit him perfectly, his hair neatly combed back. In his hand he held a single white camellia flower, Mother’s favorite. He looked around at the small group of people already gathered, his expression uncertain.

“Am I too late?” he asked, his voice low.

I shook my head. “For the service. Not for the graveside. You’re the first one here.”

He blinked, surprised. I knew he had stayed away from family events for six years, but Mother had sent him a birthday card every year anyway. He hadn’t come for my brother or for me. He had come to send a message that no one had forgotten him. He waited until we reached the gravesite. There he held the umbrella open for me against the light wind, then picked up the vase of flowers I pointed to and arranged them at the base of the stone.

The evening wore on. Guests left one by one, their condolences brief. I stood alone at the grave, the wind tugging at my coat. When the last car pulled away, Nathan’s pulled up last. He stepped out, his suit jacket slightly rumpled from the long drive. His eyes found me immediately. Behind me stood Theo, holding the umbrella he had set aside. Nathan’s gaze flicked to his brother, then to the stone marker in front of us. Something shifted in his expression. He reached for the small box in his pocket, but stopped when he saw what lay on the ground beside the flowers.

The Brooks family ring rested there, the one he had placed on my finger that morning. He took a step closer, his hand extending toward it.

“Leave it,” I said, my voice quiet but firm. The words hung in the air between us, cutting through the silence.
