Chapter 1 of My Husband Accused Me While His Mistress Watched

The West Los Angeles postpartum recovery center looked exactly like what it was: a clean, functional medical facility designed to be forgettable. I stepped through the sliding glass doors with my two-week-old twins in their carriers, my body still aching from childbirth, and immediately felt the weight of all I had left behind in this city. Two security guards—men I didn't recognize but who nodded to me with quiet professionalism—flanked the entrance. Enzo's doing, no doubt. He'd probably arranged their presence before my flight even landed.

At the front desk, a young woman with a practiced smile looked up my reservation. Her fingers tapped against the keyboard, and her expression shifted from professional courtesy to something approaching pity.

"Mrs. Lawson? I have your reservation here under..." she glanced down again, "...Mr. Adrian Cruz. It's one of our standard shared-floor recovery rooms. Let me just confirm the payment method—" she paused, her voice dropping slightly. "It looks like it was booked through a group-deal app? The total comes to twenty dollars a night, prepaid with a coupon code."

I felt my eyebrows rise slightly. Twenty dollars. The amount was so absurd I almost laughed. Adrian had always been cheap, but this was performance art. This was him saying, 'I'm still in control.'

"Is there a problem with the reservation?" I asked, my voice calm.

"No, not at all! It's just—" She hesitated, clearly wondering if she should say more. "The room is on the third floor. Shared hallway, shared kitchenette. The crib is... well, it's plastic. But very clean."

The disinfectant smell hit me the moment we reached the third floor. Industrial and sharp, it clung to everything. The room was exactly what I'd expected: beige walls, a narrow bed with thin sheets, a plastic crib pushed against one wall. A small window overlooked the parking lot. It was the kind of room designed for people who couldn't afford better, not for people who didn't know better.

I set the twins down carefully, my movements deliberate. Without a word, I reached into my purse and pulled out the matte-black card Enzo had given me before I left London. The weight of it felt reassuring in my hand.

"I'd like to upgrade," I said simply, walking back to the front desk. "To the penthouse recovery suite."

The woman's eyes widened. "The penthouse? That's... that's twenty thousand a week, Mrs. Lawson. Plus the private chef, the dedicated nurse—"

"I'm aware of the cost. Please run the card."

She swiped the card, her movements suddenly careful, as if the black plastic might shatter in her hands. The machine hummed, and the transaction went through without a hitch.

"Of course, Mrs. Lawson. The penthouse is on the top floor. I'll have someone show you up immediately."

The penthouse was everything the other room wasn't. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the Pacific sunset, painting the room in shades of gold and amber. A private chef waited in the kitchenette, his menu already tailored to my dietary needs. The twins' bassinets were hand-carved mahogany, draped with cashmere throws. Every surface gleamed with understated luxury.

I moved through the space with quiet confidence, adjusting a slightly off-center floral arrangement near the bassinets. My fingers traced the delicate petals, straightening them with the same precision I'd once used to correct Adrian's grammar in business emails.

That evening, I opened Instagram and took a photo of the sunset through the windows. The cashmere throw was visible in the foreground, the edge of a bassinet just barely in frame. I posted the story without a caption, without a tag. Just the image, speaking for itself.

In his car across town, Adrian stared at his phone. I could picture him perfectly—his jaw tight, his eyes narrowing as he tried to process what he was seeing. The penthouse. The view. The unmistakable markers of wealth that dwarfed anything he'd ever been able to provide. His first instinct wouldn't be curiosity. It would be offense.

In London, Enzo sat in his study, his secondary phone glowing with the same image. His fingers drummed against his Patek Philippe as he made a call to his legal team. "Audit everything," he said, his voice low and controlled. "Every asset, every account. By morning. And get someone on the ground at that center. She's handling this herself... for now. But if he touches her..."

He didn't need to finish the sentence.

Sophie Chen, the head concierge of the penthouse floor, knocked softly on my door. "Mrs. Lawson, I'm Sophie. I'll be your personal concierge during your stay. If you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to call."

Her smile was warm, but her eyes were sharp. She'd already pieced together the story—the borrowed-name reservation, the black card upgrade, the quiet confidence of a woman who was done apologizing. She'd make sure my floor stayed secure, and she'd be watching the lobby cameras with more than professional interest.

I nodded, returning her smile. "Thank you, Sophie. I appreciate your discretion."

As she left, I turned back to the window. The sun had fully set now, leaving only the city lights glittering below. Somewhere out there, Adrian was rewriting his text message for the twelfth time, trying to find the right words to confront the woman he thought he still controlled. And somewhere across the ocean, Enzo was waiting, his patience a thin veil over his possession.

The game had begun.
