Chapter 1 of My Groom Left Me at the Altar for My Sister

The mirror in the staff room was cracked in the corner, a hairline fracture nobody ever fixed. I stood in front of it anyway, in my gown, because it was the only mirror I had.

The dress was ivory silk, simple through the bodice, no lace, no tulle. I picked it myself, from a rack Lauren didn't approve, in a shop Lauren didn't choose. It was the one thing about this wedding that belonged entirely to me.

I pressed my thumb against the edge of my thumbnail until the skin went white. It was a habit. It kept me steady.

He spoke to me like I was a person, I thought. That was the whole fact. I'd built ten years on it, and I was allowed to have it, just this once, on this morning.

No one came to zip me. No one came to do my hair. I did it myself, the way I'd done most things myself since I was six years old, and then I called a car and rode to St. Bartholomew's alone.

The church was already full when I arrived. Three hundred people I mostly didn't know, dressed better than the room needed. I stood in the vestibule and waited for my cue, the way I'd waited for things my whole life — without complaint, because complaint had never once gotten me anything.

Twenty minutes before I was supposed to walk, I saw Conrad through the crack in the anteroom door. He was looking at his phone. I knew his face by then — I'd had a decade to memorize it, the cut of his jaw, the stillness he wore instead of feeling — and I watched that stillness break.

He didn't come tell me. He just left.

Tyler went after him — dark suit, easy stride, the same boy who used to carry my books up four flights of stairs in the Bronx, except now his loyalty pointed somewhere else. Then Patrick, my father, a man I still didn't know how to address without hesitating. Then Lauren, my mother, moving fast for a woman who never moved fast, her heels sharp against the stone.

The doors opened onto gray Midtown light. I stood at the top of the aisle in my dress, veil down, and watched every person who was supposed to be mine walk out to go find Sabrina instead.

Sabrina Reed. My sister, if that word still meant anything. She'd posted one line twenty minutes earlier — *I'm sorry. I can't do this anymore.* — and turned her phone off. I hadn't even seen it yet. I found out the way everyone else did, by watching the room empty.

The live stream kept running. I could see the little red dot on the camera at the back of the church, blinking, patient, recording every second I stood there not sitting down.

Ninety-one minutes. I know because I counted them, one press of my thumbnail at a time, until the half-moon mark went white and stayed white. Three hundred people whispered and checked their phones and did not leave. I didn't sit. I didn't lift my veil. Waiting without complaint was the only skill I had ever been rewarded for, so I did it, in front of everyone.

When Conrad came back, he came back alone, and he came back wrong.

He'd found her at a hotel three blocks away, curled on a bed she'd booked three days before. I didn't know that yet. All I knew was the look on his face walking down the aisle toward me — quiet, cold, worse than shouting.

"You did this," he said.

"I've been standing here the whole time," I said. "I didn't do anything."

He slapped me hard enough that the marble came up to meet me.

The floor was freezing under my palms. Somewhere behind me a glass of Bordeaux was already in his hand — someone's table, someone's toast — and he poured it slow, down the front of my dress, watching it bloom dark across the silk.

"So you match the scene you made," he said.

From the third pew, Lauren's voice, flat and clear enough to carry. "Get up. You're embarrassing the family."

I got up. Patrick was already talking to the videographer, low and firm — a man named Julian, I'd learn later — telling him to delete the footage. Julian nodded. He didn't delete anything.

I walked out of that church by myself, the way I'd walked in.

The rain started somewhere around eight. I sat on the steps because I had no phone charger and no car and nowhere anyone was expecting me. My dress had gone the color of a bruise. My face was doing the same.

My phone rang at 9:40 with four percent battery left. Beacon Memorial Cancer Institute, Boston.

"Ms. Reed, we have your biopsy results," the voice said. "It's confirmed — Stage I invasive ductal carcinoma. We'd like to schedule surgery within the next six weeks."

I sat very still on the wet stone and said, "Okay."

There was no one to call. I stayed until the sky went from black to gray to something almost like morning, the rain soaking through what was left of the dress, my thumbnail pressed white under my thumb, holding the only fact I had left.
