Chapter 1 of My Ex-Husband Buried My Mother's Jade With His Mistress

I step off the plane at JFK and breathe in recycled airport air. It smells like coffee and floor cleaner and thirty years of distance collapsing into nothing. My heels click against the polished terminal floor. I keep my pace steady. I don't look around like a tourist. This city used to be mine.

The car service driver holds a sign with my name. He takes my bag. I slide into the back seat and watch Manhattan rise up through the windshield as we cross the bridge. The skyline has changed. New towers. Different lights. But the bones are the same.

The rental suite is on the Upper East Side. Eighteenth floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows facing south. I set my purse on the marble counter and walk to the glass. The city spreads out below me—traffic and construction and a million lives I will never know. I used to live here as someone else. A girl who believed in promises. A wife who signed away everything because she thought love meant surrender.

I reach up and touch the pendant at my throat. Cool jade under my fingertips. My mother pressed it into my hand the last time I saw her. She said, 'This is yours. It's proof that you come from women who survive.'

I believed her then. I believe her now.

I unpack slowly. Hang my dresses. Line up my shoes. I have two days before the reunion. Two days to let the city remember I exist.

---

The Columbia alumni reunion is held in a private club in Midtown. Dark wood paneling. Soft lighting. A string quartet in the corner playing something I don't recognize. I arrive early. I always arrive early. I stand in the entryway and scan the room before I enter. Old habit.

There are faces I remember and faces I don't. People who were young with me once. Now we're all older. Some of us look it more than others.

Edith Rowe spots me from across the room. She cuts through the crowd like she's parting water. Same sharp eyes. Same no-nonsense walk. She pulls me into a hug that smells like expensive perfume and decades of friendship.

'You look exactly the same,' she says into my ear.

'Liar,' I say back.

She pulls away and grins. 'Fine. You look better. Richer. Terrifying.'

'Good.'

She lowers her voice. 'He's here tonight.'

I don't ask who. I don't need to.

'I know,' I say.

Edith studies my face. 'Are you okay?'

'I'm fine.'

She squeezes my hand once. 'If you need an exit, I'll fake a heart attack.'

'I won't need an exit.'

She nods. She believes me. She's the only one who never believed his version of our marriage.

I take a glass of wine from a passing waiter and move into the room. I don't hide. I don't avoid. I stand near the window and let people come to me. Some do. They ask polite questions. What have you been doing? Where are you living now? I give polite answers. London. Business. Yes, I'm doing well.

I see him before he reaches me.

Dereck Armstrong. Silver hair. Tailored suit. The same easy smile he used to practice in the mirror. He walks toward me like we're old friends. Like we share something warm and uncomplicated.

'Carolina,' he says. My name in his mouth sounds wrong.

I turn to face him. I don't smile.

'Dereck.'

He stops a foot away. Close enough to be intimate. Not close enough to touch. He's learned that much.

'You look incredible,' he says. 'I heard you were coming tonight. I couldn't believe it. After all these years.'

I take a sip of wine. I don't answer.

He doesn't seem to notice. He never did.

'I've thought about you,' he says. His voice drops. Rehearsed sincerity. 'So many times. I've thought about what we had. What we could have been.'

I watch him the way I'd watch a stranger on a flight. Polite. Detached. Waiting for him to finish.

'Fate brought us back together,' he continues. 'Don't you think? After all this time. It has to mean something.'

I set my glass down on the windowsill.

'It doesn't,' I say.

He blinks. The smile falters. Then he does something I don't expect.

He drops to one knee.

The room goes quiet. Conversations stop mid-sentence. Heads turn. The string quartet keeps playing but it feels like even they're holding their breath.

Dereck pulls a small box from his jacket pocket. He opens it. Inside is a ring I recognize. The same one he gave me thirty years ago. The one I left on the kitchen counter the day I signed the divorce papers.

'Carolina Greene,' he says. Loud enough for everyone to hear. 'You were the one who got away. I've spent thirty years regretting what I lost. You never remarried. I never stopped thinking about you. I know now what I didn't know then. You're the love of my life. Will you give me another chance?'

I look down at him. I feel nothing. No anger. No sadness. Just the faint, familiar weight of my mother's ring on my right hand.

Before I can answer, the door to the private dining room slams open.

A woman in a tight black dress strides in. Mid-twenties. Blonde. Furious.

'Are you kidding me?' she shouts.

Cali Armstrong. Dereck's daughter. The living proof of what he did to me.

She points at me. 'You're pathetic. A dried-up old woman embarrassing herself chasing a man who outgrew you decades ago. He doesn't want you. He never did. You're just a sad memory he's too polite to forget.'

The room is frozen. Every eye on us.

I look at Dereck. Still on one knee. Still holding the ring. Still performing.

I look at Cali. Red-faced. Shaking. Terrified of something she can't name.

I step forward.

And I slap Dereck Armstrong across the face.

The sound cracks through the room. My mother's ring leaves a mark on his cheek. Red and rising.

I reach for the glass of ice water on the table beside him. I lift it slowly. Deliberately. I pour it over his head. It runs down his face. Soaks his collar. Drips onto the floor.

I lean down. Close enough that only he can hear.

'I never thought about you once,' I say.

Then I straighten. I look at the room. At the faces staring. At Edith grinning by the bar.

I speak clearly. Calmly. Loud enough for everyone.

'Dereck Armstrong cheated on me with his mistress while we were married. He brought her into our home. He got her pregnant. He handed me divorce papers and took everything I signed away because I was too heartbroken to fight. Then he married her. And now he's here, on his knees, pretending he's been pining for me for thirty years.'

I pause.

'He hasn't. He's been pining for himself.'

I walk toward the door. I don't look back.

I hear Cali's voice behind me. Shrill. Desperate.

I don't stop.

I step into the hallway. The door closes behind me.

I breathe.

And I smile.
