Chapter 1 of My Billionaire Boyfriend Let His Fiancée Ruin My Hands

Thirty hours into a shift that started with a gunshot wound and ended with a kid who coded twice on my table, I finally sat down on the third-floor stairwell of Mount Sinai and let my body remember it was tired. My scrubs were stiff with someone else's blood, dried brown at the cuff. I hadn't eaten since yesterday. I pulled out my phone to text Lucian — *survived, coming home, don't wait up* — the kind of text I'd sent a hundred times in three years, and my screen was already lit up with something else.

A headline. Trending, the little flame icon next to it.

*Mendez Grand Heir Lucian Mendez Engaged to Carlson Capital Heiress Milan Carlson.*

I read it twice before the letters meant anything. Then I saw the photo, and the letters didn't matter at all.

He was wearing the navy suit I'd picked out for him at Bergdorf's, the one I'd told him brought out his eyes at a dinner he said was "a work thing, boring, don't worry about it." His hand sat low on her back, fingers spread, familiar in a way that made my stomach drop through the concrete stairs. And on Milan's finger — my Milan, my roommate since we were nineteen, the girl who cried into my shoulder over every bad date for a decade — was a ring I recognized down to the setting. Emerald cut, rose gold, a small chip in the band he'd once shown me on his phone screen at two in the morning. *A family piece,* he'd said. *For later. For you, eventually.*

I sat very still on the cold metal stair. My hands, still gloved in dried blood at the knuckles, didn't shake. That was the strange part. I'd spent three years being good at staying calm while things bled out in front of me. Apparently that skill worked on my own life too.

My phone rang before I could put it down. Milan's face lit the screen, the two of us laughing at some rooftop bar, both of us younger.

"Aspyn! Oh my God, did you see it, tell me you saw it—" She was breathless, giddy, the kind of happy that fills up a whole phone line. "I wanted to call you the second the release went out, you're literally the only person I trust to plan this with me. You have to be my maid of honor. You *have* to. You're the only family I have, Aspyn, I mean it."

I opened my mouth to say something true. Nothing came. Three years of silence had trained my throat a specific way — it knew how to hold things in, not push them out.

"Of course," I said. "Congratulations, Milan."

She squealed. I sat on the stairwell in my bloody scrubs and listened to my best friend plan a wedding to my boyfriend, and I told myself I would deal with it later, the way I'd told myself that for three years about everything.

He came to my apartment at two in the morning. I heard the key in the lock — his key, the one he'd had cut without asking me — and smelled the scotch before I saw him.

"Aspyn." He said my name like an apology already spent. "Let me explain before you decide anything."

"I saw the ring, Lucian."

"It's a merger." He said it fast, like the word itself was armor. "The board's been circling Carlson Capital's offshore accounts for two years — we need the collateral, we need the name attached to the deal, and Victor Carlson will only sign if his daughter's the one standing next to me at the signing dinners. It's paper. A contract. I'll have it dissolved within the year, I swear to you, and until then—" He reached for my hand. I let him take it, because some habits don't die just because you've decided they should. "Until then I need you to keep loving me the way you always have. Quietly. Just for a little while longer."

I looked at him — really looked, the way I look at a chart before I let myself feel anything about the person attached to it.

"Does Milan know about me?"

"No." He didn't blink. "No one knows. That's what's kept you safe this whole time."

I would learn later, precisely, that this was the first lie I could date. Not the only one. Just the first one I'd be able to point to and say: *there. That's where it started rotting.*

He left before dawn, the way he always did, like a man leaving the scene of something.

I sat at my kitchen table with coffee I never touched and opened my laptop out of habit more than intention. My inbox still had it — I'd never deleted it, three years old, sitting in an archive folder like a tooth I couldn't stop running my tongue over. *Dr. Jeremiah Mason, Fellowship in Reconstructive Surgery, London.* I read the offer once, the way you'd reread a door you walked past a long time ago, just to check it was still there.

Then I closed the laptop, put on clean scrubs, and went back to work, because that was the only thing in my life, that morning, that still made sense.
