Chapter 1 of My Best Friend Framed Me for Her Divorce

At 12:17 a.m., my best friend’s husband appeared on my doorstep with a suitcase, a signed divorce agreement, and snow melting in his dark hair.

Dean thought Celeste and I had planned it together.

He planted one hand beside my head and demanded to know how long I had been waiting for their marriage to fail.

The answer should have been never.

Ten years earlier, before Celeste knew either of us, Dean and I had spent six weeks restoring an abandoned mill and one night almost confessing everything.

Then he left for Boston, my mother got sick, and the life we might have had disappeared without ever beginning.

For six years, I watched my closest friend build the marriage I had once imagined, and I never crossed a single line.

Now the highway was buried under snow, every hotel room was full, and Dean had nowhere to sleep except my spare sofa.

When he opened the linen cupboard, an old black T-shirt fell at his feet.

His T-shirt.

The one I had kept for ten years.

Then Celeste texted me.

“I know you loved him first.”

“Now prove you still do.”

At 12:17 a.m., I stamped the final Christmas refund receipt and shoved it into the register.

North Star Bookstore was finally turning a profit, and I refused to let a single accounting error ruin my peace. I gathered my paperwork, ready to lock up the office, when the front doorbell buzzed. The sharp sound cut through the quiet of the empty shop. I grabbed my wooden clipboard, assuming the final guest for the upstairs bed-and-breakfast had finally braved the blizzard to arrive.

I unlocked the deadbolt and yanked the heavy oak door open.

Dean Gallagher stood on the snowy porch. A leather suitcase rested by his snow-covered boots. In his fist, he gripped a thick stack of crumpled papers. The bold heading caught the porch light: Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. Below the typed text, his wife Celeste’s signature slashed across the bottom line.

"How much did you help her plan this, Mara?" he demanded.

"Excuse me?" I blocked the threshold.

He stepped forward, forcing me to retreat a half-step. He planted his forearm against the doorframe, trapping me between the solid wood and his chest. The scent of cold wool and stale adrenaline rolled off him. His sudden proximity dragged me straight back ten years, right to the dusty scaffolding at Bellweather Mill, seconds before a kiss we never finished.

"Celeste handed me these, locked me out, and told me to go find the woman who waited for me for ten years," Dean said, his voice dropping to a harsh, accusatory rasp. "So tell me. What exactly is your role in my divorce?"

I slammed the edge of my wooden clipboard against his chest, shoving him back.

"Step away from me," I ordered.

He blinked, the anger fracturing, and stumbled back onto the snowy mat.

"I'm sorry," he muttered, dropping his arm.

"The last time I spoke to you privately was six years ago," I said, keeping the clipboard raised like a shield between us. "When I checked the 'chicken' option on your wedding RSVP. I have absolutely nothing to do with your marriage."

Dean dragged a hand over his face. "Then how does she know about us?"

"There is no us." I grabbed his coat sleeve, pulled him inside before the freezing wind wrecked my displays, and slammed the door shut. "We spent six weeks fixing a grist mill a decade ago. We loved each other, but we never started anything. You packed up for Boston. I stayed here to take care of my mother after her diagnosis. That is the entire story."

"But Celeste specifically mentioned ten years." Dean dropped the divorce papers onto the glass checkout counter.

"I met Celeste eight years ago," I replied, my voice sharp. "Long after you left Stowe. We had wine one night, and I told her I missed out on a guy once. I never gave her a name. I never gave her details."

Dean pulled his phone from his pocket and slid it across the glass. The screen glowed with a ride-share receipt.

"She changed the smart locks on our house while I was at work," he said. "She froze our joint accounts. And she ordered me a car. Your address was pre-entered as the destination."

I stared at the digital receipt. Celeste was actively framing me as the catalyst for her failed marriage.

I snatched the landline receiver from the wall and dialed the Mountain View Inn.

"Greg, it's Mara Whitmore," I said the second the line connected. "Do you have a single room left?"

"Sorry, Mara," the night manager answered. "The plows gave up an hour ago. We've got stranded skiers sleeping in the lobby."

I hung up and dialed the Pine Lodge.

"Booked solid," the woman on the other end said. "I-89 is shut down until morning. Nobody is getting in or out of town."

I slammed the receiver back onto the cradle. I dialed the third and final motel in Stowe, only to get a busy signal.

I turned back to Dean. He stood in the center of my bookstore, looking like a man who had just survived a shipwreck only to wash up on a hostile shore. I refused to be his lifeboat. I had spent years building a quiet, orderly life, and I would not let Celeste’s chaos swallow me.

I picked up my smartphone, flattened the divorce papers on the counter, and snapped photos of every single page.

"What are you doing?" Dean asked, stepping closer.

"Sending these to Priya, my lawyer," I said, hitting send. "Establishing a paper trail that I am not hiding you, harboring you, or conspiring with you."

"Mara, I don't think you orchestrated this."

"I don't care what you think," I snapped. I pointed to his luggage by the door. "The suitcase stays in the foyer. You sleep on the leather sofa in the reading room. We do not drink. We do not touch. We do not discuss 'what ifs' or anything else about Bellweather Mill. You leave the second the plows clear the highway."

Dean stared at me. His jaw tightened, a muscle feathering near his ear, before he gave a curt nod. "Understood."

"There are extra blankets in the hall closet," I told him, turning my back to organize the refund receipts.

Heavy footsteps sounded against the hardwood floor as he walked away. The closet door creaked open. I kept my eyes on the register, determined to ignore his presence. A rustle of fabric echoed from the hallway, followed by a sudden, heavy silence.

I stopped counting the receipts.

I turned around.

Dean stood by the open closet. He had reached for the quilt on the top shelf. In doing so, he had dislodged a folded piece of clothing.

It rested in his large hands. A faded, black T-shirt with the cracked white logo of the Bellweather Mill Restoration Crew. His shirt. The one he left behind in my truck ten years ago.

Dean rubbed his thumb over the cracked lettering. He lifted his head, his eyes locking onto mine with a sudden, piercing clarity.

"If I mean nothing to you, why did you keep this?" he asked.
