Chapter 1 of My Husband Gave My Heart to His Wife

My husband gave away the donor heart that was supposed to save me.

When the surgery was a success, the hospital lobby turned into a circus. Cameras everywhere. Reporters shouting questions. Flashing lights.

“Dr. Kale Ashford, we heard your wife has been on the transplant list for three years—”

He didn’t even let the reporter finish.

“As a doctor’s wife, she understands,” he said calmly. “She knows we always put the patient first. She agreed with my decision.”

Agreed.

Three months ago, he told me there was a problem with the donor heart. Said it wasn’t a match. Said I just needed to wait a little longer.

Wait.

Now my adopted sister, Silvia, stood beside him, pale but glowing, holding his hand like he was her hero.

“He saved my life,” she cried. “He didn’t just operate on me. He brought me home. He took care of me himself. I don’t know what I would’ve done without him…”

Yeah. He brought her home.

He moved me out of our bedroom for six months so she could “recover properly.” Said I could stay at my mom’s place because it would be “quieter.” My mom, who has always loved Silvia more than me anyway.

I watched them hug on that stage. They looked like something out of a movie. Perfect. Grateful. Close.

And I was just standing there, feeling this sharp pain crawl through my chest. Not just the sick kind. The lonely kind.

I tried to step away to take my meds, but a reporter grabbed my arm and pulled me onto the stage.

I wasn’t smiling. I couldn’t.

So my husband smiled for both of us.

Then he said it.

“After this, we’re making it official. Silvia is already family to us. My wife's family will adopt her legally. She’ll be my sister’s sister. My wife supports that too.”

Support? Wow.

Something cold spread inside me.

I took the mic.

“Now that you finally have Silvia you actually care about, I’ll leave. I don’t want to ruin your perfect little family.”

I dropped the mic and turned but he grabbed my wrist hard.

“Silvia needs long-term recovery,” he hissed. “Do you understand what you just did? The media is watching. The stress could affect her condition. Are you trying to hurt her?”

Hurt her?

I looked at him and felt like I was looking at a stranger.

My mom rushed over too. “There are cameras everywhere!” she whispered sharply. “At least pretend. Think about your image. Think about the hospital.”

Not once did they ask if I was okay.

Not once did they look at my face.

They pulled me back to the podium. Told me to apologize. Told me to stop embarrassing them.

The three of them stood there holding hands.

I stood a few steps away, like some crazy ex who had shown up uninvited.

Something inside me snapped.

I grabbed the framed photo the reporters had just handed him. The one with him and Silvia smiling after surgery. I threw it on the floor and stomped on it. Then I knocked over the award they gave him.

He looked at me like I was disgusting.

“I raised an ungrateful monster,” my mom said under her breath.

I laughed. It didn’t even sound like me.

“Ungrateful?” I asked.

“When my myocarditis got worse, you told me it was common. You told me to go to the ER alone and get an IV like it was nothing.”

“But when Silvia’s blood work changed a little, you called every top specialist you knew overnight.”

My voice was steady.

Too steady.

“I waited three years for a heart,” I said. “You told me to be patient. To be strong. To understand! But I didn’t know understanding meant giving my life away so she could have one.”

The whole room went quiet.

You could still hear the cameras clicking. Flash after flash. But nobody was talking anymore.

Kale tried to step in fast. “Marion, let’s talk about this somewhere private.”

“Private?” I laughed, but it came out ugly. Wet. My face was already soaked with tears and I didn’t even remember when they started falling. “Three years ago, when I was in the ER shaking because every heartbeat felt like someone was stabbing me from the inside… did either of you show up?”

Nobody answered.

“The doctor said I needed to be admitted,” I went on. “But you said beds were limited. You said I should give mine to someone worse.”

I looked at Silvia standing there beside them, looking small and fragile, holding my husband’s hand like she belonged there.

“Now I get it,” I said softly. “The ‘no beds available’ thing? You were just keeping one open for her. For the daughter who matters more.”

My dad rushed over and grabbed my wrist. “Enough,” he whispered through his teeth.

I pulled away from him like he burned me.

“And you,” I said, staring at him. “I’m your real daughter. Your blood. You knew my heart wouldn’t last another year. You knew. And you still agreed to give my matching donor heart to her.”

My voice cracked.

“Is she some secret child you both had and forgot to tell me about?”

Before I even finished, my mom slapped me.

Hard.

“You’ve lost your mind,” she snapped. “Apologize to Silvia right now.”

I tasted blood.

“Apologize?” I let out this broken laugh that didn’t sound human. “I’ve been in the ICU so many times I stopped counting. I was critical. I couldn’t even get a private room.”

I looked at my husband.

“Your colleagues offered to arrange one for me. They wanted to help. But you shut it down. You said we shouldn’t use connections just because I’m your wife.”

My chest felt tight but I kept talking.

“So why is it okay to bend every rule for her? She wasn’t even critical yet. But you moved mountains for her.”

I looked at all three of them.

My husband.

My mother.

My father.

All standing closer to her than to me.

“I don’t understand,” I whispered. “You’re doctors. You save lives. I was dying. Why did I have to step aside?”

Nobody answered.

They just looked at me like I was the problem.

“Fine,” I said. “Since you love her that much, just make her your real daughter. Replace me properly.”

I tried to walk away.

But suddenly my chest locked up.

It felt like someone squeezed my heart in a fist and didn’t let go. I couldn’t breathe. My knees went weak. I coughed and warm liquid filled my mouth.

Blood.

I remember the floor rushing up.

Then nothing.

When I opened my eyes, everything felt heavy. My chest was like stone. Every heartbeat hurt. Slow. Painful. Wrong.

There was glass between me and the hallway. I was in isolation.

I couldn’t move much, but I could hear voices outside.

Dr. Antonio . One of my mom’s colleagues.

He was speaking quietly, but not quiet enough.

“This collapse was from worsening acute heart failure,” he said. “With her dilated cardiomyopathy… even being optimistic, she has less than six months. If she has another episode like this…”
