Chapter 1 of My Alpha Heard Me Scream and Stayed Silent

The bond broke at 10:14 on my thirtieth birthday.

I know because I was still standing in the banquet hall when Lennox turned to me with flat eyes and said, "Yield the seat, Vivienne." Alpha tone. The command pressed into my skull like a thumb against soft fruit. My wolf—already dormant for ten years, already poured into his failing bloodline until there was nothing left to pour—went still in a way that felt like held breath.

I bared my neck. The entire pack watched. Megan Fisher, pregnant and smug, took the Luna's seat at the high table while I stood beside the wall with my fingers pressed against my mate mark. An old habit. Comfort I didn't deserve anymore.

Beneath Lennox's familiar pine scent threading through the bond, I caught something new. Jasmine. Sweet and foreign, woven through our connection like a second heartbeat.

My fingers went still against my mark.

The banquet emptied. Lennox disappeared toward his private quarters without a backward glance. I stood in the corridor and reached through the mind-link, my voice precise and quiet in the connection: *There is another woman's scent on the bond. Tell me I am wrong.*

A pause. Then he severed the link mid-sentence. The cut snapped through my skull like a severed nerve.

In the ringing silence, I knew. Avery Fisher. Megan's younger sister. The jasmine had been there for months, and I had been too well-trained in not-noticing to see it.

I was still standing there, fingers pressed to my mark, when I heard footsteps behind me.

Four rogues. No Ironvale scent. Megan leading them, her hand already reaching for my hair.

I opened my mouth to scream through the bond—Lennox would come, he had to come, Alphas protect their Lunas even when the bond is dying—but Megan slammed my face into the stone wall first. My vision went white. Hands wrenched my arms behind my back. Someone kicked my knees out and I went down hard, cheekbone cracking against the floor.

A young Omega couple rounded the corner. The male lunged forward. A rogue backhanded him into the wall so hard I heard ribs crack. His mate screamed. Another rogue grabbed her by the throat.

Megan knelt on my spine, grinding my chest into the stone. She wrenched my head sideways, exposing the left side of my neck. The mate mark. Sacred site. The place Lennox had bitten me ten years ago when I was young and stupid enough to think sacrifice was the same as love.

"Hold her," Megan said.

I felt the heat before I saw the brand. Silver-laced wolfsbane, glowing red in the dim corridor. The chemical-sweet smell of burning metal.

I screamed through the bond. *Lennox. Lennox, please—*

He was there. I felt him through the connection, present and aware and utterly still. Not unconscious. Not absent. Still.

Megan pressed the brand onto my mate mark.

The pain was white and total. It ate through skin, through the sacred bite, through the bond itself. I felt my wolf—already so quiet, already so small—lurch once in my chest and then go silent in a way that wasn't sleep. It was absence. A door closing in an empty room.

Through the bond, I felt Lennox. Not pain. Not alarm. Just—presence. And beneath it, layered like a second skin, jasmine. He was with her. Avery. Biting her neck at the exact moment mine was burning.

The brand lifted. Megan stood. My cheek was still pressed to the stone, my vision graying at the edges. The Omega couple was crumpled against the wall, the male cradling his mate's head. An off-duty Delta warrior staggered into view, took one look at the rogues, and lunged. They beat him down in seconds.

Megan crouched beside my head. "You're done," she said quietly. "He doesn't need you anymore."

I tried to reach for my wolf. The space where she lived was hollow. Dead air.

The last thing I saw before I lost consciousness was the Omega male, blood streaming from his nose, crawling toward me with one hand outstretched.

---

I woke in the healer's ward. Afternoon light slanted through the window. My neck was bandaged, the gauze already soaked through with something that smelled wrong—silver and ash and burned meat.

I reached for my wolf. Nothing.

I reached for the bond. Dead wire.

I lifted my hand to the bandage and pressed two fingers against the site. The mate mark was gone. In its place: scar tissue, silvered and wrong-textured, like something that had never been alive.

The door opened. Lennox stepped inside, his voice carefully modulated to concerned-Alpha warmth. "Vivienne. Thank the Goddess. I came as soon as I heard—"

He reached for my face.

I waited until his hand was an inch from my cheek. Then I said, flat and final: "I want the formal rejection spoken before the pack."

His hand stopped.

"No," he said. Measured. Reasonable. A man who had rehearsed this scene. "The Lycan Council's territorial inspection is three weeks out. Ironvale's pack aura requires a functioning Luna bond. I need you."

"You need me," I repeated.

"Legally tethered," he said. "Even—" He glanced at the bandage. "Even like this."

I turned my face toward the wall. My left hand, beneath the blanket, closed into a fist around the edge of the cot.

First anger I'd allowed myself since waking.

Lennox left. The door clicked shut.

I lay there in the dead silence of my wolf-hollow chest and thought: *He stood by. He felt me burn and he stood by.*

The next morning, Avery Fisher walked into my ward wearing Lennox's scent on her throat. Fresh bite mark displayed like a flag.

She didn't gloat. She explained.

"Lennox already petitioned the Lycan Council," she said, her voice light and easy. "Reclassified the rogues as external threats. You're the grieving Luna, he's the devastated Alpha, and the attack was never ours." She set a torn piece of fabric on my cot. Lennox's ceremonial shirt. Stained with both their blood. "He's already written the narrative."

She left.

I stared at the shirt. Then, with precise, unhurried hands, I folded it into the smallest possible square and slid it beneath my mattress.

Evidence.
