Chapter 1 of When My Husband’s Mistress Destroyed My Career and Marriage

The morning of our fifth wedding anniversary, I went to the fertility clinic alone.

Kieran had a meeting. Of course he did. Five years of these appointments, and he had never once sat in the waiting room with me. I told myself he was busy. I told myself a lot of things.

The receptionist smiled when she saw me. "Mrs. Boyd. Right on time."

I hated that name a little more every time someone said it. I didn't know why. Not yet.

They sent me down a side corridor to wait. The walls were soft cream, the lighting low. A water cooler hummed. I sat with my purse on my lap and watched the second hand on the wall clock move.

That was when I heard them.

Two nurses, just around the corner. Coffee cups. Laughter that wasn't trying to be quiet.

"Boyd again?"

"Mm. He paid for the new file last month. Same story. Low motility, blah blah."

"That man is healthier than my husband."

They laughed. One of them snorted into her cup.

"Five years of this. Five. Imagine being that wife."

"Don't. I feel sick for her."

"He's only doing it for that Morrison girl. Scarlett. She's back in the city, you know. Moved into the Park place last week."

"His real one."

"His real one."

I didn't move. I didn't breathe. I sat in that soft cream hallway and felt every bone in my body turn to glass.

Low motility. Blah blah. Five years.

Five years.

My hand was in my lap. I looked down at it.

The ring was small and clean. A platinum band, the way I liked. On the inside, two letters Kieran had engraved on our wedding day. He'd slid the ring onto my finger and whispered it like a secret meant only for me. Soul Mate. S. M.

I tilted my hand. The light caught the inside of the band.

S. M.

Scarlett Morrison.

I had been wearing her name for five years.

Something inside my chest gave a single, soft click. Not a break. Something quieter. A door closing.

I stood up. I put my hands in my coat pockets so they wouldn't shake. I walked out past the receptionist without looking at her, past the elevator, out the revolving door into Madison Avenue traffic, and flagged a cab.

The driver asked where to. I had to think about it.

"Lenox Hill. The private wing."

He nodded and pulled into the lane.

I knew Kieran's schedule. I had built it for him for three years before he hired an assistant. Tuesdays, ten thirty, his standing visit to a private hospital uptown. He'd told me it was a board meeting. He'd told me a lot of things.

The VIP floor smelled like lilies. Real ones. The kind you don't buy at a bodega.

I didn't go in. I stayed at the bend of the corridor and pressed my shoulder against the cold wall and looked.

Kieran was standing at the nurses' station in a charcoal coat I had picked out for him last winter. He was leaning down, smiling, with one hand braced on the counter. I knew that smile. I had never been on the receiving end of it.

"The whole wing," he was saying. "Anything she wants. If she likes the view from the south room, give her that one too."

The attending nodded fast. "Of course, Mr. Boyd. Although her chart only shows—"

"I don't care what her chart shows. She's been traveling. She's exhausted. I want her comfortable."

A cold. She had a cold.

Then he reached into his inside jacket pocket.

I knew the box before he opened it. Slim, dark blue, the gold hinge worn at the corner. His mother had pressed it into my hands across a dinner table two years ago. She'd held my fingers around it and said, very softly, This goes to the woman Kieran truly loves. I had cried into my napkin in the powder room afterward, because I thought she was telling me I was finally enough.

I watched my husband carry that box down the hall.

A door opened. I caught a flash of pale blonde hair, a pink silk robe, a thin wrist already lifting. Scarlett Morrison's voice was a soft, tired laugh. "Kier, you didn't."

"Hold still."

He knelt. He clasped the bracelet around her wrist himself. He lifted her hand and kissed the inside of it, right where the diamonds met her pulse.

She said something I couldn't hear. He laughed.

I turned around and walked back to the elevator. I did not run. I did not cry. I rode down forty floors with my hands in my pockets and my ring still on my finger, warm against my skin like a brand I had worn on the wrong side of my body for five years.

The penthouse was quiet when I came in. I had designed every inch of it. The light through the western windows was the exact color I had specified to the contractor. I sat at the kitchen island.

I looked at the clock on the oven. I waited eleven minutes. I'm not sure why. Maybe I needed to see if anything inside me would move. Nothing did.

Then I opened my laptop.

I drafted the divorce agreement first. Every clause clean, every loophole sealed, every asset accounted for. I knew his lawyers. I had dined with them. I wrote it the way I designed buildings, with no soft places for him to stand.

Then I wrote my resignation letter. Two lines. My signature.

I printed both. I drove to the firm. I laid them side by side on Kieran's desk, dead center, where he could not miss them.

Then I picked up the phone and started making calls.
