Chapter 1 of I Left the Family That Never Loved Me After I Lost My Baby

"Claire, why are you always so selfish?"

My husband's voice stopped me cold in the middle of the living room.

I stood there in my apron, six months pregnant, a dish towel still in my hand. The roast for his mother's dinner was in the oven. My ankles were swollen. My back ached.

And Adrian Kessler was looking at me like I was a stranger who had wandered into his house.

On the couch beside him sat Sophia Marlowe, his childhood friend. She had been staying with us for three weeks. Her face was pale, and she leaned against his shoulder like a wilted flower.

"Selfish?" I repeated. "Adrian, I've been in the kitchen since two o'clock."

"Sophia said you snapped at her."

"I didn't snap at anyone."

Sophia lowered her eyes. "It's okay, Adrian. I only reminded her not to touch my things. I didn't mean to upset her."

I stared at her. "Your things?"

"My tea set." Her voice was soft. "It belonged to my mother."

"You poured that tea on me." I held out the front of my blouse. A brown stain spread across the fabric over my belly. "It was still hot, Sophia. You did it on purpose."

Adrian didn't even glance at the stain.

"She has shaking hands, Claire. You know she's been sick."

"Her hands were fine when she poured it."

"Enough."

The word landed like a slap.

Sophia pressed her fingers to her lips. Her eyes went shiny. "Maybe I should just leave. I'm a burden here."

"You're not going anywhere," Adrian said, and his hand covered hers.

My son, Evan, was sitting on the rug with his Legos. He was seven. He got up, walked over, and stood beside Sophia's knee.

Not mine.

Hers.

"Mommy," he said, frowning up at me, "why are you always bullying Aunt Sophia?"

Something sharp went straight through my chest.

"Evan, honey, I'm not—"

"You yelled at her yesterday too." He crossed his little arms. "Aunt Sophia cried in the bathroom."

Sophia smoothed his hair. "Sweetheart, don't. Your mommy is just tired."

She smiled at me over his head.

It was a small smile. Nobody else saw it.

"I'm going upstairs," I said quietly.

"Mom's coming at six," Adrian said. "Don't make this a scene."

I set the towel on the arm of the chair and turned away.

Behind me, I heard Sophia whisper, "Adrian, I think she hates me."

And I heard him answer, "She doesn't get to hate you. Not in my house."

My house. Not ours.

I gripped the railing and climbed slowly. My belly felt heavy, and the baby kicked once, hard, like she was angry too.

"I know, little one," I murmured. "I know."

I reached the top step and paused to catch my breath.

Then I heard footsteps behind me. Light ones.

"Claire."

I turned my head. Sophia stood two steps below me, her face calm now. No tears. No trembling.

"What do you want?" I asked.

"I just wanted to say sorry." She came up one more step. "For the tea."

"You're not sorry."

She tilted her head. "No. I'm not."

The honesty startled me more than any insult could.

"Do you know what Adrian told me last night?" she went on. "He said he married you because you were convenient. Because you were already pregnant with Evan."

"Stop it."

"He said I was the one he really wanted."

"Get away from me, Sophia."

I turned toward the hallway.

That was when I felt her hands flat against my back.

One push.

My foot missed the edge. The world tipped sideways. I grabbed for the railing and caught only air.

I wrapped both arms around my stomach.

Then everything was pain.

The stairs hit my shoulder, my hip, my ribs. The ceiling spun. Somewhere far away, a child screamed.

"MOMMY!"

Evan.

Heavy footsteps pounded across the floor.

"Claire! Claire!"

Adrian's face hovered over me, white as paper. His hands shook as they touched my cheek.

"Don't move. Don't move. Somebody call 911!"

Warm wetness spread beneath me. I looked down and saw red soaking through my skirt.

"The baby," I gasped. "Adrian, the baby—"

At the top of the stairs, Sophia was sobbing loudly.

"I tried to catch her! She slipped! She just slipped, Adrian, I swear I tried!"

I wanted to scream. I wanted to tell him. But the pain swallowed every word.

The ambulance ride came in pieces. Sirens. A paramedic's gloved hand. Adrian's voice saying my name over and over.

At the hospital, under the bright lights, I heard Sophia again. She had come too.

"She was upset," she told a nurse through her tears. "She ran up the stairs too fast. I told her to be careful. She wouldn't listen to me."

"I didn't fall," I whispered. "She pushed—"

Nobody heard me.

Or maybe nobody wanted to.

When I woke up, the room was quiet.

My hand went to my stomach before my eyes even opened.

It was flat. Soft. Empty.

A doctor in a gray cardigan stood at the foot of my bed. Dr. Lindqvist, her badge said. She folded her hands.

"Mrs. Kessler. I'm so sorry."

I didn't say anything.

"The placenta separated from the impact. We did everything we could. But we couldn't save your daughter."

Daughter.

I had been right. It was a girl.

I waited for the tears to come. They didn't. I just stared at the ceiling tiles and counted them. Twelve. Thirteen. Fourteen.

"Do you have any questions?" Dr. Lindqvist asked gently.

"No," I said.

My voice sounded like it belonged to someone else.

She left. The door clicked shut, then opened again.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

His shirt was wrinkled. There was still a smear of my blood on his cuff. His face was gray, and his mouth opened like he was about to speak.

He didn't come in.

He didn't cross the room. He didn't take my hand. He just stood there, one hand on the frame, like the floor between us was something he didn't know how to walk across.

"Claire," he said finally.

I turned my face toward the window.

"Sophia's in the waiting room," he said. "She's really shaken up."

I laughed.

It came out short and dry, and it surprised both of us. His fingers tightened on the doorframe.

"What's funny?" he asked.

"Nothing," I said. "Nothing at all."

A small figure slipped past his legs. Evan. His eyes were red, and he clutched the hem of his shirt.

He came to the edge of the bed and peered at my stomach.

"Mommy?" he asked in a tiny voice. "Does this mean you won't have a little baby anymore?"

I looked at my son. The boy I had carried. The boy who had stood at Sophia's knee and called me a bully.

I closed my eyes.

I didn't answer him.

Behind my eyelids, everything finally went still. No anger. No hope. Just silence.

That day, I lost more than my baby.

I lost the last thing I had ever expected from this family.

And somewhere down the hall, I could hear Sophia crying. Loud enough for everyone to hear.

Loud enough to make sure they all believed her.

But I had felt her hands on my back.

And I would never forget it.
