Chapter 1 of His Rejected Luna: The Lycan King's Vengeful Mate

Audriana POV:

"I'm sorry, Ms. Sullivan, but Mr. Black's appointment was for half an hour ago."

The clerk's voice was polite, but his eyes held a pity I refused to acknowledge. I glanced at the sleek watch on my wrist. Thirty-two minutes. My fiancé -Gabe Black was thirty-two minutes late.

"He's on his way," I said, my voice smoother than I felt.

I stepped away from the polished walnut desk, the scent of lemon cleaner and old paper filling my nose. The North American Inter-Pack Alliance Registry Hall was designed to be imposing, with its marble columns and vaulted ceilings, meant to impress upon werewolves the gravity of the contracts signed here. Today, it just felt cold.

Around me, couples stood in quiet, reverent queues, waiting to register their sacred vows before the high clerks. The air conditioning ghosted across my bare arms, raising goosebumps.

"Ms. Sullivan?" The registry clerk offered a look coated in polite, agonizing pity. "If Alpha Black does not present himself within the hour, your scheduled window lapses. The next available binding docket is three months out."

"He had pack business at the perimeter," I lied smoothly, keeping my chin level and my hands motionless at my sides. "Give him ten minutes."

I stepped further away from the mahogany counter, the scent of lemon disinfectant and aged ledger parchment churning against the sudden, cold knot in my gut. I reached out with my senses, filtering through the humid cocktail of cheap aftershaves, dry champagne, and anxious sweat filling the hall. Gabe's scent was usually effortless to isolate-damp earth, pine needle resin, and the sharp edge of rain.

Nothing.

My phone vibrated in my silk-lined clutch. I pulled it out, expecting Gabe's hasty excuse. Instead, an unlisted number flashed across the screen:

VIP Lounge 3. End of the private corridor. See what your loyalty bought you.

I stared at the glowing font. Yet my wolf stirred beneath my ribs, hackles raised in silent warning.

I pushed through the frosted double doors.

A sickeningly familiar aroma slipped through the recycled air. Cherry blossoms. Cloying, artificial, and drenched in sweet vanilla musk.

Hailee.

My steps slowed. Hailee was my stepsister. Hailee was supposed to be waiting at the reception venue in Midtown, adjusting place cards.

Room 3's heavy redwood door stood open by half an inch. I approached without a sound, stopping just outside the frame.

"-she actually believes the Cayman accounts are untouchable," Hailee's breathy, melodic voice drifted through the gap, followed by a soft, mocking laugh. "She thinks she hid the 'Aura' design royalties behind seven shell companies. Gabe, darling, she's so blind."

"She's an arrogant fool," Gabe's deep baritone replied, heavy with smug satisfaction. "She always thought she was smarter than everyone in the pack. Once the binding rite is sealed today, the Beaumont family trust defaults to marital guardianship. Her assets, her corporate portfolio, her secret little Aura design earnings-everything transfers under Blackwater authority. She'll have nothing left to posture with."

"And then?" Hailee purred. The rustle of expensive silk followed.

"Then I lock her away in the northern estate to manage our domestic ledgers. And you and I run the pack together."

I stood motionless. The shock didn't paralyze me; it turned my blood to sub-zero slush. The Beaumont trust-my late mother's sole legacy. And Aura-the anonymous, multimillion-dollar high-jewelry persona I had spent four grueling years cultivating in absolute secrecy. They knew.

I did not flinch. With cold, mechanical precision, I reached into my pocket, tapped my phone screen, and activated the high-fidelity recording application.

Then I planted my heel and kicked the door open.

The heavy wood slammed against the interior stopper like a thunderclap.

On the velvet Chesterfield sofa, Gabe Black scrambled upright, his tailored suit jacket half-unbuttoned. Hailee shrieked softly, tumbling off his lap, her bare shoulders flushed pink and her lip gloss smeared.

"Audriana!" Gabe barked, panic flashing across his rugged features before hardening into defensive rage. "What the hell is this?"

I stood framed in the doorway, my spine a column of steel, my phone held loosely at my side, screen still quietly capturing the audio.

"Thirty-two minutes late to our binding registration," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register that cut through Gabe's rising pheromones. "And I find you plotting grand larceny with my stepsister. Please, Gabe. Enlighten me on which clause of the Pack Charter permits treason."

Hailee immediately sank onto her knees, eyes brimming with manufactured tears. "Audri, please... don't be cruel. We didn't plan this. The mate bond... it snapped into place between us last week. We were trying to find a way to spare your feelings!"

"Spare my feelings?" I gave a short, venomous laugh. "Is that what you call hunting down my offshore banking manifests?"

Gabe's expression tightened into stone. Realizing the pretense was shattered, his posture shifted. The predatory, domineering aura of an Alpha rolled off him, designed to force submission from weaker wolves.

"Enough," Gabe commanded, stepping between us. "If you know, it saves us the tedious performance. You were always too rigid, Audriana. Too calculating. A true Luna nurtures her Alpha; she doesn't hoard secrets and look down on him from her corporate tower."

"I built that tower while you ran your father's business into deficits," I fired back, not yielding an inch against his oppressive aura. "You are a parasite, Gabe."

Gabe's jaw twitched violently. The humiliation of being cornered eclipsed his greed.

"I, Gabe Black, Alpha of the Blackwater Pack," he intoned, invoking the ancient rites of severance, "formally reject you, Audriana Sullivan, as my destined mate and future Luna."

The words struck like an anvil dropped from the sky.

Even without emotional devotion left to give him, the biological machinery of the werewolf mate bond did not care about logic. A white-hot blade of agony cleaved through my sternum. Every nerve ending flared in screaming protest; my soul felt as though it were being ripped along a jagged seam. My vision blurred into static.

I bit my tongue until copper flooded my mouth. I dug my manicured nails into my palms, tethering myself to the agony.

"I, Audriana Sullivan," I rasped through blood-slick teeth, locking my gaze directly onto his widening eyes, "accept your rejection."

Snap.

The spiritual cord severed with an internal blast of silence. The ambient pain settled into a dull, hollow thrum. Hailee let out a breathless, triumphant sigh behind him.

I stopped the recording, pocketed the phone, and looked at them both as if observing roadkill on tarmac.

"Enjoy the scraps," I said quietly.

I turned on my heel and walked out, my footsteps rhythmic, measured, and resolute down the silent corridor.

The soul-rending ache made me stumble once as I reached the secluded northern exit archway. I caught myself against an antique Roman column, breathing through fractured ribs.

"A clean severance," a deep, velvety baritone murmured from the shadows of the alcove. "Messy execution, but admirable composure."

My head snapped up.

A man leaned against the marble masonry, enveloped in tailored darkness. He was tall, his broad shoulders commanding the narrow hallway, his features carved from aristocratic marble. But it was his scent that paralyzed me: ancient cedar, black pine, and the glacial ozone of an incoming blizzard. It wasn't the scent of a normal pack Alpha. It felt primal, vast, and terrifyingly sovereign.

He reached out, extending a heavy, matte-black card between two long fingers.

"Reach out when you're ready to rebuild," he said softly, his dark eyes burning with an unreadable, lethal luminescence.

I stared at the card. Embossed in silver were three words: Caden Sinclair.

Before I could speak, he stepped backward into the twilight shadows, vanishing as silently as a wraith.

Ten minutes later, I walked into my auxiliary corporate suite at the edge of the financial district. My body felt numb, operating on pure muscle memory.

Sitting behind the reception desk, my executive assistant Maya looked up.

Maya didn't ask a single question. She stood up, placed a steaming mug of black chamomile tea on my glass desk, and set a pristine linen handkerchief beside it.

"I rescheduled your four o'clock conference," Maya said, her voice a quiet, unshakeable anchor.

I rested my trembling fingers against the hot porcelain of the mug. In an empire of wolves waiting to strip my flesh from bone, I finally felt a flicker of warmth.

"Don't cancel the meetings, Maya," I said, my voice turning to razor wire.
