Chapter 1 of His Best Friend Was My First Love

My mother called sports rehab a hobby and stopped paying my tuition when I refused to quit.

Ethan Pierce gave me a spare key, covered one licensing fee, and told me I never had to prove my career to him.

So when I landed my first NBA job, I thought the man who had “saved” me would finally celebrate me.

Instead, he kissed my forehead, called my work “stretching rich guys,” and asked when Jace Monroe would be cleared to play.

I told him medical information was off-limits.

Hours later, Jace—the injured star assigned to me—mentioned that Ethan had already been asking people about his return date.

I went home early.

Ethan's shoes were by the door beside a pair of heels that were not mine.

I stopped outside our bedroom and opened the recorder on my phone.

“And if Lena finds out we're sleeping together?”

“She won't. She still thinks she owes me.”

“You said you'd leave her.”

“After she clears Jace and I get what I need.”

Ethan reached across the kitchen island and flipped my New York Sentinels staff badge facedown against the marble.

"Keep that out of sight at agency mixers," he said, tapping the plastic. "My partners might think I'm using my girlfriend to get close to the roster."

It was my first day as a physical therapist for a professional basketball franchise. I had spent years in classrooms, clinical rotations, and licensing prep to get there. Ethan had known exactly how much the job meant to me, yet congratulations had never made it into his morning vocabulary.

"I earned this job," I said. "I'm not hiding my credentials to make your business contacts comfortable."

He poured coffee and smiled as if I were being dramatic. "I know you earned it. I'm just saying optics matter. And let's not forget who gave you a place to stay and covered your licensing exam when your mother stopped helping with tuition. You don't have anything to prove to me."

I had repaid him every dollar of that exam fee within six months. Somehow, the debt still appeared whenever I wanted to make a decision he disliked.

I zipped my work bag. "Are we done?"

"Almost." He leaned against the counter. "When is Jace Monroe actually coming back?"

There it was.

"Player medical information is confidential. Return-to-play timelines included."

"Relax, Lena. I'm not asking for his chart." Ethan rolled his eyes. "Sponsors are planning campaigns. A rough date isn't a state secret."

"It's protected clinical information, and you already know my answer."

His mouth tightened for half a second before the easy smile returned. "Fine. Go stretch millionaires."

The Sentinels' training facility smelled of disinfectant, fresh-cut wood, and athletic tape. Dr. Priya Shah, the director of sports medicine, handed me a team tablet and walked me through the restricted rehab wing.

"Jace is your primary assignment for now," she said outside Treatment Room Three. "He has a talent for convincing people that pain tolerance equals medical clearance. It doesn't. Do not let the playoff calendar change your standards."

"Understood."

Jace Monroe sat on the exam table with his right foot planted on a foam pad. The All-Star guard looked far too comfortable for a man whose ankle had kept him out for three games.

"My sponsors need me back Tuesday," he said. "Drop the load restrictions and I'll buy the entire medical staff dinner."

I reviewed his strength numbers, deleted the unsanctioned progression he had typed into the notes field, and restored the approved plan.

"You can dislike the schedule," I said. "Your ligament doesn't negotiate."

His grin faded into something more attentive. He glanced at my badge. "Lena Hart. Straight shooter."

"Single-leg balance first. Then resisted dorsiflexion."

He obeyed for nearly thirty seconds before speaking again. "You know Ethan Pierce? Apex Agency?"

My fingers paused over the tablet.

"Why?"

"He has been asking people around the league when I'm returning. Asked one of my marketing guys whether I'd met you yet." Jace's expression sharpened. "I figured I'd tell you before it became your problem."

A cold weight settled behind my ribs.

"Thank you. Don't discuss your medical status with him. Or with anyone from his agency unless team communications clears it."

The door opened behind me.

Callum Reed stepped in, reaching for a playbook someone had left on the counter. The Sentinels' captain stopped so abruptly that the sole of his sneaker squeaked against the rubber floor.

Six years earlier, before graduate school and licensing boards, I had been a college freshman volunteering in the university sports medicine clinic. Callum was a twenty-year-old basketball star rehabbing an ankle under the athletic trainer's supervision. I logged his repetitions, fetched ice, and stayed late because he always found one more reason to keep talking.

By spring, he was my first real love even though we had never managed to give the relationship a clean label. He promised to call after an overseas tryout.

He never did.

I learned from a sports segment that he had signed a contract and left the country within forty-eight hours.

"Coach is waiting," Callum told Jace.

He looked at me only once, but recognition landed between us like a dropped weight.

Jace slid off the table. "You two know each other?"

"A long time ago," Callum said.

I logged Jace's final set. "You're done for today."

Jace collected his towel. "See you tomorrow, Lena."

Callum left with him without another word.

At four, my phone buzzed with a message from Ethan: "Client dinner. Won't be home tonight."

I stared at it longer than I should have. Then Marcus from basketball operations passed the desk and mentioned that Apex had canceled its afternoon meeting in the building next door.

Maybe Ethan's plans had changed. Maybe mine needed to.

I needed my personal laptop for a continuing-education module, so I returned to the apartment before dinner.

Ethan's loafers sat by the door.

Beside them were Brooke Vale's pointed black stilettos. I remembered them because Brooke, a sports-media host who moved through agency events like she owned the room, had worn the same pair at last month's mixer.

The bedroom door stood partly open.

"When are you going to dump her?" Brooke asked.

"Soon," Ethan replied. Fabric rustled. A zipper followed. "But not until I get what I need. If Lena stays on Monroe's rehab, I'll know his return date before the public does. I can package that for sponsors and new clients."

"And if she catches us?"

Ethan laughed. "She won't do anything. She still thinks she owes me for that exam fee."

I didn't open the door.

I took out my phone, started a voice memo, and stood in the hallway long enough to capture their conversation clearly. Then I saved two copies: one to encrypted cloud storage and one to an email draft.

At the dining table, I packed my laptop, passport, medication, lease documents, and the few valuables I couldn't replace. I left the furniture, the framed photos, and every gift Ethan had ever used as proof of his generosity.

Then I emailed the Sentinels' compliance office.

I wrote that my cohabiting partner had attempted to obtain protected player medical information, that I had refused, that I possessed evidence of his intent, and that I was ending the relationship immediately. I asked for instructions before my next shift.

I pressed Send.

Outside, the evening traffic moved in bright ribbons along the avenue. My hands shook only after the apartment door locked behind me.

Less than three minutes later, Dr. Shah replied.

"Report to the facility at 6:00 a.m. Do not contact Ethan about the disclosure. Bring the recording and every device you used for team work."

I read the message twice.

Then I booked a room under my own name and kept walking.
