Chapter 1 of The Day They Forced Me to Donate a Kidney, I Made the National Team

1: 1

The day the national team training-camp roster went up, Dad took me to the nephrology floor at the hospital.

My half-sister, Elisa Cooley, sat in a wheelchair, her face white as paper.

Clara Fox slid the tissue-typing report across the table to me.

This woman I'd called Mom for over a decade had nothing in her eyes now but the life of her own daughter.

"Chrissy, you and Ellie came back a match on the first screen."

"You're strong. You can live fine with one kidney. Save your sister first."

My boyfriend, Joseph James, stood by the payment kiosk, my ID clutched in his hand.

"There'll be other races. She can't wait."

I looked at them, and something in me broke loose into a small laugh.

So the body I'd trained into shape for over ten years was, to them, just a spare part for Elisa.

Down at the end of the hall, Dad was recording a voice message for the relatives.

"Ellie's saved. Her mom and I didn't match, but thank God there's still Chrissy."

Joseph was murmuring to her too, soothing.

"Don't be scared. Chrissy's been sensible since she was a kid. She won't leave you hanging."

I opened my phone. In the family group chat they'd already started forwarding the fundraiser link.

The title read: "Please help our poor daughter Elisa."

I deleted the ethics-consultation time they'd sent and answered Coach Lyons's message instead.

Since they wanted me to give up a piece of my body.

I'd give up this family first.

……

Coach Lyons's reply came back fast.

"Chrissy, are you confirming check-in?"

"If you're not with the team within forty-eight hours, the spot goes to the next athlete."

I stared at the screen, my fingertips gone stiff with cold.

Women's 400-meter hurdles, national team training camp.

My name was third on the list.

That place had taken me ten years to run for.

Ten years ago, I won my first city title.

Joseph stood outside the finish line, holding up his jacket to block the wind for me.

"Christine Swanson, when you make the national team someday, I'll carry the flag for you."

I believed him.

So when my knees ached past midnight and my ankles were wrapped in tape, I never once thought about stopping.

But now he stood in a hospital corridor, holding my ID, refusing to give it back.

The doctor set the report back on the desk.

"This is only a first-screen match. There's still detailed evaluation to come."

"A living donation requires the donor's full, willing consent, especially for a professional athlete. The risks and the recovery timeline both have to be weighed carefully."

Clara nodded quickly.

"She's willing."

"Our Chrissy's been sensible since she was little. She just hasn't come around yet."

I lifted my head.

"I'm not willing."

The corridor went silent all at once.

Elisa's tears fell first.

"Chrissy, I'm sorry."

"If I weren't dragging everyone down, you wouldn't be in this spot."

The second she finished, Clara dropped down and pulled her into her arms.

"Ellie, don't think like that."

"Your sister's strong. She'll recover fast."

Dad's face darkened too.

"Christine Swanson, family doesn't keep score this carefully."

I looked at Joseph.

He knew perfectly well that for this camp I hadn't even gone home for the holidays.

He knew too that after donating a kidney, I might never get back to the competitive shape I was in now.

But he just avoided my eyes.

"Chrissy, give Ellie some hope first."

"I'll be there for your recovery after."

So it wasn't that he didn't know the consequences.

He'd simply chosen the giving-up for me.

Clara reached for my phone.

"Stop looking at that."

"The hospital's set an ethics consultation tomorrow morning. You cooperate, all right?"

I stepped back.

"I won't go."

Dad slammed his hand against the back of the wheelchair.

"You wouldn't dare!"

Elisa flinched, and Joseph bent at once to steady her.

"Don't be scared."

When he raised his head, his tone was all reproach.

"Chrissy, don't set her off."

I was the one being lined up to give up a kidney.

And he was telling me not to set her off.

The doctor reminded them again.

"Family can't make this decision in the patient's place."

Clara rushed to smile.

"Doctor, we know."

"She's just being stubborn out loud. We'll talk her around at home."

I dropped my eyes, my phone screen turned facedown.

The little red dot of the recording glowed quietly.

The year Dad brought Clara and Elisa into the Swanson house, I was seven.

That was the day I learned Elisa wasn't a stepsister.

Like me, she was Dad's daughter.

Only her mother was Clara.

Dad stroked my head.

"Chrissy, from now on you're all one family."

"You're the big sister. Ellie's not strong, so you look out for her."

I called Clara Mom for over ten years.

And I gave way to Elisa for over ten years.

Gave up my room, my birthdays, Dad's arms.

Now they wanted me to give up my body too.

Walking out of the exam room, Dad was already posting in the family group chat.

"Chrissy matched on the first screen. Ellie's saved."

A row of praise scrolled up underneath in no time.

"Chrissy's so sensible."

"A big sister should act like a big sister."

"Athletes are healthy. One less kidney's no big deal."

Not one of them asked whether I was willing.

I reached for my ID.

Joseph put it in his pocket.

"When you've calmed down."

Before races, he used to tuck away my bib and my kinesio tape the same way.

I thought that was thoughtfulness.

Only now do I understand.

The same hand could just as easily be used to keep me in check.
