Chapter 1 of Erased Fifty-Two Times - The Founder They Demoted to the Front Desk

The CEO calls my name across eight hundred people and tells them I am fired.

He says I stole the majority shareholder's last name.

The whole floor laughs.

Two hundred thousand strangers laugh harder in the livestream chat scrolling past my face.

My sister stands at his shoulder, and on her wrist is the watch my father strapped onto mine the morning I turned eighteen.

For three years I watched them peel my name off my own patents, my own code, my own designs.

Co-founder, they wrote first.

Then former front-desk staff.

My mother's last words were that I should not make a scene, because we are family.

So I do not make a scene.

I climb the three steps to the stage in my flat work shoes.

I do not reach for his microphone.

I lift my phone toward the wall-sized screen behind him, and I press the one button I have guarded for three years.

Fifty-one percent of this company slides back under my name while the camera is still rolling.

Then I look at him, and I tell him whose turn it is now.

***

My plastic name badge dug into my collarbone, the sharp edge scraping my skin. It read: Seraphine Vale, Former Front-Desk Staff.

"You're late," I told Damien as he shoved past the sign-in table, tossing his heavy coat over my chair.

"Traffic," he muttered, already checking his phone. "Fix this wire. The investors are seated in the front row."

I reached for the microphone cord dangling from his lapel. My fingers brushed the expensive wool of his suit jacket. Three years ago, I didn't just iron his shirts. I coded the entire initial UI architecture that built this company from a garage project into a tech giant. Twelve patents. All under my name. I traded them for a fifty-one percent stake. Margaret, the board secretary, had sealed that original contract herself, locking it in the corporate vault.

"Stand still," I instructed, threading the black wire behind his collar.

"Hurry up, Seraphine. I need to be on stage in two minutes."

"You promised me the temporary proxy agreement was just for the Series A funding crisis," I pushed, refusing to let him turn away. "You said it was a six-month hold."

Damien finally met my gaze. His eyes held zero warmth, only impatience. "We needed a clean cap table. The venture capitalists didn't want a college dropout holding the majority shares. You know this. They wanted a steady hand at the wheel."

"A steady hand?" I scoffed, keeping my voice low so the stagehands wouldn't hear. "I built the engine. You just painted the car."

"And now the car is worth two billion dollars," he shot back, leaning closer.

"So you registered me as the receptionist."

"It kept you on payroll." He adjusted his cuffs, pulling away from my hands. "You still get a paycheck. You still have a job."

"A job greeting people at a company I founded."

"Don't start a fight tonight." He pointed a finger at my chest. "This is our third anniversary. The press is out there. Do not ruin this for me."

"I want my shares back, Damien. The crisis is over. The company is stable."

"We will discuss this next quarter," he deflected, turning his back to me. "Make sure the VIP list is updated. If the mayor shows up, escort him directly to table one."

"Next quarter," I repeated. "That's what you said last year."

"I am the CEO, Seraphine. I decide when we reorganize the cap table."

A burst of laughter cut through the backstage chatter. My younger sister, Noelle, glided toward us, a flute of champagne in her hand.

"Damien, darling, they're calling for you," she purred, slipping her free arm through his.

"I'm ready," he said. His voice softened entirely, shedding the harsh edge he just used on me.

As Noelle adjusted her grip on his arm, the backstage spotlights caught the silver watch on her wrist. The worn leather strap contrasted harshly with her expensive sequined gown.

My stomach twisted into a hard knot.

"Nice watch," I said, keeping my voice flat.

Noelle glanced down, feigning surprise. "Oh, this? It goes with the vintage theme of the gala. Don't you think?"

"Dad put that on my wrist the morning I turned eighteen."

"And you were so careless with it," Noelle replied, her smile tightening at the corners. "I told you I'd keep it safe three years ago. You were too busy failing to manage your own life, let alone a luxury timepiece."

"Give it back, Noelle."

"It looks better on me anyway," she taunted, tapping the glass face with her manicured nail. "Besides, it belongs to a winner. Dad always said this watch was meant for the daughter who made him proud."

"He never said that."

"He didn't have to." She took a slow sip of her champagne. "Look around, Seraphine. I'm walking the red carpet tonight. You're handing out lanyards."

"I said, give it back." I took a step out from behind the table.

"Don't cause a scene, Seraphine," Damien warned, stepping between us. He placed a protective hand on Noelle's waist. "She's just wearing it for tonight."

"She's been wearing it for three years, Damien. She took it from my apartment while I was in the hospital."

"And you never came looking for it," Noelle countered smoothly. "Because you knew you didn't deserve it."

Noelle laughed, a sharp, crystalline sound that drew the attention of two stagehands nearby. They paused their work, watching us. She drained the last sip of her champagne and stepped right up to my side of the table.

She thrust the empty glass toward me.

I didn't move. My hands remained at my sides.

"Take it," Noelle ordered.

"Put it on the table."

"I said, take it." She shoved the crystal stem directly into my palm.

My fingers closed around it out of pure reflex before it could shatter on the concrete floor.

Noelle leaned in close, her perfume suffocatingly sweet. "Hold this. That's what the front desk is for, isn't it?"

I stared at her. The urge to throw the glass against the wall burned in my chest, but I held my ground. If I reacted, I gave them exactly what they wanted: a reason to throw me out before the night was over.

"Good girl," Noelle whispered, patting my cheek.

Damien didn't reprimand her. He didn't even look at me. He simply guided Noelle toward the heavy velvet curtain.

"Let's go," he told her. "The board is waiting."

I stood alone behind the sign-in sheet. The cold condensation from the glass seeped into my skin. I rubbed my thumb over the wet crystal, staring at the floorboards.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the emcee's voice boomed through the overhead speakers, vibrating against my ribs. "Welcome to the third anniversary of..."

The backstage lights dropped. Total darkness washed over my corner.

I reached into my blazer pocket. My fingers traced the cracked screen of my old, powered-down phone. The one that held the original, unedited audio files of my meetings with Margaret. The files that proved the temporary proxy agreement was signed under duress. I didn't turn it on. Not yet.

A bright flash illuminated the space to my left.

The backstage monitor flickered to life, mirroring the massive LED display on the main stage. The company logo spun in high definition, accompanied by swelling orchestral music.

I watched the screen, waiting for Damien's face to appear.

Instead, the intro video glitched. The screen flashed to a raw developer slide.

My eyes darted to the bottom right corner of the feed.

There, buried in the dark gradient of the presentation slide, was a tiny string of text.

System Architecture & Design by Seraphine Vale.

They had used my original master file for the presentation deck.

A panicked tech assistant sprinted past my table, his walkie-talkie blaring as he lunged toward the control console to delete my name before the curtain went up.
