Erased Fifty-Two Times - The Founder They Demoted to the Front Desk

"—be anyone in this company," Damien finished, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling.

The silence held for one heartbeat. Then, the front row erupted.

It wasn't applause. It was laughter.

Men in tailored suits and women in evening gowns chuckled, turning in their seats to stare at the illuminated corner where I stood. The massive LED screen behind Damien shifted. A live feed of the corporate stream popped up next to his towering face.

Comments scrolled past at a dizzying speed.

*Who is the girl at the desk?*

*Did she actually forge his name?*

*Security needs to step up. Throw her out.*

Damien soaked in the mocking energy. He rested his hands on the podium, leaning into the microphone. "We built this from nothing," he told the audience, his voice smooth and practiced. "We bled for this technology. We sacrificed sleep, relationships, and our own well-being to bring this vision to life. We do not tolerate opportunists trying to ride the coattails of real innovators."

He swept his arm across the stage, gesturing to the empty space beside him.

That was Noelle's cue.

She glided across the stage. Her sequined dress caught the harsh lights, casting fractured reflections across the front rows. She stopped right beside him.

She linked her arm through his. Then, she raised her left hand, adjusting his lapel.

The camera zoomed in. My father's worn leather watch filled the fifty-foot screen.

"Damien is too kind," Noelle said into the mic, her tone laced with manufactured pity. She turned her head, looking directly into the camera lens. Her gaze pierced through the digital feed, locking onto me. "Sister, don't make a scene."

My jaw tightened.

"We're family," she added, offering the crowd a flawless, sympathetic smile.

A collective murmur of approval rippled through the audience. The chat filled with heart emojis.

Those words.

*Don't make a scene. We're family.*

The sterile smell of the hospice room rushed back to me. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor. My mother's frail, cold fingers gripping my wrist. It was the exact phrase she whispered before her lungs gave out a year ago.

That single sentence had been my prison. It chained me to the sign-in desk. It kept my mouth shut when Damien locked me out of the server room. It forced my hand down when Noelle paraded through the office wearing my clothes, my jewelry, my title. I swallowed the poison for twelve months, waiting for the right moment, honoring a dying wish.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

A short, dry laugh scraped its way up my throat.

The tech assistant standing three feet away flinched. He stared at me like I had lost my mind.

"Are you crazy?" he whispered, backing away. "They're humiliating you on a global feed."

"Let them," I told him.

"You're going to get arrested," he warned, his eyes darting toward the wings where two security guards were already unhooking their radios.

"I'm going to get what's mine," I replied.

I reached into my blazer pocket. My fingers wrapped around the cracked phone. I pressed the power button.

The shattered glass illuminated my palm.

I opened the secure file app. A loading bar appeared on the screen, a bright green line inching across the black background.

Ninety-seven percent.

I looked up. On stage, Damien was shaking hands with a board member. Noelle waved to the VIP tables.

"Security," Damien commanded, his voice dropping the polite facade. He pointed at my corner again. "Remove the disruption. Now."

I let go of Noelle's empty champagne glass.

It slipped from my fingers and hit the concrete. The crystal shattered, sending sharp fragments scattering across the floorboards.

The sudden noise made the tech assistant jump.

I stepped out from behind the sign-in table.

"Hey, you need to leave through the back exit," the assistant hissed, grabbing for my sleeve.

I ripped my arm away. "Watch me."

I walked into the center aisle. The blinding spotlight swung frantically, trying to pin me down, but I kept moving forward. The sea of eight hundred employees parted. Faces blurred past me. Some of the junior developers I had trained looked down at their shoes. The marketing executives whispered behind their hands. Flashbulbs went off, blinding me for fractions of a second, but I kept my eyes locked on the three wooden stairs leading up to the stage.

"Seraphine!" Damien's voice blasted through the speakers. He gripped the edges of the podium, his knuckles turning white. "Do not take another step."

"Or what?" I shouted back. The acoustics of the massive hall carried my voice all the way to the front row. "You'll fire me from the front desk?"

Laughter rippled through the back rows, nervous and uncertain this time.

"You are embarrassing yourself," Damien warned. He covered the microphone, but the sensitive equipment picked up his hiss to the wings. "Where the hell is security?"

"Sister, please," Noelle pleaded into her lapel mic. She clutched Damien's arm, her eyes wide for the cameras. "You need help. We can get you a doctor. Just don't ruin this night."

"Take off the watch, Noelle," I demanded, closing the distance to the VIP tables.

"You gave it to me!" she cried, stepping back as if I had struck her.

"You stole it while I was in a hospital bed."

"Liar!" Noelle's voice cracked perfectly. She looked at the front row investors. "She's unstable. She's been like this since mom died."

A man in a sharp gray suit stood up from table one. It was Marcus, the lead venture capitalist. He frowned at Damien. "What is going on here, Frost? We came to celebrate a milestone, not watch a family dispute."

"It's being handled, Marcus," Damien assured him, flashing a tight, panicked smile. He pointed a finger at me. "She is a disgruntled former employee. Nothing more. She failed to adapt to our corporate culture and harbors delusions of grandeur."

"She's wearing a staff badge," Marcus pointed out, his sharp eyes narrowing. "Why is a disgruntled former employee working your front desk?"

Damien's jaw locked. He didn't have a canned PR response for that.

"Because he needed to keep me quiet," I answered for him, stopping ten feet from the stage.

My phone vibrated in my palm. The green line hit ninety-eight percent.

"You signed away your rights three years ago," Damien sneered, leaning over the podium. "You couldn't handle the pressure. You walked away. You abandoned the project when the coding got too complex."

"I built the entire backend architecture while you were busy picking out office furniture," I shot back.

"I hold the patents!" Damien shouted. He slammed his hand on the wood. "I own the shares!"

"I signed a temporary proxy," I corrected, my voice echoing in the dead silence of the hall. "A six-month hold."

"There is no proxy!"

"You own a lie."

I looked down at my cracked screen.

Right above the loading bar sat the high-resolution scan. Margaret's messy signature anchored the bottom left corner. My precise handwriting sat on the right. Fifty-one percent controlling stake. Irrevocable.

Ninety-nine percent.

*Transfer Initiating.*

I placed my foot on the first wooden step.

"Get her off my stage!" Damien roared.

Heavy footsteps pounded the carpet behind me.

"Ma'am, step back," a gruff voice ordered from my left.

I didn't turn around. I took the second step.

"I am taking back my company," I said, staring directly into Damien's eyes.

"You own nothing!" he spat back, his face turning an ugly shade of red. "You're a receptionist!"

"We'll see about that."

I raised my right thumb, hovering it over the cracked sensor of my phone. The screen flashed: *Awaiting Biometric Confirmation.*

"Grab her!" Noelle shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at me.

The heavy thud of combat boots hit the stairs behind me. A massive shadow fell over my screen. I pressed my thumb down toward the glowing glass. The security guard lunged forward, his thick, calloused hand reaching out to grab my shoulder.
